Updated Obituary - Paul Leonard Tenholder

INTERMENT will follow funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Montrose, Missouri.

Paul Leonard Tenholder, 75, was born in Clinton, Missouri on December 14, 1945. He was the son of Theodore George and Alma Marie (Cook) Tenholder. Paul passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas after a long fight with cancer.
Paul spent his formative years in the Montrose, Missouri, area where he graduated from high school in 1963. Shortly after completing his education, he married Linda Jones on August 14, 1965, his wife of 55 years. To this union four children were born: Greg, Connie, Matt, and Lori.
Paul worked on the family farm in the Montrose area all his life raising cattle, hogs, and row crops. Apart from this, he most enjoyed taking his family to Pomme de Terre Lake, camping and teaching them to water ski. He also loved traveling throughout the Great American West, especially the mountain area of Colorado. Paul’s family remained the most important thing to him and he loved spending many hours with his grandchildren, attending many sporting events. Throughout his life Paul remained a dedicated member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri and was an enthusiastic supporter of St. Mary’s School. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Preceding Paul in death were his parents, Theodore George and Alma Marie (Cook) Tenholder; and one grandson, Conner Tenholder; one brother, Don Tenholder and a sister, Joan Engeman.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Tenholder; children: Greg (Shirley) Tenholder, Connie (Jody) Rapp, Matt (Amanda) Tenholder, and Lori Burch; grandchildren: Nolan, Sydney, Hunter Tenholder; Abbey and Emily Rapp, Allison and Macey Tenholder and Madysen Faulkenberry, and Catherine Hooten; three sisters, Florence Tenholder, Blanche Jurgensmeyer, and Judy Steiger along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Missouri State Highway Patrol seeking public assistance in Cass County
On 3/12/21 around 11:20am, a person suspiciously fell from a moving car along northbound I-49 just north of Harrisonville (162mile marker).The person received minor injuries but was unable to describe how the incident occurred. Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper D. Bradshaw needs your help identifying a vehicle that was seen immediately after the person fell onto the highway.

Obituary - Charles Vernon Wright
Charles was raised in the Milo area attended El Dorado Springs High School and graduated from Barrington High School in Barrington, IL.. He served in the United States Army during WWII.
Charles worked in construction most of his life in California. He also lived and worked in Illinois for a time. Charles came back to Vernon County in 1991 and has continued to reside here since that time.
In addition to his wife Ruby, he is survived by his daughter, Barbara Schwinn (Jeffrey), Sheldon, MO and his son, Paul Wright, Gilroy, CA; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester Wright, Milo, MO; one sister, Ruby Kraft, Nevada, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Peggy Wright; one stepson, Sam Castlebury; brother Otis one sister-in-law, Bertha Wright; three nephews and three nieces.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Olive Branch Cemetery in Milo, MO with Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Butler Floods
Being located in the flat prairie of Lapland, where Kansas laps over into Missouri, Bates County has always been prone to flooding. Not in the sense of rolling whitewater, but by big expanses of backwater that pushed out over fields, roads, houses and other human influences. It wasn’t for nothing that the early French explorers called our local river Marais de Cygnes for “marsh of the swans.”
Most of the town of Butler may have been located on relatively high ground, about 100 feet above the river bottom land, but there are plenty of low spots around it that can flood during rainy conditions. I recall one particularly disastrous morning when I was inbound to Butler from the eastern part of the county. Deepwater Creek was out of its banks over H highway, and diverting north to D highway didn’t work because of water over the road at Stony Point east of Passaic. I finally backtracked up Z highway and zig-zagged to Passaic to come into town from the north.
In the 1960s, before four-lane U.S. 71 was built, it was common for the flats south of Butler to have standing flood waters covering the old two-lane 71 slab. I remember seeing a Missouri highway department truck leading a convoy of cars through the six-inches or so of water over the road. Part of Rattlesnake Hill, of course, was sacrificed to build the huge fill across the bottoms that we drive on today.
One learned which spots to avoid during heavy runoffs. South Main street at Mound Branch often flooded; Fran Haney had to be rescued from her house by boat one time. West 52 highway can flood temporarily at the railroad underpass, and west of town the Miami Creek bottoms could put water over 52 highway, west of the bridge. The same water closed county roads west of Three-Mile corner, south of Butler.
On one occasion, Butler became an island for part of a day. The main roads north, south, east and west were blocked by flood waters. I don’t remember if the railroad was washed out on that day, but there have been times that the Missouri Pacific’s roadbed was damaged enough to stop rail traffic.
The real old-timers always talk about the floods of ’51, when Kansas City was devastated by the overflowing rivers in 1951. We young whippersnappers are more prone to recalling 1993, when the Missouri River turned into a miles-wide lake. But Butler and Bates County has had its share of Big Water, just on a smaller scale. The Rich Hill and Papinville residents know all too well that B highway can become impassable, and further south, in Vernon County, the Little Osage and Marmaton rivers will wreak havoc.
Even the vaunted “Interstate 49” can be topped by flood waters. I have witnessed the Marmaton floodwaters cascading over the banked curve west of Compton Junction, and I’ve seen farm machinery parked on levees down in the bottoms, with only the tops of the cabs sticking out of the water. Nature rules, mankind’s puny influence notwithstanding.
