Obituary - Colton James McCammon

Colton James McCammon entered the arms of Jesus on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the age of 21.

He was born on August 26, 2003, in Fort Scott, Kansas. His Spiritual birth was Sunday, April 6, 2014, at 11:16 am where he joined his brothers and sisters of Christ. Colton was a 2022 graduate of Prairie View High School where he had a very successful football career finishing with an All-State Linebacker recognition. He recently became a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101 Union with Haupt Construction. He was known there for “having a great attitude, being a hard worker and doing a great job”.

Colton had a love for the outdoors. Hunting and ranching were his passions. He has loved cows since he could walk. You didn’t need a written record of the cow’s history with Colton around. He could tell you what a cow’s cow had and tell you the ear tag that went with it. He was willing to do anything for the cows, from getting into a pond in 30-degree weather or getting in a hot tub with a calf or raising Norman his bottle calf. Colton’s other passion was hunting. Deer hunting and duck hunting were his favorites, and he was good at it. Once he spotted the deer that he wanted that year he was determined to get it. His family swears those deer would just come right out to him. However, he still had to make the shot, and he did.

Colton’s goofy sense of humor and giggle could make anyone smile. From his jokes to his dancing, you couldn’t help but laugh. Colton loved his niece and nephew fiercely. He loved playing with them and always talked about all the “uncle teachings” he was going to provide.

Colton is survived by his father Clint (Kendra) McCammon; mother Christy Harris; siblings: Pyper McCammon (Jeb); Ella McCammon; Brycen Gregg; Gradey Gregg; KayLyne Gregg; Charly Gregg; niece and nephew: Flora and Callahan; grandparents: James (Linda) McCammon; Gayle (Don) Semple; Teddi (LeRoy) Wisdom; Jerry Tarwater; great grandfather: John Payne; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

Funeral services were held March 24, 2025 at the Mound City First Baptist Church with burial in the Rockville Cemetery.

It is with sadness that I announce the death of my daughter, Meagan Kristine Whittlesey, at the age of 39.

Meagan was born July 6, 1985 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Roy James and Kerri Lynn Wisinger Whittlesey.  As a child and young lady she had a curious and adventurous heart.  Meagan loved to read, do art projects, work and volunteer at dog kennels.  She also loved to hike where she participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico on several occasions.  Later in life she participated in the Stitch Therapy Group at the local library and found the Faith Lutheran Church in Oberlin, Kansas.  Meagan said she finally found peace through her new found church family.  I am forever grateful for you all.  You gave her hope, peace and showed her love and for that I want to say “Thank you.”

Meagan is survived by her father, Jim Whittlesey and significant other Laurie Reno; two sisters, Ashley Moore and husband Michael and Brittany Bartley and husband Erick; and many extended family members and friends.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Kerri Whittlesey; and her two grandmothers, Heidi Ehm and Darlene Whittlesey; as well as many others.

Body found in Lousiburg pond likely Jordan Yust

The Miami County KS Sheriff's Office is saying that a body recovered in a rural Louisburg pond is likely Jordan Yust, an Olathe man who went missing on March 3rd.

Even as an extensive search was carried out in the weeks to follow, which included the Bates County Sheriff's posse and many others, the discovery was made yesterday evening and authorities say confirmation will be made following a forensic investigation but "It's highly likely Jordan Yust".

Yust left his Olathe home earlier this month intending to cause harm to himself, according to family members.

More will be posted as information becomes available from the Miami County Sheriff's Office.

8 more Quilts of Valor awarded

Richard Wyrick, Sam Stout, Jim Short and William Blackmore

It was a very special Veteran's breakfast presented by
Good Shepherd Hospice at Happy Hill Church in Butler on Friday as the staff of Rocking Chair Quilts presented 8 more Quilts of Valor to local veterans in honor of their service.

Rocking Chair Quilts owner Marsha Youngblood says the shop is "busy, busy" and this presentation brings the local total of QOV to 23 since the first quilt was given last August. With that, there are some 30 quilts in process with a long term goal of presenting 8-10 per month.

All labor is 100% donated and any businesses or individuals who would like to donate for supplies should contact Marsha directly at the shop on the east side of the Butler square or call 660-200-2226.

Likewise,  if you know a veteran you would like to nominate, please contact her as well.

Nationwide, the Quilts of Valor program has presented nearly 400,000 such quilts in their existence and more every day. The QOV program was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts whose son Nat was deployed in Iraq and more information can be found at https://www.qovf.org/
