Obituary - Myrna Loy (Harleman) Stokes

Myrna Loy (Harleman) Stokes, age 80, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Appleton City, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Villa Maria Care Center in Tucson. She was born November 12, 1942, in Appleton City, Missouri, the daughter of Clyde and Cecil Arlene (Hill) Harleman.

Myrna Loy graduated from Appleton City High School, class of 1960. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Michael Stokes, on June 16, 1976. She attended Oklahoma State University School of Technical Training in Okmulgee, Oklahoma where she received an associate degree in culinary arts in 1986. Myrna Loy loved cooking, shopping, and fishing.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Harleman and Arlene Harleman, her son, Kevin King. Myrna Loy is survived by her children and grandchildren, Derrick Drake of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri and his two sons, Gary and Cody: Brenda (Linhart) Davis and George of Tucson, Arizona, their three children, Dallas, Brittni and Zachary and finally Brian Linhart of Tucson, Arizona and his daughter, Madeline. In addition to her children, Myrna Loy is survived by her brother, Roy Harleman of Versailles, Missouri, her sisters, Peggi (Harleman) Sargent & Steve of Versailles, Missouri, and Holly (Harleman) Martin of Moberly, Missouri, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service for Myrna will begin at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Hill & Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, MO.

Visitation will precede the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Butler, MO.

Memorial Those who wish to remember Myrna Loy in a special way, make gifts or donations in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.

Stabbing at crowded music event in Belton

On 4/9/2023 at 8:18 PM, Belton officers were dispatched to a fight with a potential stabbing at a crowded music event in the area of 164th and Prospect Ave.

Officers on the scene located a male subject in the parking lot area. This subject was not wearing a shirt and had what appeared to be blood on his head. Officers noticed he had an empty knife sheath on his belt. A witness on the scene approached officers stating that the male subject stabbed another male who was located at the pedestrian security checkpoint.

Officers and medics made their way to the victim, who was transported to the ER emergent. The victim had multiple wounds to his neck, arm, and torso. The suspect was also transported to a different hospital for evaluation. Once medically cleared, he was then released to the Belton Jail pending charges. Officers processed the scene and recovered a knife that was secured for evidence.

Further investigation revealed there were two additional victims who self-transported to an area ER. One had an injury to the hands, while the other subject was stabbed in his left torso region. The identities of the victims and the suspect are not being released at this time.

Update: Charges filed in Belton Stabbing

On 4-10-2023, the Cass County Prosecutor's Office obtained charges against Damien Jefferson of Grandview in reference to the stabbing which occurred on 4-9-2023 in the 15500 block of the E Outer Rd. 

Mr. Jefferson was charged with one count of Assault in the 1st Degree and one count of Armed Criminal Action

Mr. Jefferson is currently being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.

On 4-9-2023 at 10:49 AM, Belton officers were dispatched to a storage complex in the 15500 block of the East Outer Rd. on a fight in progress involving a knife.

Officers arrived and observed a male suspect repeatedly stabbing a male victim. The suspect was ordered to drop the knife and he complied immediately. 

The suspect was then taken into custody without incident. Belton officers rendered medical aid to the victim until Belton EMS arrived a short time later.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition. The suspect was taken to the Belton Municipal Jail pending charges. The identities of the victim and suspect are not being released at this time.

Two arrested after search warrant served in rural Peculiar

On 04-07-23, at approximately 5:00 pm, deputies responded to 23000 S Hanging Tree Lane, in rural Peculiar, in reference to a stolen vehicle. Deputies obtained a search warrant and located 5 additional stolen vehicles in various states of being disassembled. 

Several other vehicle parts were also recovered at the scene. Detectives are currently attempting to identify the owners of those vehicle parts. Two subjects were arrested at the scene.
 
On 04-08-23, Darren Pendergast (36) from Peculiar Missouri, was charged by a Cass County Judge with 5 counts of Accessory Tampering With Motor Vehicle (1st Degree), and one count of Accessory Sale/Possession Of Equipment Or Parts With Altered/Missing/Falsified Identification Numbers. His bond has been set at $25,000 Cash Only.
 
A second subject, Dakota Pendergrast (32) from Peculiar Missouri, was also charged by a Cass County Judge with with 5 counts of Accessory Tampering With Motor Vehicle (1st Degree), and one count of Accessory Sale/Possession Of Equipment Or Parts With Altered/Missing/Falsified Identification Numbers. Her bond has been set at $15,000 / 10% Cash Only.

Sherwood hires new Elementary Principal

The Sherwood School Board of Education is excited to announce that Mr. Jerico Burasco will begin as Elementary Principal starting August 1, 2023. Mr. Burasco grew up in Lee’s Summit and graduated from Lee’s Summit West in 2011.

He earned his Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at Missouri Western State University where he also played baseball. He then went on to complete my Masters Degree from NWMSU.

Mr. Burasco taught at Harrisonville Elementary School for the past 7 years where he taught 2nd grade and then 3rd grade. He has been a baseball coach with the district during that time as well.

Mr. Burasco shared, "My amazing wife, Jackie, and I just welcomed our first son, Brooks, to our family last August, and we are very excited to get to know the students, staff, and community of the Sherwood School District."
