Obituary - Cynthia Layne Files

Cynthia Layne Files, age 64, Mound City, Kansas passed away on Friday February 14, 2020. She was born on July 6, 1955 in Victorville, California the daughter of Keith and Velva Halbach Fry. She graduated from Silver Creek High in San Jose, California and attended Riverside Community College for three semesters. She was employed with Kansas City Power and Light for over thirty years. She earned numerous safety awards during her employment. 

She was a member of the Mound City Christian Church, involved in the Pioneer Harvest Festival, volunteered in many capacities and help raise funds for several charities, worked in Al Anon and was a competitive pistol shooter. Cindy and Carl Files were married September 22, 2011. Cindy was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Pat Faulkner. She is survived by her husband, Carl, two daughters, Melinda Satcher and husband Shawn, Rachel Johnson and husband Jeffery, four brothers, Mike Fry, Wayne Allen, Randy Beard and Wesley Beard, two sisters, Brenda Watkins and Bridgett Newman, and three grandchildren, Jeremy, Casey and Madison.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Mound City First Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Monday, February 17 at the Church. Obituary - David Earl Cummings

David Earl Cummings, age 66, Mound City, Kansas passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020. He was born on September 8, 1953 in Lamar, Missouri the son of Lester W. and Dolores Hamilton Cummings. Dave graduated from the Kansas City Kansas School for the Blind. He had impaired vision resulting from a tractor accident early in his life. 

However, he never let the vision problems stop him from working. He had a tremendous work ethic and would do whatever he needed to raise his family. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was currently working for the City of Mound City and running his own trash service. Dave enjoyed working with horses and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard Cummings. 

Dave is survived by his son Daniel Cummings and wife Tonya, a daughter, Jennifer Cummings, two sisters, Janet White and Judy Wilson, five grandsons, Kade, Koye, Colt, Ridge and Ty Cummings, and two great grandsons, Bentley and August Cummings.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Monday, February 17, 2020 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Contributions are suggested to the charity of your choice. Obituary - John Robert Starks

John Robert Starks, 26, of Greenwood, departed this life, Sunday, February 9, 2020, at his home.

Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2020, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Old tradition; new place


Courtwarming was held in the newly completed gymnasium Friday night at Miami R-1 with a near capacity crowd in attendance. 2020 King and Queen Brody Julien and Harley Loper took the honors. There will be an open house ceremony for the new gym this Friday evening at 6:00  pm.



Butler man injured after striking parked car

On 2/15/20 around 11:09pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies and Archie Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on the northbound I-49 ramp and Route B.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2009 Ford driven by 43 year old John T. Carullo traveled off the roadway and stuck and unoccupied vehicle.

Mr. Carullo sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville for treatment.

Both vehicle were totaled and towed from the scene of the crash by Miller's Tow and J's Southland Tow,

Injured Bald Eagle in Barton County

On 2-15-2020 The Barton County Sheriff's Office was notified about an injured Eagle in the area of SE 20th Rd and 50th Ln. Deputies were able to catch the eagle and contact the Barton County Conservation Agent Scott Brown. 

Agent Brown is going to take the eagle to a veterinarian to be medically treated. We are hoping that the eagle will recover and live a long healthy life. 

No matter the outcome I want to thank those who stepped up to help. Thank you to Deputy Sheriff Zakk Yokley, and Corrections Officers Kyle Riggs and Zach Kirch for there efforts in catching the eagle.

Way to go ladies

Congratulations to Butler Bears Shyla Register, Baylee Hudson, and Ainsley Vandenburg for advancing to finals at the Speech Tournament in Adrian! 

Shyla placed 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking and 2nd in Radio; Baylee placed 3rd in Poetry and 3rd in DI; 

Ainsley placed 3rd in Storytelling; and Ainsley and Baylee placed 6th in Duet Improv!

Way to go Cole Ritter

Adrian Blackhawk Junior Cole Ritter takes 1st place in District wrestling today and will be state bound.

This is Cole's third time taking first place at districts! Way to go!
