Traffic Alert: Semi truck rollover accident just north of Adrian

The Adrian Fire Department along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies, Bates County EMS and Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers are on scene of a semi truck rollover accident on the outer road of I-49 near Heritage Tractor north of Adrian at this time.

The driver of the truck is said to have minor injuries and he is being checked out at the scene by EMS.

Please use caution if you must travel in this area!

Obituary - Terry Donald "Woody" Wood

Terry Donald Wood, “Woody” age 72, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas passed away early Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was born September 15, 1950, in Ft. Scott, the son of William Vern Wood and Juanita June Johnston Wood. 

Woody graduated from the Uniontown High School with the Class of 1968 and then graduated from the Ft. Scott Junior College. He married Susan Bollinger on April 13, 1985, at Ft. Scott. 

Woody worked for Kansas City Power & Light at the Lacygne Power Plant. He retired as an electrician/technician after forty years of service. Woody enjoyed woodworking, a talent he received from his father, and completed many projects including treasure boxes for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing. 

Favorite times were spent at the “farm” where Woody enjoyed cutting wood, clearing trails and spending time outdoors. Country road cruzin in the razor with his friends he enjoyed immensely. And of course, a few cold ones.

Survivors include his wife, Susan, of the home; three children, Shane Wood (Amy) of Overland Park, Kansas, Shannon “Sis” Pulliam (Kyle) of Arizona City, Arizona and Shannon Bollinger, of Ft. Scott and eight grandchildren, Chance and Chase Crawford, Derek, Drew, Dylan and Dalton Bollinger and Bentley and Jett Wood. Also surviving is a sister, Sherry Hicks of Palm Desert, California. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and June Wood.

Rev. Dusty Drake will conduct funeral services at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 8th at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Care to Share or the Wounded Warrior Project and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Good Luck Briley!

Butler, Mo- A young southwest Missouri girl is going for a national title this week. Briley Mason, 8, of Butler, Mo will be completing in the Little Miss United State Agriculture national pageant on Friday and Saturday. The event takes place in Enterprise, Alabama.

Briley is the daughter of Myles and Kelsey Mason of rural Butler. She won the Bates county competition and then went on to win the Missouri Advocacy Ambassador state title in Maryville November 2022. Briley loves showing sheep and pigs, spending time with her family and friends and reading.

One of Briley’s fondest memories during her reign was volunteering at Community CafĂ©. Serving others and spreading the word of the importance of agriculture in the classroom.

Briley will be a third grader at Butler Elementary in the fall. Good luck Briley!


Obituary - Joe Edward Winter

Joe Edward Winter, 84, Richards, MO passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Medicalodges Fort Scott following a brief illness. Joe was born October 2, 1938 in Deerfield, MO to Earl P. and Dana M. (Clark) Winter. He fell in love in the 7th grade with Shirley I. Goddard and married his childhood sweetheart on April 23, 1960 in Nevada, MO and she survives of the home.

Joe, a lifelong resident of Richards, MO, graduated from Richards High School in 1957. Following high school, he took his first job working for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita where he worked for two years. Upon his return to Richards, he began working for MODOT where he worked until his retirement in 1996. Joe was proud to live in Richards. He was instrumental in bringing rural water to the Richards area, helped start the Richards Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the Richards City Council. He enjoyed attending Antique Gas Engine and Tractor shows, and also attending Garden Tractor Pulling. Joe was a member of the Clayton Christian Church in Eve, MO.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by a son, Joe Lee Winter of the home, and a daughter, Glenda Wolf (Ron), Deerfield; three granddaughters, Casey Fogle (John) Richards, MO, Amanda Ast (Kerry), Deerfield, and Natalie Kitsmiller (J.T.), Deerfield; five great-grandchildren, Michael Fogle, Annabelle Ast, Keeton Ast, Lucas Kitsmiller, and Colt Kitsmiller; two sisters, Patty Brannon (Rob), Salinas, CA, and Evelyn Winter-Blevins, Aurora, MO; one brother, Sam Winter (Sandy), Summerville, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Jack Winter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Roger Beach officiating. Interment will follow in Stevens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

MoDOT TRAFFIC ALERT: Business Loop 49 CLOSED Under I-49 North of Butler July 10-14th as Rehabilitation of Bridge Continues

Business Loop 49 CLOSED Under I-49 Near Butler July 10-14th as Rehabilitation of Bridge Continues:

Where: Business Loop 49 under I-49 north of Butler
When: 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 10-14th

What: Business Loop 49 CLOSED while contractor crews work to remove bridge deck/driving surface on southbound I-49 bridge

Traffic Impacts: All lanes of Loop 49 CLOSED in both directions under I-49 while crews are working

All lanes of Loop 49 OPEN during nighttime hours
No signed detours

Drivers may encounter occasional future closures of Loop 49 as work on the I-49 bridge progresses

Signs and message board will alert drivers approaching work zone
Drivers should seek alternate route

Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

Weather and/or scheduling conflicts could alter the work schedule.

Details: When the southbound I-49 bridge is complete, work will stop for the winter and the traffic pattern will return to all lanes in each direction. The contractor plans to resume work on the northbound bridge beginning in the spring of 2024.

Total project cost: $4 million
