Tailgate TV: Bears Baseball Secures First Win
The Butler Bears were still searching for their first W of the season as they loaded the buses and traveled to Sherwood to face off against the 2-9 Marksmen on Tuesday.
The Bears Bats were hot early as Butler jumped out to a large 6-0 lead in the first inning, kicked off by an 2 RBI double off the bat of Bryson Kash who drove a ball to center to field to score Hammett and Wilson. Shortly after, Eli Cox would get an RBI double himself that would score Kash. The extra base hits just kept coming for the Bears, as Rhett Newsome would also tally an RBI double in the inning, scoring Jackson.
The Bears however did not content after the 6 run inning, they were able to ad 1 more run in the 2nd, 5 more in the 3rd, and then 3 more in the 4th and 5th. The Bears would easily dispose of the Marksmen with a final of 15-1.
The Bears recorded 15 runs on 14 hits, showing the ability to not only provide solid contact, but also practicing some good plate discipline as they sent 8 to base on balls.
Offensively, the Bears were led by Eli Cox who went 4 of 5 on the night, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs. The Bears saw 7 batters record at least one hit in the contest, and 8 different Bears recorded an RBI.

MDC reports young hunters took 4,428 turkeys over youth weekend
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows young turkey hunters in Missouri harvested 4,428 birds over the past youth weekend, April 12-13. Top harvest counties were Osage with 107 birds harvested, Gasconade with 105, and Texas with 94.
Young hunters checked 3,721 birds during the 2024 spring youth weekend.
“Excellent turkey hunting weather and a large number of two-year-old gobblers on the landscape likely led to the 18% increase in youth harvest this year”, Oakley said. “This bodes well for another strong regular season next week.”
Oakley added that this spring’s harvest of 4,428 birds is the second highest harvest since the youth season began in 2001, behind only 2015 at 4,449 birds.
Get more harvest information by county at extra.mdc.mo.gov/widgets/harvest_table/.
The regular spring turkey season runs April 21 through May 11. For more information on spring turkey hunting in Missouri, visit mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/seasons/turkey-spring.
