Obituary - Ova Opal Coke

Ova Opal Coke, age 95, passed away February 4, 2020 at Clinton Health Care and Rehab in Clinton, MO. Visitation will be held 10AM, Friday February 7, 2020 at Vansant-Mills Chapel. Graveside services will follow 11AM at Vansant Road Cemetery, Clinton, MO. The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Compassus and may be left in care of the funeral home. Ova Opal Coke was born September 8, 1924 in Japton, Arkansas to Dink and Mary (Corbitt) Dorsy. Ova lived in Arkansas for many years. She enjoyed quilting and reading books.

Ova is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Earl Ross, and Daughter Mary Hotaling.

Ova is survived by a son Roy Ross, a daughter Pat Bramell, and 6 grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Nickel, 100, of Harrisonville, MO, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Golden Years Care Center. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020 with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery in Raytown.

Rich Hill schools closing early today

Rich Hill R-IV Schools will dismiss at 12:15 today, February 5. If you do NOT want your child to ride the bus or drive themselves home, please call the elementary or high school office and we will provide supervision at school for your child until you come get them. All after-school activities are canceled today.

Heavy Snow Threatens Mid-Week Travel

JEFFERSON CITY – A winter weather system will enter the state today bringing a wintry mix before transitioning to all snow on Wednesday. The first wave of wintry precipitation, consisting of rain, freezing drizzle and light snow is expected to enter the state on Tuesday, resulting in a dusting of snow and light glaze of ice.

A second wave is forecast to begin overnight and continue all day Wednesday. Snow accumulation could reach 6 inches in parts of the state. Travel Wednesday will likely be hazardous, affecting both the morning and evening commutes. Motorists should exercise extreme caution, particularly along the I-70 and I-44 corridors, and consider working from home, if possible. Slow down, use caution and don’t drive distracted. If you are involved in a crash or slide-off, the safest thing to do is to stay inside your vehicle with your seat belt on.

A parade celebrating the KC Chiefs’ victory in Sunday’s Super Bowl is still scheduled to be held Wednesday in downtown Kansas City. With hundreds of thousands predicted to attend, Kansas City law enforcement officials are urging parade-goers to “pack your patience.” Expect very heavy congestion, major traffic delays and huge crowds. The potential for falling snow and accumulations of up to 6 inches along the parade route will make the traffic conditions even more challenging.

License bureau closing early today

The Butler license office will be closing at 11 am today due to weather concerns.Plans are to be open tomorrow as usual. 

Likewise, the Bates County Extension office in the courthouse will be closing at noon today.

Obituary - Katherine Marie Berkebile

Katherine Marie Berkebile, 97, of Adrian, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020, at her home in Adrian.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. Visitation will be Friday evening, February 7, 2020, from 5-6 p.m. at the Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler. Contributions are suggested to Wounded Warriors.

Katherine is survived by her son, Jess Berkebile and wife Colene of Grand Saline, TX; a daughter, Patsy Lee Reinhart and husband David of Simpson, LA; one brother, Roy Wagner of Butler, MO; and one sister, Ruth Harp of Oak Grove, MO; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Appleton City plans for upcoming alumni celebration

The ACHS Junior Class will serve biscuits & gravy and pancakes 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8 at the Park Building. Proceeds will be used to help fund the ACHS Prom All Nighter activities.

The monthly Men’s Fellowship Breakfast at the Appleton City Church of God (Holiness) will be 7:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8. All the men of the community are invited to join them for a time of great food and fellowship. Ron Dunlap will have a short devotional.

The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, February 9 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up. A free will donation will be greatly appreciated

Montrose VFW Post 8820 will host a Coyote Tournament February 8-9, 2020. Registration is February 7 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Montrose VFW. There will be $100 entry fee per team (3 man team is max). There will also be a $5 side pot for the mangiest dog. Coyotes may be taken by all legal methods as determined by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Check in is Sunday, February 9 at 3:00 p.m. (If you are late you will not be counted). There will be cash payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd laces and the biggest dog. All participants will be entered to win a Mossberg 590 shotgun (all state laws apply).
