Safety tips for space heaters

With temperatures and wind chills plummeting, make sure you're thinking about safety as you warm your home in the extreme cold!

-Space heaters cause 1/3 of home heating fires and 80 percent of home heating fire deaths.
-Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
-Never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home
-Make sure smoke alarms and CO alarms are working
-Never use a generator indoors!
-Never plug an electric heater into a power strip or extension cord

Baylor Brownsberger Named First 2026 C&S Graphics / State Farm Athlete of the Week

By  Cody Morris, Tailgate TV

Appleton City junior Baylor Brownsberger has been named the first C&S Graphics and Kellie Davidson State Farm Athlete of the Week for 2026. Brownsberger, nominated by head coach Travis Basore, has been a standout performer for the Lady Bulldogs.

“Baylor leads our team in scoring, typically averaging over 20 points per game,” Basore said. “She helped lead us to the Butler Tournament championship and a strong showing at the Walnut Grove Holiday Tournament, where she tied a tournament record with eight three-pointers. She’s a fierce competitor who makes everyone around her better and excels in the classroom, all while consistently putting in extra time in the gym to improve her game.”

Brownsberger spends roughly four hours in the gym on weekends during basketball season, taking about 800 shots per day. She credits her dedication to her early commitment to basketball in fifth grade and to role models such as her cousin Morgan Eye, who played at Mizzou.

“My dad pushed me to put in the work, and now my goal of playing post-high school keeps me motivated,” she said. “I also enjoy helping younger girls with basketball workouts, which keeps me in the gym and motivates me to be a good role model.”

Brownsberger said her favorite parts of the sport are the relationships she’s formed, the competitive nature of basketball, and the culture surrounding the game. Looking ahead, she said the Lady Bulldogs are focused on winning their conference and district and making a run to the state final four.

Each Athlete of the Week recipient is entered into a drawing for a $500 at the end of the year.

By Cody Morris, Tailgate TV

Adrian hosted the Ozark Highlands Conference Wrestling Tournament last week, and the event showcased strong performances from both Bates County programs, highlighted by a championship run from the Adrian girls and a runner-up finish by the Butler boys.

The Adrian girls claimed the OHC team championship, finishing with 154 points to secure the conference title on their home mats. Several wrestlers contributed to the title effort, led by conference champions Danika Keyton, Libby Nebocat, Tayler Essenpries, and Addie Davis. Nebocat and Essenpries each earned their second career conference championships. Adrian also saw multiple podium finishes, with Dallys Shaffer, Nyiomi Bradley, Kendall Bailey, Abygail Patterson, Jayden Murray, Macy Schipper, and Rona Shelton all earning second-team all-conference honors.

The Adrian boys competed well in a deep field, finishing sixth overall and placing multiple wrestlers, including Will Trotter, who earned third-team all-conference honors with a third-place finish.

Butler also turned in a strong showing at the conference meet. The Butler boys finished as OHC runner-ups, powered by three individual conference champions in Damian Alkire, Jarrett Blomquist, and Preston Mallatt. Butler added depth to its team score with third-place finishes from Bryce Bedwell, Dominick Cantrell, Hayden Dickens, Josiah Ferrell, Logan Fuller, Phineas Goertz, and Wyatt Miller, along with a fourth-place finish from Bentley Myers.

On the girls’ side, Butler placed fourth as a team. Karli Patrick led the way with a conference championship, while Addi Kuda and Brittany Mallatt each finished as runners-up. Additional podium finishes came from Alayna Alkire, Riley Bordelon, Brooke Conger, and Breanne Mallatt, who all placed third.

With strong team results and numerous individual placers, both Adrian and Butler represented Bates County well at the Ozark Highlands Conference Tournament.
