Calhoun man sentenced for kidnapping and sexual abuse case

Colby Thornton, 20 of Calhoun, Missouri was sentenced to seventeen (17) years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for burglary in the first degree, kidnapping in the first degree and sexual abuse in the first degree.

The Henry County Prosecuting Attorney filed the case against Thornton in December 2019. The case stems from an investigation by the Henry County Sheriff Office of a home invasion that occurred in Calhoun on December 17, 2019.

Mr. Thornton who was 17 years of age at the time broke into the residence at night. While in the residence, Thornton sexually assaulted the elderly homeowner and tied the victim to furniture with electrical tape. Thornton then left the scene with the victim’s vehicle and a number of items including the victim’s debit card.

Deputies located the victim’s vehicle in the area some time later and followed footprints to Thornton’s location, where he was then taken into custody. DNA evidence later confirmed Thornton’s presence in the home and in physical contact with the victim. Video footage obtained from local businesses also assisted in confirming Thornton’s involvement.

Uncontrollable circumstances prolonged the case over the last three years, however, the agencies involved worked diligently for justice for the victim. The Sheriff’s Office worked extensively to fully investigate, collect, and have evidence tested. During the pendency of the case, Henry County Prosecuting Attorney LaChrisha Gray sought to preserve the testimony of the victim whose declining health required a move out of state, which was accomplished through the help of that other state’s district attorney.

On April 12, 2023, Thornton pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years for burglary, twelve years for kidnapping and five years for sexual abuse.

The five year sentence for the count of sexual abuse is to run consecutive to the other counts. Therefore, Thornton’s controlling sentence will be seventeen years. Because of the nature of the crimes, the law requires that he serve nearly twelve years of that sentence before being eligible for release on parole.

Two arrested on theft and property damage charges

On 4/21/23 at approximately 2:00am deputies responded to a rural address in Amoret. The response was due to an ongoing investigation of irrigation copper thefts.

For the last couple years Bates County has had a rash of farm field irrigation units being stripped of the copper wiring in the middle of the night. This crime cost the farmers over $10,000 of electrical work every time it happens and many have been victims multiple times.

The Sheriff’s Office has been working with area farmers to target those crimes. Most recently the Sheriff’s Office deployed covert technology to detect and notify the Sheriff’s Office of the crime at real time.

At 2am this morning that technology notified deputies of a person who was in the process of stripping one of the irrigation units. Deputies flooded the area and took two persons into custody while in the act of stealing the copper wire. Both a male and female were transported to the Sheriff’s Office where the investigation continue into this afternoon.

Evidence collected through the investigation has connected the two person to people in custody to multiple irrigation thefts in Bates County to exceed the total reported loss of over $100,000.

Shannon K Brundage, 7/7/82 of Harrisonville Mo (reportedly recently moved to Adrian) has been charged with 3 counts of felony property damage and one count of felony attempted theft. Bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety.

Courtney R Patterson, 10/25/1976, of Adrian Mo had been charged with 3 counts of felony property damage and one count of felony attempted theft. Bond was set at $20,000 cash or surety. The investigation continues with addition charges expand may cross many county lines.

“This crime duo has cost our farmers collectively more than $100,000 in damages. They steal from hard working people just to take the wire over to a recycling center and get Pennies on the dollar.” Says Sheriff Anderson. “We have been frustrated along with our farming community and today we hope we have brought this kind of theft to a stop in Bates County.

Let this serve to the others that think this is ok, we are deploying the right technology to catch you and bring you to justice.”

Coach Wheeler told us, "Josie is a junior this school year. She has earned 21 gold medals this track season. Also, she has broken her own school record that she set last year in the 100 meter dash. She broke this record at the Adrian track meet last week setting a new record of 12.53. Josie was a part of the 4x200 meter relay team that broke the school record at Archie on Monday.

The new record is 1:51.39. The previous record was set in 1992 in which Josie's mother, Jennifer (Hellebuyck) Parks was a member of that relay team. Josie has great work ethic and is determined to do her best each and every day whether it be in the classroom or athletics. Josie is a great teammate. She is encouraging, supportive, and has high expectations for her team.

Josie not only excels on the track but also in the classroom. She is a member of the National Honor Sociery. Josie is a multi sport athlete and has played an important role in all Drexel girls sports teams. Josie has has had a lot of success so far and we asked her how she continued to stay motivated to get better and improve. She stated, “I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates.

Without them I wouldn't be where I am today. We push each other to be the best we can and perform to the best of our abilities. It really does go a long way.” We asked her to state what it takes to be an elite athlete. She replied with, "determination.

You have to have a lot of focus and dedication. There is so much commitment when you're an athlete." Finally, we asked Josie what advice she has for younger athletes. She said, "focus on your grades and make sure you're excelling in your classroom. Also, always push your teammates and yourself. Just have fun." Josie's favorite memory with track has been winning a state championship. Congratulations Josie! We wish you and your team the best of luck finishing this track season.

Tom received an MS in Education from Kansas State University in 1966 and continued to be a life-long learner. Tom married his college sweetheart, Mardonna (Mardy) Duncan and they enjoyed 45 wonderful years together building lasting memories with family and friends.

He was genuine, compassionate, and encouraging to everyone his life intersected with, and you always knew just where you stood with him. Tom is preceded in death by an infant brother, his parents, his brother Richard (Dick) Hedges, his beloved wife Mardy and daughter Elizabeth (Beth) Altergott.
