Obituary - Nancy Elizabeth Dillon
Nancy Elizabeth Dillon, 81, Freeman, Missouri, died Tuesday, December 3,
2013 at Vitas Hospice in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will
be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the First Baptist
Church in Freeman with burial in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman. Visitation
will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, December 6 at the Atkinson Funeral
Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to
the church memorial fund. (A complete obituary will be posted when
available).
LOCAL NEWS-BUTLER CITY COUNCIL FOR DEC 3, 2013

In
Butler City Council news, City Administrator Mark Arbuthnot has
“dropped the other shoe,” as he has presented a letter to Mayor Don
Malan and the Council that his last day on the job will be this December
6th. In the letter, Mark said, “I appreciate having been given the
opportunity to work for the City and to serve its citizens over the past
five years and seven months. He continued, “I have enjoyed working with
the Mayor, City Council, board members and its employees. Together we
have helped to make butler a better place for all of us to work and
live.” Mark closed the letter with the comment, “Butler is a great
community that has a bright future.”

Mayor
Don Malan had all good things to say about Mark. Of course he’s sorry
to see Mark retiring and he’ll not only be missed; he’ll be hard to
replace. Mayor Malan said, “It’s been my pleasure to work with him…he’s
been a great colleague and associate during these almost six years he’s
been with us. The City Council and I wish him the very best.”
In connection with that, Art Davis, the consultant who has been hired by the City to assist with the recruitment of a new City Administrator, was at the meeting to review the community profile as well as the selection process and schedule.
Meanwhile, the Council appointed the City Clerk Casey Koehn and Fire Chief Jim Henry as co-administrators until a new City Administrator is appointed. Casey will be doing the office work, and Jim Henry handling outside work.
Consultant Art Davis will be working with the Council in finding a replacement for Mark.
In
other Council activity, they extended Spud Welston’s contract for
another five years, for Bates County Disposal to handle Butler’s trash
pickup.
The Council also approved the Chamber of Commerce’s request to combine Huckster’s Day with the fall Barbeque, to be held on the Butler square September 5th and 6th of next year.

BUTLER CHRISTMAS PARADE LINE UP

The Butler Christmas Parade is soon approaching and here is the tentative agenda for Saturday, December 7th.
Line up for the parade will be at 5pm in the south parking lot of the Butler High School. The judging will be done in designated sections of the south parking lot beginning at 5:30pm. Even if you don’t make it to the judging, you are still free to participate in the parade.
The
winners of the Little Miss Snowflake and Little Jack Frost will be
announced at 5pm at the Bandstand on the Butler Square. The Community
Choir Caroling will be at 5:15 and everyone is welcome to participate in
the Choir. The Community Church Service will begin at 5:45pm.
The
parade will leave the school at 6pm and make its way to the Butler
Square. Everyone is asked to line up on the east side of Fulton facing
north to head to the square.
Santa
will be turning on the Christmas lights for the season and everyone is
invited to come and enjoy the kick off for the Christmas Season at the
Butler Christmas Parade December 7th.

UPDATE - Road Closure In Butler
The Butler Water Department is now saying they are only going to have the south lane of High Street closed for repairs.The repairs should be finished by the time school is out today. Still use caution when traveling in the area. If any more information becomes available Bates County Live will update you.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER AT OHIO STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
The Ohio Street United Methodist Church will be serving their annual Community Christmas Dinner on Saturday, December 21st from 3 – 6pm in the church basement. They will be serving ham this year. You can either dine in or get your dinner and take it home to eat and this is the Church’s gift to you this Holiday Season.
One Vehicle Accident On I-49 This Morning
Around 10:45am this morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Bates County Sheriff's Department responded to a 1 vehicle accident in the Southbound lanes of I-49 around Mile Marker 143.4 North of Adrian. The accident occurred when the 2004 Toyota Prius driven by 72 year old Joseph M. Day of Easton Kansas was traveling Southbound on I-49 and fell asleep behind the wheel and traveled off the right side of the roadway striking a embankment. Mr. Day received minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Dons Tow of Butler and received minor damages.
