Faulty Relay Switch Causes Power Problems Sunday Night In South Harrisonville

Residents in the south part of Harrisonville, particularly the area on either side of South Street, may have noticed their lights flickering Sunday night, the result of a series of power interruptions plaguing the city’s electric system.

Electric utility employees spent about four hours Sunday night, isolating the problem and correcting it. The culprit was found to be a faulty mechanical relay switch located in the South substation. Workers were able to re-route the power supply around the relay to eliminate the power interruptions and, on Monday, replaced the switch, restoring the system to normal operation.

“This is not a common problem,” said city administrator Mike Tholen, “but we had the necessary replacement part on hand and were able to make repairs in a timely manner.”

The city apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the power interruptions Sunday night.
