Obituary - Lucille "Lucy" Fay Howe

Lucille "Lucy" Fay Howe age 85 of Peculiar, Missouri departed this life Friday, April 12, 2024 at Golden Years Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2024 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with a private Internment at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Warrensburg, Missouri.

Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2024 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Last week, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a Facebook post in regards to foot traffic along the railroad tracks north of Amsterdam Missouri. The report was of two males who appear to be of Hispanic descent. The same report also reported that shortly after they observed the males, a female with two children was observed.

Today we received a call in reference to a Hispanic male sitting on the back porch of a residence on County Road 10002. The male left the area traveling on foot to the northeast into a wooded area. Deputies arrived to the area and began searching the area. Drones were deployed along with deputies on foot.
While making contact with residents in the area, deputies were advised of several other residents who had observed two adult males, one female and one to two children.

The Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate the group or individuals to identify them and assess whether the children has needs that need to be met.

The group or individuals have not been deemed dangerous. We are letting the area know of their presence and ask that if you come in contact with them please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 660-679-3232.

Obituary - Ronald Knutson

Ronald Anthony Knutson, 86, Nevada, MO passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Bungalow’s in Nevada. Ron was born December 14, 1937, in Gary, SD to Carl B. and Gertie (Sleaper) Knutson. He married Mary Buchholtz and three children were born to this union: Rae Deane, Debra, and Rhonda. He later married Sharron Kay McWilliams on April 8, 1983, in Mt. Home, ID and she preceded him in death on July 6, 2023.

Ron moved to Minnesota at a young age with his family. He grew up in Verdi, MN, and graduated from Verdi Public High School Class of 1956. Right out of high school, Ron joined and enjoyed a distinguished career in the Air Force, including two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze star with “V” device for Valor. He retired from the Air Force after 24 years and then served an additional 20 years in the US Civil Services until his retirement. Ron resided in Southern Idaho for more than 2 decades and came to Vernon County, MO in 2000.

Survivors include his five children, Rae Dean Brooks (Roy), Mt. Home, ID, Debra Jourdan (James), Mt. Home, ID, Rhonda Cone (Rod), Carnation, WA, Danny McWilliams (Angie), El Dorado Springs, MO, and Lindsey Covington (Lee), Nevada, MO; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rhoda Thomas, Sioux Falls, SD, and Dorothea Howell (Harvey), Centerview, MO; one brother, Carl Knutson (Carolyn), Verdi, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Sharron, he was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; a brother, Norman Knutson; and a sister, Marlys Bruemmer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Rev. Aaron Schumann officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the National Cemetery, Fort Scott, KS at 12:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Faith Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, KS in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Obituary - Sandra Fay Lessley

Sandra Fay Lessley, age 62, resident of Fort Scott, KS died Friday, April 12, 2024, at North Point Skilled Nursing in Paola, KS. She was born May 23, 1961, in Webb City, MO the daughter of James Lee and Dorothy Lavona Collins Petty. 

Sandra worked for Med Plans Insurance Company and later in daycare.  She enjoyed dancing, camping, and spending time with her family. Sandra was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. She had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need.

Survivors include her son Alex Lessley; siblings LarryThompson, Linda Thompson, and Lenda Tibby; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrel and Roy Thompson, a nephew, Bryan Mize, and her parents.

There was cremation. Interment will be announced later to take place later in West Liberty Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott, KS. Words of remembrance may be submitted online at cheneywitt.com.

City of Adrian may face issues related to grant usage at former Manor

Coming late in the Monday session of the Adrian board of alderman it was disclosed that the city may face legal issues regarding the documentation of grant money not reported by officials who were operating the former Adrian Manor nursing home some years back. At this juncture, the city may face some type of legal repercussion and Administrator Ryan Wescote is looking into the matter. An update is expected during the upcoming May 13 regular meeting.

Online bill paying is in the testing phase and soon residents will have the option to pay remotely. Wescote said that a new phone number will be associated with billing questions and that information will be revealed very soon.

TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) grant money is available to build new sidewalks with areas along First street and old business 71 at the focal point. As more money could become available, other areas around town will come under consideration as well.

Alderman Hummel reported that the city park is all set for Summertime events.  Ball diamonds and soccer fields are groomed and ready; construction is underway on the new volleyball court as well. The Adrian high school FFA is getting involved with the project as they will be manufacturing the poles and other necessary hardware to complete the project. It was also noted that the arena is in good condition and ready to for the Bates County Sheriff’s Office annual rodeo coming this Summer.

A discussion was held regarding replacement of aging storm warning sirens, at this moment all are functional with the exception of one located in the alley next to the First Baptist Church. The alderman with EMA director Ken Newsome discussed the possibility of better placement of new replacement sirens where they could be much more effective. For now, the subject was tabled until more information can be sought.

A decision was made to replace an aging John Deere tractor and mower. The new equipment will run $222,000 and with a trade in allowance on old equipment of $56,740 the city has money in the budget to cover the balance. The 38 year old tractor and 18 year old mower were beginning to ‘nickel and dime’ the city regarding repairs and the 56k trade in allowance cinched the deal.

The next big item on the agenda will be putting the final touches on the upcoming budget. Administrator Wescote noted that things look good so far and having solid information to work with from last year will enable extreme accuracy. At this juncture the initial budget will be presented in May, finalized in June and implemented beginning in July.

The Adrian board of alderman meet on the second Monday of the month, 7 pm at city hall. The public is highly encouraged to attend.
