Fatality motorcycle accident in Linn County Kansas

On 2/3/21 around 5:30pm the Kansas State Highway Patrol along with Linn County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident on E 2200 Road .4 miles west of Young Road or 3 miles east of U69 Highway on 2200 Road in rural Linn County.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by 52 year old Richard J. Coffey of Fulton, Kansas was westbound when the bike crossed over the centerline of traffic and struck the 2007 Chevrolet Truck driven by 37 year old Matthew S. Vanpelt of Raymore, Missouri head on.

Mr. Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene of this accident and he was transported to Schneider Funeral Home. Mr. Vanpelt wasn't injured in this accident.

Henry County Health Center confirms 6 new cases of COVID-19

The Henry County Health Center (HCHC) has received confirmation of 6 more positive cases of COVID-19. Clinton-2, Windsor-2, Blairstown-1, and Creighton-1. This brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Henry County to 1862.

All contact tracing has commenced and all parties that have had close contact are being notified. HCHC continues to encourage residents to practice social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, and to remain home if you are sick.

The CDC continues to recommend that individuals to wear a face covering when you are in public, and are unable to social distance, to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.


Obituary - Mary Jane (Pittsenbarger) Pemberton

Mary Jane Pemberton , age 80, La Cygne, Kansas passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021. She was born on October 16, 1940 in Albany, Missouri the daughter of Henry James and Layla Viola Hazelbaker Pittsenbarger. She worked on the assembly line for General Motors before retiring. She was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. She was united in marriage to Ed Pemberton on October 2, 1976. 


He preceded her in death on March 12, 2016. Mary Jane volunteered at the La Cygne Library and Swanfest. She enjoyed playing Bunko, growing flowers, and was a member of the Over 50 Club. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jim Pittensbarger and a grandson, Matthew Richard Benjamin. Mary Jane is survived by two sons, Richard and Robert Stitt, two daughters, Wendy Stitt and Brenda Benjamin, a stepson, Danny Pemberton, five grandchildren, Emma Peterson, Rachell Benjamin, Sarah Banks, Eric Pemberton and Katie Harris, and four great grandchildren, Knox Harris, Everly Pemberton, Brody Pemberton, and Kaden Ohlert.

Graveside service will be held 3 pm Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Trading Post Cemetery. Visitation will be held form 1 to 2:30 pm at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Mask wearing and social distancing will be observed. Contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, c/o Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box 304, La Cygne, KS 66040. Happenings in early February ~

1870 – Today’s issue of the Bates Co Record newspaper says a new Post office named after US Representative Burdette, has been established 2 miles north of Parkerville in Northwest Bates Co.
1911 – Captain J. B. Newberry, of Spruce, is attacked, and seriously injured, by a ferocious boar.
1929 – Bates Co Sheriff discovers some of his guests aren’t happy with their accommodations, as someone has sawed through 2 five inch steel plates on the ‘cage’.
1922 – Butler Fire chief George Keirsey and fireman Elmer Smullins return to Butler, from Kansas City, with Butler’s new fire truck, an International.  It replaces the horse drawn engine and truck loaned them by W. H. Smith.
1903 – His Fate Sealed.  Dr. J. L. Gartrell Will Hang for the Murder of D. B. Donegan.  March 6 the Date of Execution.  Supreme Court Affirms the Decision of the Lower Court.
1903 – The bowling alley on the east side of the Butler square is started up.  It is a fine place.  Mr. McCartney, a gentleman from Iowa, is the proprietor.
1872 – In regular session, the County Court creates Homer township out of part of Walnut township in western Bates County.
1911 – The cornerstone is laid for the new Butler High School, Pine & Havannah Streets.
1887 – The building housing the Walton Opera House and the Butler National Bank burns.
1911 – Walter Henry opens the new Henry Motor Company, selling dodge Brothers vehicles. Butler.
1913 – The town of Foster is breathing a sigh of relief as the smallpox epidemic seems to be under control.  Dr. Rhoades and Mayor Heymell are to be commended.  
1884 – Fay Templeton, an actress of note, plays to large crowds at the Rich Hill Opera House.
1874 – Esquire McReynolds fines 4 whiskey-sodden fighters $ 5 each for their part in the big row in front of Dixon’s Saloon. Butler.
1884 – Judge Gantt decides in the case of William Price vs Fannie Price, that one bucket of dishwater thrown on a man is not grounds for divorce.
1921 – The Bates Co Court order the County Clerk to burn the wolf scalps and the hawk and owl heads brought in for bounties each day.
1923 – The 11th annual Elks Minstrels begin a two night stand at the Fisk Opera House.  The show is staged and directed by Charles & Leta Fisk.

Obituary - Lois Mae Muiller

Lois Mae Muiller, 88, Adrian, MO, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2021 at the Adrian United Methodist Church in Adrian, with visitation from 1:00-2:00.

Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the Adrian United Methodist Church.

Storm siren testing this evening in Adrian

The Adrian Emergency Management Department will be testing the storm warning sirens this evening at 6:00 The siren located behind the Baptist church will not be tested due to scheduled electrical repairs that are being made. The siren is expected to be back in service next week.
