Obituary - Wilbur Alan Armstrong

Wilbur Alan Armstrong, 69, of LaCygne, Kansas died Friday, October 6, 2023 at his home. Wilbur was born May 19, 1954 to Harry Lee and Emma Darlene Hoaglan Armstrong in Fort Scott, Kansas. He spent his growing and adult years living in LaCygne, Kansas.

He graduated from Prairie View High School in 1972 and married Roselynn Grace Widner on June 16, 1973 in LaCygne. They had three children, Jeremy, Jennifer, and Jared.

In his early adult years, Wilbur worked at Stainbrook’s Wholesale until he started working for KCP&L in 1976. He worked at the LaCygne generating plant until his retirement in December 2018. During his years at KCP&L he went through their welder apprenticeship program and in later years served as a union representative in the program for young interns. He was a member of the IBEW.

Wilbur really enjoyed spending time with his kids. If we had to add up all the hours spent at the ball fields it would probably amount to a year or more.

The family also loved to go camping and fishing at Roaring River State Park. Wilbur was one of the top fishermen of the family. Those of his family still surviving include his children, Jeremy of Booneville, Missouri, Jennifer of Butler, Missouri, and Jared and wife Lindsey of Eudora, Kansas. Also surviving are his mother, Darlene Peek and sister Darla Armstrong, sister, Kathy Waldmer and husband Mike, brother, Dean Armstrong.

Wilbur also has step-sisters Judy Wilson and Betsy Dunkin, and Katie Fraizer, step-brothers Ed Peek and wife, Monica, Roger Peek and wife, Brenda, and John Sapp and wife Michelle.

FLASHBACK: LaCygne power plant goes on line

Some 46 years ago, something began appearing in the west...

And a short time later, the LaCygne Generating Station went on line, providing power for thousands of people throughout the midwest. As construction began, it was a regular 'outing' for local folks to drive over and marvel at the construction of something huge that appeared in a once empty field.

In conjunction with the plant was the P&M Coal mining operation that covered a large area basically between Amsterdam and Amoret; where coal was removed and trucked directly to the LaCygne power station, allowing the plant to be as 'self sustaining' as possible.

Both the plant and coal company provided many local jobs as well.

Over the years, P&M exhausted the local of supply of coal and it now comes by rail as seen regularly around Amsterdam every few days.

The LaCygne power plant recently went through renovations to meet the latest EPA emission guidelines, see more about those upgrades here.

Obituary - Jesse Dean Van Tuyl

JESSE DEAN VAN TUYL 31
La Cygne Kansas
11/25/1981 to 8/3/2013

Jesse was born in Shawnee Kansas on November 25, 1981. He was the son of the late Melvin Dennis Van Tuyl and Kelly Van Tuyl, currently
of La Cygne, Ks.

Jesse graduated high school with a GED, went to Johnson County Junior College and received his Associates Degree in Automotive Technology and later opened his own auto shop, J.V.''s Auto, in 2006. His passion was car stereos and the louder they were, the better! He loved tinkering with old cars and always'' had some project in the works. That was one of many things he and his Dad shared and spent many hours in the shop working side by side.
They were very close.

He used to be an avid bowler and won many awards. He wasn''t too bad at playing pool either! He enjoyed working with wood and was always'' drawing designs for things to build.

He had a very deep faith and was a proud member of the Calvary Baptist Church in LaCygne.

Jesse, like his father Dennis, was very easy going, loved people and was always'' helping whomever he could. He continued that even after his death by donating organs, which he strongly believed in. He saved two lives with his kidneys to individuals in New York. Jesse himself was a donor recipient at the age of 4 when his father donated his own bone marrow to save Jesse''s life. He also received a cornea so he wanted to pay it forward. If someday, those recipients get an urge to have a loud stereo system in their cars, we will know why! Jesse always'' kept a great attitude about life despite all the medical issues he had dealt with since birth and was still dealing with. He is now at peace with Dennis and all the family members that have gone before him. He is in God''s loving arms where we all want to be when we are called home.
Jesse was a very brave man and will be missed greatly by us all.

Funeral service will be 11 AM Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Calvary Baptist Church, LaCygne, Kansas. Burial in the East Mt. Zion Cemetery. Obituary - Rolleen Diann Stites

Rolleen Diann Stites, age 73, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Thursday July 4, 2024. She was born on August 12, 1950, in Parker, Kansas the daughter of Rolla Everett and Helen Alice McCarty Hampton.

Rolleen’s father passed away when she was a baby, leaving her mother to raise her and her four siblings on the farm outside of Parker. She met her lifelong friend Connie when she was only three, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Rolleen graduated from Parker High School in the spring of 1968. That same summer, she was united in marriage to Alvin Stites on June 14, 1968, at the Parker Methodist Church. Astute observers and the numerically adept will notice that she was not yet 18, and so Helen had to sign off on the marriage license.

