Special meeting called this Thursday

Edith Dilley, Vice-Chairman of the Bates County Democratic Central Committee has called a special committee meeting for Thursday evening, July 24, 2014 at 7 PM to be held in the Circuit Court Room, 3rd Floor at the Courthouse. The elevator can be accessed from the north entrance.

The purpose of this meeting is for anyone interested in being appointed by the Governor to the position of Southern Commissioner to make a presentation to the committee. The Bates County Democratic Central Committee will submit their recommendation to Governor Jay Nixon.

Anyone who is interested in being considered for this appointment should send their resume to the Governor whether they meet with the Democratic Central Committee or not.

This meeting is non-binding. Sometimes governors follow the recommendation of the central committee and sometimes they do not.

We are saddened by the untimely death of Larry Berry, our Southern Commissioner, and this is a most difficult task.

Vernon County Sheriffs Office Press Release: Pursuit #21, vehicle spiked, driver arrested‏

Tyler Millman
A Bronaugh resident is behind bars after he allegedly tried outrunning Sheriff’s Deputies in a mini-van late Friday night. According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Tyler Millman, 22 of Bronaugh was arrested when his vehicle was stopped on N highway just west of 1425 road. The chase has been confirmed as pursuit #21 of the year and started on I-49 when a Sheriff’s Deputy noticed the vehicle driving very erratically and at a high rate of speed. “The deputy tried to stop the car because it almost hit another vehicle on I-49” said Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher. When the Vehicle failed to stop, the deputy called out the pursuit and was soon joined by other deputies.

According to the press release, the vehicle continued to head south on I-49 and then turned off at the Sheldon exit and headed west on N highway. The pursuit quickly came to an end when a Trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisting the Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips at 1425 road deflating two of the vans tires. Millman was taken into custody when the vehicle came to a stop and was transported to the Vernon County Jail. Sheriff’s Deputies also found what they believe to be methamphetamines in the van as well. “Pursuits are dangerous and we don’t want to have to do them, but people need to learn if you run from law enforcement, there will be consequences and you will go to jail” said Mosher. Millman is currently being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.

Gun Rights Amendment cleared for August ballot in Missouri

The constitutional amendment will be on the August 5 ballot.
The state supreme court says it is too late for it to remove the proposed gun rights amendment from the August ballot, or to change the amendment title.  The issue will be Amendment 5, to be voted on August 5.

The court says state laws does not allow individuals or issues to be placed on a ballot less than six weeks before an election, and courts have interpreted that law to also prohibit courts from modifying issues already on the ballot.

Opponents of the amendment had claimed the ballot title was unfair and insufficient.

Supporters of the proposal say it strengthens Second Amendment rights for Missourians and limits federal regulation of firearms in Missouri. Opponents say passage of it would limit the legislature’s own ability to regulate concealed weapons and could lead to elimination of requirements that people need state licenses to carry concealed weapons.

The proposed amendment reads, “Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to include a declaration that the right to keep and bear arms is an unalienable right and that the state government is obligated to uphold that right.”
