Butler Varsity Bears too much for Hume Hornets

For the boys, it was the same introductory story as the ladies side of things, just flips the roles. The Butler Bears came into the game the favorites, sitting at 13-6, on the heels of a 3 game hot streak. The Hornets flew into the contest with a 9-11 record, sitting just a few games under .500.

After some defensive pressure from the Bears led to a steal by Jake Chandler, Jake would go to the line and give the Bears a 2-0 opening lead. Morrison would strike back with a deep three to go up 3-2. The two teams would trade buckets for a while until the Bears would rattle off a 16-0 run. The Bears would take a 24-9 lead after 8 minutes.

The Bears would continue to put up points and extend their run to 25-6 forcing the Hornets to call a time-out, down 33-15 with just under 5 minutes to go until the intermission. The Hornets came out of the time-out with a fire lit underneath them, going on a quick 4 run. Chase Payne was able to break the Hume run with a 3 ball, but the Hornets would answer with a deep shot of his own. The Bears went into the locker room with a 40-30 lead.

In the first half, it was the Beriah Morrison and Carter Trumbore show as the two were trading baskets. Morrison had 18 at the break on 3/6 from deep while Carter answered with 22, going 4/7 range.

Out of the locker room, Bryson Morrison (who sat most of the 1st half with foul trouble) converted and-one to shrink the Bears led to 7. Butler would answer with a quick 7-0 run before Morrison would hit yet another 3 with a hand in his face. The Bears would grow their margin with a 6-0 run, stretching the lead to 53-36. The Bears were atop the Hornets 58-41 after 3 rounds.

In the fourth and final period, Hume would try and spark a comeback with a 5-1 run to open the period. But it was too little, too late, as the Bears were able to secure a 64-53 victory.

It was a great team win for Butler as they had a plethora of Bears filling up the stat sheet. Trumbore led all scoring with 31pts and 6rebs. Davidson recorded another double-double with 17pts, 14rebs, and a steal and a block, Chandler had 7pts, 7rebs, and 3 steals, while Mallatt had 4pts, 4stls. Both Trumbore and Davidson both shot over 50 percent from the floor here on senior night.

Hume was led by Beriah Morrison with 24.

Butler Lady Bears drop a close one to the Hume Hornets

The Butler Lady Bears had their work cut out for them on Monday night as the Hume Lady Hornets flew into the Bears Den. The Lady Hornets are in the midst of a historical season, they come in the night with a very impressive 18-2 record and seeking to extend their 12 game winning streak. On the other end, the Lady Bears have dropped 5 of their last 6 and have their eyes set on getting their young team back in the winning column.

The Lady Bears opened the contest with 3 turnovers in their first 3 possessions, but luckily for them, the Hornets were unable to convert on the first 2 take-always. However, Morrison would get fouled after the 3rd Bears turnover and go to the line and sink a pair of free throws to jumpstart the scoring and grab an early 2-0 lead. Dubray would answer back with a traditional 3 pint play off of a put-back and give the Bears a 3-2 lead. The lead wouldn’t last very long, however, as both teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the period, with a score of 13-12 in favor of the Hornets after 1.

To open the 2nd, the Hornets went on a quick 4-0 run before the Bears woke up and Dubray was able to grab a steal and go coast to coast for a Bears bucket to break the run. The two teams would once again go back-and-forth for much of the quarter, and the Bears would hang around with a score of 21-20 at half.

At the break, the Bears found themselves trailing by only 1 on the back of some stout defense. The Bears held the Lady Hornets to 31 percent shooting from the floor in the half and 12 percent from deep. The Bears forced half a dozen Hume turnovers as well. Butler, at the intermission, were able to improve their free throw shooting, going 4/5 from the line. The Lady Bears also were smarter with their 3 point shooting selection and went 2/5 from deep on the half.

The Bears score first in the 2nd half with a jumper off of fingertips of Haven Humphrey, the bucket would give the Lady Bears a 22-21 advantage early in the 3rd. Chloe Fritts drove home a 3 to extend the Butler lead to 25-21. Humphrey would continue the Butler run with an and-one basket before Morrison would finally answer back with a long jumper for the Hornets. Dubray drilled a 3 pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to end the 3rd quarter. The Bears outscored the Hornets 12-2 in the quarter to take a 32-23 into the 4th and final.

Snider flushed a 3 to start the 4th in an attempt to spark a come-back for the Hornets. But the Bears would not relent, despite the effort of the Hornets. Butler was able to control the tempo and slow down the game for a bit as they clung to a lead. In the final four minutes of the contest, Morrison hammered home a 3 to once again narrow the gap. But the Bears went to the line, where Haven was able to knock down a couple of clutch free throws.

After a Butler turnover, the Hornets cut the lead to 2. Following another Butler turnover, Morrison tickled the twine with a deep ball to take a 40-39 advantage with about 2 minutes remaining in the game. With under 1 minute left, Kylee Dubray was able to draw an offensive foul against Morrison to give the Bears the ball back with 44 seconds left, trailing by 1. The Bears ended up turning the ball back over to the Lady Hornets and sending Rogers to the line who went 2-2 and gave the Lady Hornets a 3 point, 42-39 lead. At the final buzzer, the Hornets escaped with a 42-39 victory.

The Lady Bears showed a lot of fight taking a very good Hume team to the wire. The Bears were led by Dubray with 10pts. Haven pitched in 9pts and 8rebs as well while Carmichael chipped in with 7pts and 8rebs.

The Hornets were led by Morrison and Rogers each with 12pts.
