Obituary - Willard Dean Hodges

Willard Dean Hodges, of Garden City, Missouri was born August 4, 1929 in Lake City, Arkansas the son of H.C. and Julia (Bolding) Hodges. He departed this life on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Golden Years Care Services, Harrisonville, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 20 days.

On March 27, 1967, Willard was united in marriage to Elsie Lee Green in Sedalia, Missouri.

Willard was employed as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union. He was a 2nd Class Gunners Mate serving on an Escort Ship in the US Navy. He loved to fish and enjoyed growing a vegetable garden.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Hodges on April 12, 2005; two daughters, Debbie Sulser and Lucille Williams; his siblings, .Lynnoyette, Melbourne, Laverne, Donald, Joseph David, Willard, Carolyn Sue, and John.

He is survived by 5 grandchildren, Vanessa Dalton and husband Jason, Urich, Missouri, Josh Sulser, Independence, Missouri, Matthew Sulser and wife Elyse, Freeman, Missouri, Gabe Sulser, Garden City, Missouri and Sand Garrison; 4 great-grandchildren, Brenton Woolery, Chloe Dalton, Avery Dalton and Nolan Sulser; a sister-in-law, Ernestine Hodges, Boaz, Alabama; many nieces and nephews who loved him; other relatives and friends.

Cremation. No service scheduled at this time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri



Obituary - Lecil Fields

Lecil Fields, 82, of Horton, MO, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, MO. Lecil was born on September 5, 1938 in Black Jack, MO. In August 1963, Lecil married Carolyn and had two children. After 29 years of married, Carolyn preceded him in death in 1989. In November 1992, Lecil married Barbara and after 27 years of marriage she preceded him in death in 2019.

Lecil graduated high school in Stockton, MO and proudly served in the United States Navy. He was a truck driver for 55+ years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.

Lecil is survived by his son Dale (Shelly) Fields, Winston, MO; his daughter, Lisa (Larry) Hendrix, Fort Scott, KS; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Bryan, Michael (Ashley), Chesney, and Dylan; many great-grandchildren; as well as one stepbrother Larry (Betty) Floyd and a sister-in-law Janice Fields, both of El Dorado Springs, MO. Lecil was preceded in death by his wives, Carolyn and Barbara, as well as his stepbrother, Dean Floyd.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO. The family will receive friends following the service. There will be a private family burial at a later date.

After 35 successful and fun-filled years we have recently come to the decision to close the restaurant. This decision is certainly not without great sadness and emotion. We appreciate our staff and your loyalty through out the years and we wish you well! All relationships we have truly valued and will greatly miss.

Springfield man seriously injured in Cass County crash

On April 23rd around 5:40pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with Cass County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Missouri 2 Highway at State Route Z.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by 97 year old Thomas A. Wommack of Springfield, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment.

Mr. Wommack sustained serious injuries and he was transported by Garden City EMS to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by J's Southland Tow.

Attention Miami R-1 Promenade Watchers

Attention Prom “goers” and promenade watchers. Tonight there will not be valet parking. Students will enter their vehicles through the exit of the elementary School Where you will park your car in front of the elementary school both sides and walk to the north end outside of the gym to be announced into the Promenade.

If someone is dropping you off And taking the vehicle, they will enter through the regular marked entrance and drop you off in front of the gym. 

Spectators will enter through the regular entrance and park where what is customarily known as the “student parking” Please do not park in front of the high school on either side. Bleachers are set up for everyone to watch the promenade.


Warmer Weather, Finally

Warmer weather is expected for Sunday into the first half of next week. That warmth will come with some wind though, especially Monday and Tuesday. The next chance for storms comes mainly Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Nevada Speedway Cancelled Tonight

We tried our best everyone but unfortunately we cannot get the track ready for tonight.

We tried our best but with some of the equipment down and not wanting to make a call early as some teams travel from far away.

The races are cancelled for tonight April 24th.


Obituary - Linda Sue Carter

Linda Sue Carter, 73, of Appleton City, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021, at her home. Linda’s wishes were to be cremated. 

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held by the family at a later date. Fond memories and condolences can be left online at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com.

Linda was born on September 3rd, 1947, the youngest of six children to Joseph “Buck” and Frances (Kelly)Ward, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She grew up in Tulsa where she met and married the love of her life, Avil Lewis Carter, in 1963. Together they had three children: William “Billy”, Sharron and Avil “JR” Jr.

Linda was an avid reader, writer and had a love for music and dancing. She loved animals of all kinds, but always had a special place in her heart and room in her home for her dogs. She fiercely loved her family and enjoyed spending time with all of them throughout the years.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband and parents, children Billy and Sharron, and siblings, Kelly and Paulette.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, JR and Heather Carter of Rio Rancho, NM and adopted daughter Kamie Martin of the home. Siblings Vivian Gomez of Greeley, CO, Cecilia Davis of Deepwater, MO and Carl Ward of Owasso, OK. She had one grandson, Zachary Carter, of Midwest City, OK, and two great-granddaughters, Karma and Evelyn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.
