Baby Aurora Lewis, One month old the daughter of Derrick and Carla Lewis of Butler was born with Ventricle Septic Heart Defect.

This Saturday September 9th starting at 8am will be Aurora day on the corner!

McGennis Youth Center Barbecue and Auction Set for Sunday, September 24th

The annual McGennis Youth Center Barbecue and Auction are set for Sunday, September 24.

In conjunction with the barbecue and auction, September 24 will also be the second annual car-truck-bike show.Registration for the car show will be 11 a.m. to noon with the awards presentation at 2 p.m. The top ten entries will be awarded trophies, and dash plaques will go to the first 20 entries.

Children’s games will start about 12:30 p.m. with all the classic country picnic contests. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be provided through the afternoon by Jeff and Jana Droz. Free face painting will be available for children through the afternoon.

Attention will turn to the serving line at 1 p.m. The meal will again be catered by Food Fair of Rich Hill. There will be barbecued beef, pork and chicken with baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, bread and iced tea and lemonade. Everyone who wishes to lend a hand to the Center is invited to bring along a cake for the dessert table. Any extra cakes will be auctioned off.

Two area singers, Erica Diehl and Anna Spencer, will be providing musical entertainment during the dinner hour.

About 1:45 p.m. a unique variety of crafts and collectible items will go on the auction block, headed up this year by Auctioneer Larry Hacker. The craft auction has become known for its quality items ranging from antiques to delicious baked goods.

A popular part of the auction will again be featured this year. The Mad Hatter features ten McGennis Youth Center caps donated by Bell Photography. These caps, each numbered, will be auctioned off. At the end of the auction one of these numbers will be drawn. That winning number will win a Henry Pump Action 22 LR Octagon Barrel Model H003T, donated by Bell Farms.

In the same vein, Schlyer Designs has donated a beautiful .45-kt. diamond necklace set in white gold with a white gold chain. Ten velvet bags will be auctioned off, and the winning number drawn will win the diamond necklace. The velvet bags will each contain a gift certificate to Schlyer Designs ranging in value from $5 to $50.

For more information about the auction or to donate an item call Marc or Alison Bell at 660-832-4196. The generosity of those who donate and those who bid has made the auction a major revenue source for the Youth Center.

Admission to the barbecue is $10.00 for adults and $4.00 for children (ages 6-12). Tickets are for the meal and are not required for the auction.

Obituary - Bob E. Keene Sr.

Funeral services for Bob E. Keene Sr. will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri.

Bob E. Keene Sr., age 79 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at his home. He was born February 10, 1938 to Monte Olen and Grace Rebecca Scott Keene in Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Keene of Butler; a son, Bobby E. Keene Jr. of Butler; two daughters, Susan Miller and husband Chat of Harrisonville, Missouri and Becki Smith and significant other Alva Thornhill; a sister, Joyce Boydston and husband Tom of Oilton, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Monte James Keene; a nephew, Eddie Darrell Keene; and his mother-in-law, Georgia, Lucille Yardley.






Obituary - Norma "Darlene" Austin

Norma "Darlene" Austin, 78 years, passed away Monday, September 4, 2017 at her home in Chilhowee, Missouri. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Shawnee Mound Presbyterian Church. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Missouri.

Darlene was born September 27, 1938 in Henry County, Missouri the daughter of Howard and Ethel (Foster) Martin. She enjoyed deer and arrowhead hunting, gardening, and doing arts and crafts. She was an animal lover, especially her collie dog, Max. Darlene was an excellent cook. She was a member of Shawnee Mound Presbyterian Church.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Martin.

Survivors include her husband, Ted of the home; one son Steven Austin of Chilhowee, Missouri; and two grandchildren, Alex and Sarah Austin.

City of Nevada Police Department

The City of Nevada Police Department is currently accepting applications for the full time position of Police Officer. The starting wage for this position is $31,886 per year with an increase to $33,321 upon successful completion of the probationary period.

This position includes full benefits such as retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance, as well as paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. The Nevada Police Department also has a take-home vehicle program for officers.

Obituary - Blaine Butterfield

Blaine Butterfield, 88, Nevada, MO passed away on Tuesday, September 05, 2017 at Nevada Nursing and Rehab in Nevada. Blaine was born April 12, 1929 in Bronaugh, MO to Walter Henry and Effie Mae (Stark) Butterfield.

Blaine was raised in Bronaugh and graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War in a Medical Detachment Unit and then in Occupation Forces in Japan. Blaine received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Camp Stars, the Occupation Medal (Japan), and the UN Service Medal. 

Following his service years he attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS and received a degree in Psychology. He worked as a social worker for the State of Kansas most of his life until his retirement. For the past 20 years Blaine has resided in Nevada. He currently attended Nevada United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Eva Butterfield and her husband Lee Dunsworth, Raymore, MO, JoEtta Bellinger and her husband David, Oskaloosa, KS, Jane Butterfield, Lawrence, KS, Mavis Spaar and her husband Doug, Topeka, KS, Martha Iott, and her husband Cary, South Carolina; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister.

A graveside committal service with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the National Cemetery in Fort Scott, KS wih Rev. Sharon Freeman officiating. A procession will leave from Ferry Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. to travel to the cemetery.