Before they had been married a year, Alvin was drafted into the army and sent to Vietnam. The two had been living in Red Oak, Iowa, where Alvin’s parents were then living. While Alvin was in the army and Vietnam, Rolleen lived with her sister Marilyn and Marilyn’s husband in Independence. She worked in an office in downtown Kansas City for an insurance company.

When Alvin returned from Vietnam, the two lived at Fort Riley while Alvin finished his army service. They then moved to LaCygne and built their permanent home on land owned by Alvin’s grandfather and, in a poetic twist of fate, had been originally homesteaded by Rolleen’s great-great grandparents McCarty. After moving home to LaCygne, Rolleen initially worked as a bookkeeper for the Linn County Co-Op in LaCygne.

She continued working there until Rex started school. After that, she worked from home, keeping books for Rural Water District #3. Rolleen was an avid reader; she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and cross stitch. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She served for many years on the Parker Alumni Board. Family was always the most important thing to Rolleen. She could spend hours talking to her family—especially her sisters, Marilyn and Cheryl, and her “sisters” Connie and Naomi—whether in person or on the phone. She organized and hosted large family holiday dinners for both her and Alvin’s families. When nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews were born, she loved to make hand-made gifts for the new babies.

Rolleen was preceded in death by her biological father and mother. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Charles O. Haverfield; a brother, Philip A. Hampton, and a sister, Cheryl P. Erwin. Rolleen is survived by her husband, Alvin, a son, Rex Stites, a brother, Charles M. Hampton and wife Virginia, a sister, Marilyn J. Sheets-Rhoades, and three step-brothers, Charles L. Haverfield and wife Linda, Robert Haverfield and wife Sheila, and Steven Haverfield and wife Rose.

Funeral service will be 2 pm Monday, July 8, 2024, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Burial will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 pm Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the La Cygne Chapel. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Parker Community Historical Society. Online condolences can be left atwww.schneiderfunerals.com.

Upgrades nearing completion at LaCygne power plant

Unit 2, seen at left, on a 'test run' last Sunday -photo courtesy Bruce Furman
There's been something new on the horizon for awhile and it's about to come to life.

A new stack at the LaCygne power plant is part of major upgrades designed to meet the latest emission standards. The project included the installation of two Hitachi wet FGD scrubbers and new Hamon fabric filters on Unit 1 and Unit 2; and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, low-NOx burners and over-fire air system on Unit 2 of the facility.

When completed, the La Cygne units will be two of the cleanest coal-fired generating stations in the country with SO2 emissions removal efficiency of over 98 percent and NOx emissions on Unit 2 of 0.05 lb/MBtu. Over 2.5 million manhours will be expended in the construction of the project.

According to SourceWatch.org, the LaCygne plant previously had been listed as the 16th most polluting U.S. plant based on coal waste.

All work is slated to be complete this year.

Kansas Police chase ends in Bates County

At Approximately 1:00 AM on 5/24/2024 while conducting Special Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P)LaCygne Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of 4th Street and Market Street for a minor traffic violation.

The suspect vehicle fled eastbound recklessly through the city at a high rate of speed disregarding the safety of the residents of LaCygne. The suspect vehicle fled toward Bates County, MO on K152 and onto E 2200 Rd in eastern Linn County.

Bates County Deputies were notified that Kansas Officers were in pursuit of a GMC pickup truck entering their county. The suspect vehicle traveled through Amsterdam and headed south toward Amoret; continuing onto Y Highway and turned onto 4002.

The vehicle attempted to turn onto State Line Road before leaving the roadway and through a fence; becoming immobile. The occupant, later identified as Ryan Templeton, 43 fled on foot from the vehicle. Officers set up a perimeter until Bates County Deputies arrived on scene. Prior to a K9 arriving on scene a Deputy deployed a drone and located subject in the woods lying in a creek bed. The drone was able to guide K9 Falco (BCSO) and officers to the subject where he was taken into custody by Falco and held in place until officers could assist.

Templeton was taken to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries from Falco. The truck was found to be stolen along with the license plate on the vehicle and another plate inside the vehicle. Templeton has a very extensive criminal history with multiple priors for tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. Templeton had posted bond on an unrelated warrant earlier in the day.

Templeton has been charged in Bates County with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and property damage in Bates County. Bond was set at $20,000 cash only. Templeton has additional charges through LaCygne Police Department that will be filed through district court after a thorough investigation. Interim Chief Haley says, "I am very proud of my officers for the way the way they handled this incident.

We have received a lot of grief from the public for working extra hours on the streets and conducting more traffic stops than usual. We aim to target unrestrained drivers/passengers and DUI activity, but if we run into something else in the process, we will handle it accordingly. This is what happens when you run from the police! We will pursue you and take you into custody with the tools we have available; including a K9 and a drone!

I appreciate Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson and his Deputies assisting with our event and the investigation. They have always been there when we have needed them without question whether it is on our side of the line or theirs. Their professionalism is unmatched and have helped on numerous cases in the past they don't receive credit for."
