Butler Police Department welcomes new officers

Please join us in welcoming Officer Todd Hecox and Officer Christian Lee to the Butler Police Department!

Officer Hecox comes to us with approximately 10 years of experience. Officer Hecox is a Bates County native and previously served at the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Lee comes to us with approximately 5 years of experience, previously serving at the Harrisonville Police Department.

Butler boys basketball rolls over Warsaw

The Butler Varsity Boys Basketball Team made the trip to Warsaw tonight to take on the Wildcats in a Ozark Highlands Conference match up. Butler led most the game coming away with a 56-39 victory.

The bears was led by Senior Carter Trumbore who had 21 points and Senior Dylan Davidson had 18 while Sophomore Jake Chandler pitched in 13 to lead the bears.

Butler will move its record to 16-6 on the season and the bears will hit the road on Tuesday February 13th as they travel to take on the Oak Grove Panthers.

Rich Hill boys too strong for Appleton City

The Rich Hill men would be attempting to prevent Appleton from completing the sweep. The Tigers come in on the heels of a great season, and they would look to continue rolling with the Bulldogs in town.

Dillion Coonce would win the opening tip, and Brayden Chandler would immediately drive to the rack and sink a lay-up. The Tigers would take an early 4-0 advantage before a three by Setzer would give the Bullldogs a 5-4 lead after 1 and a half minutes of play. 

Both teams would continue to swap scores for a bit until the Tigers went on a 11-2 run, which started after Brayden Chandler grabbed a steal, followed by an and-one basket. The run would put the Tigers up 21-12 and prompt the Bulldogs to take a time-out to try and calm the storm. Out of the Appleton time-out, the Tigers would continuing their roaring run and they would lead the Bulldogs 29-16 after the opening 8.

The Bulldogs would begin the 2nd with the ball, Looney would hit a three to trigger an offensive showcase that saw both teams trade scores. The Tigers would finally grab another run, this time it would be a 12-1 run in favor of Rich Hill. Oerihng would eventually stop the bleeding for the Bulldogs with a traditional 3-point play. The Tigers would end the half by outsourcing the Bulldogs 7-2 in the last 2 minutes of the second period. The Tigers would carry a 52-30 lead into the intermission.

Rich Hill would kick-off the second half action with possession and but they would turnover the basketball. Williams would record the first point of the half with a post basket. Brayden Chandler would answer for the the Rich Hill Tigers, leading to a scoring outburst that saw the Tigers outscore the Bulldogs 13-2. Facing a 65-36 deficit, Williams would finally fire back with a bucket, but the Tigers would continue to roll, taking a 32 point lead into the final 8 minutes (72-40)

With the game in hand, the Tigers would give some minutes to their bench, who would help the Tigers cruise to an 85-54 victory.

Brayden Chandler led all scores with 26 points. The Tigers saw 8 players score the rock, Coonce recorded a double-double with 19 points, 16 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Zane Becker had 16 points, and Dylan Black chipped in 12.

The Bulldogs were led by Ronye Williams with an effective 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting.

Obituary - Jordan Allen Tumm

Jordan Allen Tumm, 33, Nevada, MO passed away at his home on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Jordan was born September 13, 1990 in Fresno, CA, to Dennis L. and Sonya K. (Vannoy) Tumm.

Jordan came to Nevada with his family in 1993. He attended school in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School Class of 2009. 

Following high school, he attended Missouri State University in West Plains for two years. Jordan has worked at Buzz’s BBQ in Nevada for the past six years. He also was an umpire for over 10 years for Nevada Little League Baseball. In his spare time, he enjoyed league bowling, and frisbee golf.

Survivors include his mother, Sonya Tumm, Nevada; a sister, Samantha Tumm (Janes), Nevada; and a brother, James Tumm (Amanda), Nevada; a niece, Alima, nephew, Dylan, and niece, Madisyn; paternal grandmother, Janet Preston, Wisconsin; two uncles, Mike Tumm, and Tom Tumm, both of Wisconsin; several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive, as well as his many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Tumm.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 from 1-4:00 p.m. at the Nevada Eagles Lodge in Nevada – north doors.

Memorials are suggested to the family c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Interim police chief appointed in the city of Harrisonville

The Harrisonville Police Department is proud to announce that Lieutenant Darla Harris has been appointed as the Interim Chief of Police for the City of Harrisonville.

Harris will be taking on this crucial role during the interim period, bringing with her a wealth of experience, dedication and understanding of our community. 

Harris has been an integral part of our police force and has consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents and staff.

We are confident that Interim Chief Harris will continue to uphold the high standards of service that we expect from the Harrisonville Police Department.

Montrose Bluejays Pink Night Fundraising week

Shout out to the Montrose R-14 Bluejays who donated $1,065 for cancer care at BCMH from their Pink Night fundraising last week! The donation will be used toward the Infusion Center renovation, projected to be completed this summer. Our thanks to the students, coaches, teachers, parents and all who contributed. 

Your donation will help cancer patients in our community have convenient access to cancer treatments and other infusions. This is especially important for those who are too ill to drive, don't or can't drive, and for their caregivers. Thank you, Bluejays!!

Lady bulldogs too much for lady tigers

On Friday night, Rich Hill prepared to host the Appleton City Bulldogs on what was court-warming for the Tigers. 

For the ladies, the Bulldogs come in with a very impressive 18-3 record on the year. They are led by a young core who are looking to bounce back from going 2-2 in their last 4 contests after rattling off an 8 game win streak in the mid-part of the season. The Lady Tigers were coming off of a 44-27 win over Drexel and would be looking to ride that momentum in the current contest.

The opening tip-off was secured by Appleton who turned the ball over into the hands of the Lady Tigers to start the contest. Appleton would eventually draw first blood, and jumped out to an early 9-0 lead until Coonce was able to put in a free throw to get Rich Hill on the board and spark a quick 3-0 run. At the conclusion of the first, the Bulldogs led the Tigers 11-3.

After Appleton struck first in the second period, the Lady Tigers would answer back with a few buckets of their own. After the brief bucket exchange, the Tigers would rattle off a 7-3 run to find themselves trailing just 25-14 going into the break. The second quarter was more tightly contested as Rich Hill would only be outscored 14-11 in the period.

Engeman triggered the scoring for the ‘dogs in the second half, but Miller fired back with a basket for Rich Hill. Kady James laid down a three ball for Appleton, but was followed by Miller hitting a couple of jumpers, then a deep ball from Burris that sparked a 7-2 run by the Tigers. The Rich Hill run forced the Appleton Coach to signal a time-out, leading 32-25. Phelps would hit a shot from distance to initiate a 5-0 Tigers run and find themselves trialing by just 4 (34-30). Appleton would score last in the quarter, taking a 36-30 advantage in the fourth and final quarter.

To begin the final quarter, the Bulldogs would drive the basket and score first, before Phelps sunk a 3 ball to pull back within 5 (38-33). It would be back and forth action for much fourth quarter, until Appleton City would close out the game with a 10-2 run to grab a 53-29 win.

Olivia Engeman led all scores with 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs had 8 players record a basket on the night.

The Lady Tigers were led by Lanie Phelps with 11 points, followed by Kayden Coonce with 10 points and 8 boards.
