Traffic stop leads to arrest in Bates County

On 7/6/23 at approximately 11:30 pm a Deputy made a traffic stop in Butler. A request for a K-9 unit was made. 

The stop lead to the recovery of multiple grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

On 7/7/23, the Bates County Prosecutor applied for and received an arrest warrant for Austin C Smith of Lamar Missouri formerly of Butler. Mr. Smith was formally from Butler and is currently on Probation and Parole for possession of dangerous drugs.

Mr. Smith was charged with Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety. At the time of this press release Mr. Smith posted bond this afternoon.

Cass County Sheriff's Office Operation AWARE

On Thursday evening, deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office conducted Operation AWARE in the Belton and Raymore area. This operation, The Adam Walsh Act Residency Enforcement, was designed to ensure that registered sex offenders are in compliance with all state and federal laws.
 
Of the 60 offenders contacted, 51 were in compliance with registry requirements, 5 required additional follow up investigations, and 4 were found to be non-compliant.

All non-compliant offenders, depending on the extent of their violations, may be facing additional criminal charges. 

No offenders were taken into custody at this time. Deputies also apprehended a suspect who was operating a stolen vehicle.

Obituary - Mary Jo Cook

Mary Jo Cook, age 62 of Peculiar, Missouri formerly of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Belton Regional Medical Center, Belton, Missouri. She was born November 1, 1960 to Harvey Jo and Vera Christine Podobnik Richey in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Mary Jo is survived by her husband, Dwayne Cook of Peculiar, Missouri; a son, Anthony Cook and wife Kristi of Raymore, Missouri; her 6 year old grandson, Harrison Cook; and a brother, Randy Richey of Joplin, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary Jo’s wishes were to be cremated. There are no public services at this time. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Contributions to an animal shelter of one’s choice. Online condolences www.schowengerdtchapel.com.

Update: Texas man dead after being struck by vehicle in Cass County

The victim from the death investigation that occurred 07-05-23, in the area of D Highway north of 203rd Street, has been identified as Robert S Shytle (30) from Bedford, Texas.

Based on witness statements and evidence, Detectives were able to identify the vehicle involved in the incident early Wednesday afternoon. “Due to the hard work of our investigators, we were able to quickly locate the vehicle that was involved in this incident,” said Sheriff Weber.

The Sheriff’s Office recovered the vehicle involved and a person of interest was interviewed. That subject was subsequently released pending further investigation.

Some generous donations

 

Local civic groups were busy this week making donations (above) the Butler Lions Club and Butler Rotary Club Presented the Butler Public Library a combined $3,200 to replace items due to flood damage. L-R Lions President Wayne Vermillion, Library Director Kathleen Busick, Rotary President David Hilgenberg and Rotary Secretary Julie Highley.

Below, Wayne Vermillion presents a $1,000 check to the Bates County Juvenile Office to help cover expenses related to a three day annual camp for foster children at Kamp Keirsey near Amsterdam, Mo. As some 60 kids attended this year, Amanda Mincey and Jennifer Stockdale gladly accepted the proceeds.



President Wayne Vermillion presented a check for $1,000 on behalf of the Butler Lions Club to Brenda Cecil of the Bates County Elks to help offset expenses related to Sponsoring Safety Village each year, teaching young children how to  safely navigate the streets.

Obituary - Danny George Gochnauer

Danny George Gochnauer, age 76, Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away peacefully Monday, June 26, 2023, after two years of declining health, he had a stroke.

Danny was born September 26, 1946, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of William (Bill) and Helen (Bonnie) Elizabeth (Fleming) Gochnauer. 

Danny is survived by his sister, Billie Jean Skurdal (Evan); nephew, Brian Skurdal (Hether) and their children, Elijah, Tatum, Evan; and many cousins.

Danny grew up in Belton, Missouri where he attended public schools, graduating from Belton High School in 1964. He was active in the theater and musicals during his high school years.

Danny had a love for music that he inherited from his mother who was a professional singer in the 1940’s. He had a passion and intense interest in the theater and musicals. Danny spent most of his life on the Carmel peninsula and was well known for acting up and down the peninsula. He co-started with Jeremy Slate in the movie Dead Pit.

Returning to Belton in the 1990’s to be close to his mother in her last years. During this time Danny worked for Animal rescue, HyVee and then Target from which he retired in 2021.

Our family is grateful to know that Danny is finally at peace.
