Adrian R-3 School District COVID-19 Update

Dear Adrian Parents/Guardians

We are reaching out to you today to inform you that an individual at the Adrian School District has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual was last present in the school on Friday, September 11, 2020. The District has worked with the Bates County Health Department to identify close contacts of the confirmed case. If a student or staff member has been determined to have been in close contact with this individual, you have already been contacted with further instructions. If you have not been contacted, there is nothing further you need to do at this time. Close contact is defined as fewer than 6 feet away for more than 15 minutes, regardless of face covering use per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The District is taking all precautions, consistent with the CDC and Bates County Health Department. Due to privacy requirements, we cannot release the name of the individual or details that may identify them.

Appropriate cleaning and disinfecting measures are being taken, so there is no need to close our building for additional cleaning.

COVID-19 is thought to be spread via person-to-person contact through contaminated air droplets from coughing and sneezing by an infected person. As with controlling the spread of other viruses, we urge everyone to take the following preventive measures:
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands or in the air. Always try to cough or sneeze into a tissue, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into your arm.
  • As much as you can, avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.
  • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, counter tops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
  • Maintain at least 6 feet of distance between non-household members and wear a mask in places where maintaining that distance is difficult.
Be alert for symptoms including…
Fever of 100.4° or higher
Any new cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
New congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea

Close contact with a person with COVID-19 in the last 14 days
We are continuing to monitor this situation and will provide additional information as needed. If you have any questions regarding COVID, you can contact the Bates County Health Department at 66-679-6108.

Sincerely,
Don Lile Superintendent Adrian R-III School District

Sinkhole: The report is in

The following information is an excerpt from the report Bates County Commissioners received from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources/Missouri Geological Survey Environmental Assistance Unit regarding the sinkhole just south of Rich Hill

“On August 24, 2020, a road collapse in Bates county was reported to the Missouri Geological Survey. The collapse is located just south of Rich Hill on SW County road 10008. A geologist with the Geological Survey Program (GSP) observed the site of the collapse on August 25th. At the time of that site visit, the collapse was approximately 22 feet long, 17 feet wide, and approximately 8 feet in depth. Based on site observations and collaboration with Land Reclamation Program Staff, the geologist concluded that the collapse was likely related to historic coal mining activities in the region.

In order to better assess the risk associated with this feature and the most appropriate remediation strategy, GSP staff performed electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) analyses at the site on September 3rd and 4th. ERT measures the relative resistance of earth materials to a generated electrical current. This technique allows staff to model the composition of the subsurface without invasive work such as excavating.

Interpretation of the ERT data did not reveal areas likely to be void space at depth. Although it cannot be stated for certain, it is the professional opinion of GSP staff that factors other than open underground space are the cause of observed geophysical anomalies. Based on this data, we do not recommend significant additional excavation before repairing the collapse.”

A message from Appleton City School DistrictWe wanted to give you an update on our current Covid situation as well as an update to our policies regarding safety procedures. We currently have one positive case in our district. All affected parties have been contacted and given instructions for self-isolation. Custodial staff will be doing targeted cleaning and disinfecting to prevent further spread. Saturday, the school board voted to require masks for all students in grade 6-12. Beginning Tuesday, students will be required to wear a mask anytime they are in any district building. In certain situations where social distancing is possible, or when appropriate Covid divider screens are in place, masks may be removed at the teachers direction. Masks must display images and wording appropriate for school, the same as any other article of clothing worn to school.  At the recommendation of the county health department, neck gaiters and plastic face shields will not be deemed appropriate coverings.  The mask requirement may be waived for any student who provides a note from a physician stating that there is a medical reason that they cannot wear a mask. The school has a large supply of masks available to students if they need one. These masks will be in both offices as well as the nurse's office. Please help us by supporting, encouraging and educating your student on the proper use of masks. While none of us enjoy wearing masks, by doing so, we will hopefully avoid future mass quarantines for students and teachers. Our goal is to keep kids in school! As always, if you have questions, please call any of the building offices. Thank you for your continued support of our students, our school and our mission to provide a high quality education to all of our students in a safe and caring environment. Thank you.
