Updated Obituary - Samuel T. Stump

Samuel T. Stump, 92, of Blue Mound, Kansas died at 9:40 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Allen County Hospital, Iola. Sam was born November 15, 1924 in Blue Mound, Kansas to David and Nellie May (Day) Stump. After graduating from Blue Mound High School, he attended what is now Pittsburg State University until his enlistment in the US Navy. He enlisted in the US Navy on August 19, 1943 and proudly served his country as a Pharmacist''s Mate Third Class during World War II. 

He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1946. Upon his completion of service to his country, he attended Baker University to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He was a member of the Blue Mound American Legion and the Blue Mound United Methodist Church where he served on many church boards. He was a very accomplished trombonist and pianist. He played piano for not only his home church but for many churches in the area. Sam was a farmer and a rural letter carrier. 

On August 21, 1949 he married Francelene "Alberta" Torkelson at the Methodist Church in Baldwin City, Kansas. They were blessed with two daughters, Vicki and Debbie. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alberta on November 26, 2006; and one grandson, Steven Hedges. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Jerry Smith of Tulsa, OK and Debbie and Rob Hedges of Springfield, MO; one sister, Mary Barbara Foster; three grandchildren, Melissa Hedges, Angela Hedges, and Tommy Hedges and his wife Lauren; and one great-grandchild on the way.

The funeral service for Samuel will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Blue Mound United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery. The visitation will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. 

The family suggests contributions to Blue Mound United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, Kansas 66056.

Funeral services for Vernon Dowty will be 10 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with Evangelist Bill McLaughlin officiating. 

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 3-5 p.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. 

Burial, 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 9 in Ft. Scott National Cemetery, Ft. Scott, Kansas. Contributions to Heartland Hospice.

Vernon Charles Dowty, age 77 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Medicalodge Nursing Center in Butler. He was born November 15, 1939 to Claud and Jewel Irene Chambers Dowty in Miami, Oklahoma.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Donna Dowty of Butler, Missouri; two sons, Will Dowty and wife Beth of Belton, Missouri and Scott Dowty and wife Julie of Mankato, Minnesota; one daughter, Renae Lizarraga and husband Santiago of Orrville, Ohio; one sister, Alma Ruth Hilburn of El Dorado, Arkansas; eight grandchildren and one grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Oakley.

Helen Maxine Hill, age 94 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born March 8, 1922 to William Frederick and Ethel Lessie Haynes Engelhardt in Butler.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Hill and husband Tom of Odessa, Missouri; one brother, Bill Engelhardt and wife Celia of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; three sisters-in-law, Anna Lou Englehardt of Adrian, Missouri, Violet Hill of Blackfoot, Idaho and Dorothy Zellmer Vetter of Boise, Idaho; a brother-in-law, Don Ferguson of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren, Alison Hill and Ashlee Smith and husband Scott; one great-grandson, Kellen Smith; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Herbert in 1985; one son, Herbert Brent Hill in 1960; one brother, Kenneth Engelhardt; and one sister, Mildred Ferguson.

Update: Outbuilding Fire In Rich Hill

Rich Hill - The Rich Hill Fire Department responded Friday afternoon 01/06/2017 at 1441 hours to a reported fire at Gilkey's Tow which is located at 9519B SW CR 517 in Rich Hill.

When crews arrived on scene a large shop building was found with heavy smoke and fire showing. Firefighters from Butler Fire Department also responded.

The building was occupied by a business at time of the fire. The fire was extinguished without incident. No injuries to report.

The fire was taken under control but not before heavy fire and smoke damage occurred. T
he fire was under control at 1600 hours. 

Local authorities conducted the investigation on cause and origin of fire, which is still under investigation at this time.

MDC encourages website users to update their browser versions before Jan. 17th

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants users of its permit-purchasing website (mdc-web.s3licensing.com/ or mdc.mo.gov/buypermits) and free mobile apps – MO Hunting and MO Fishing – to know that it will be upgrading the website and mobile apps in mid-January for increased security.

“Following a recent update to the Internet and Payment Card Industry compliance standards, anyone accessing our permit-sales site will be required to use an internet browser that supports these changes,” said MDC Permit Services Supervisor Nathan Bess. “PCI compliance governs the information that is transferred during an online transaction. These changes are necessary to protect our customers’ information. Users will be impacted if they are not operating with the latest versions of some browsers.”

MDC encourages website users to update their browser versions. The following browser versions will no longer be supported by the permit website beginning Jan. 17: Internet Explorer Version 10 or less, Google Chrome Version 29 or less, Mozilla Firefox Version 27 or less, and Safari Version 6 or less.

Android users of the Department’s MO Hunting and MO Fishing apps will need to have at least version 5.0 to continue using the apps. Users with Apple phones and other Apple mobile devices will not be affected.
