Miami County Kansas Sheriff's Office Wanted Wednesday

From the Bates County Sheriff's Office

We have had several sex offenders state that they were told they are no longer required to pay the $5.00 fee when they register. This is not correct. That part of the law did not change.

The statutes states that the Chief Law Enforcement officer can charge $5.00 to the offender for changing their registration.

When a sex offender registers in the month they are required to, that is considered a change to their registration per MSHP.

All sex offenders are required to pay the $5.00 fee when they register in Bates County.

A bit of wintry weather Thursday

It’s going to feel like we went from Fall to Winter over the next couple of days. Today the sun will shine a bit, but temperatures will remain on the cool side across Kansas and Missouri as north winds prevail. Thursday will see precipitation develop across the region, possibly as early as the morning hours, though more likely during Thursday afternoon.

Temperature profiles indicate that precipitation during the daylight hours will likely be rain, with a bit of snow mixed in; but Thursday evening temperatures will drop, and what rain is out there will change over to snow.

Currently, only light accumulations, ranging from a trace to around 1 inch, of snow are expected during the late afternoon and overnight hours of Thursday into Friday morning. Otherwise, expect temperatures to remain well below normal through the weekend.

Medical Marijuana Issues Passes in Missouri

A ballot measure allowing the use of medical marijuana with an emphasis on helping veterans has passed, but two other medical marijuana measures were turned down.

Missouri voters on Tuesday approved Amendment 2, a ballot measure backed by a coalition of patients, doctors and veterans called New Approach Missouri. It was one of three unrelated medical marijuana measures on the ballot.

Under Amendment 2, post-traumatic stress disorder is among the conditions that qualify for use of medical marijuana, along with cancer and other serious illnesses. A 4 percent sales tax will go to a newly-created fund for health and care services for veterans. The sales tax revenue also will be used to administer licensing of medical marijuana businesses.

Voters turned down Amendment 3, which would have included a 15 percent tax to create a new state institute to research "presently incurable diseases." The effort was largely self-funded by Springfield doctor and attorney Brad Bradshaw.

Also defeated was Proposition C, which would have imposed a 2 percent tax on the sale of medical marijuana.
