Obituary - Dawn Mar­vel Gwin

Dawn Mar­vel Gwin, a res­i­dent of Dothan, Al­abama passed away on Mon­day, Au­gust 7, 2017. He was 74.
(Visitation was held Fri­day, Au­gust 11, 2017 at Sun­set Fu­neral Home in Midland, Alabama.)

Graveside ser­vices with Mil­i­tary Hon­ors will be held on Sat­ur­day, Sep­tem­ber 2, 2017 at 2 pm in Ap­ple­ton City Ceme­tery in Ap­ple­ton City, MO. Those unable to attend and who would like to sign the register book for Mr. Gwin may do so at Hill & Son Funeral Home in Appleton City.

In lieu of flow­ers, memo­r­ial do­na­tions may be made to the Shriner's Hos­pi­tals for Chil­dren, Of­fice of De­vel­op­ment, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607. Donations may be left at Hill & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Gwin was born on Au­gust 29, 1942 in Ap­ple­ton City, Mis­souri and spent the early part of his life there. He was a 1960 grad­u­ate of Ap­ple­ton City High School and joined the Air Force on Jan­u­ary 3, 1961 where he was sta­tioned in Ger­many. Fol­low­ing his mil­i­tary ca­reer, he worked with the Birm­ing­ham Po­lice De­part­ment as a pa­trol­man then with the Jef­fer­son County Sher­if­f’s De­part­ment as a he­li­copter pi­lot. In 1978, he moved to the Wire­grass area and was em­ployed at Fort Rucker as an in­struc­tor pi­lot un­til his re­tire­ment in 1996. Mr. Gwin then moved to Mo­bile where he was em­ployed as a man­ager and sales­man with Su­pe­rior Metal Prod­ucts. He moved back to Dothan in 2005 where he was em­ployed with Lib­erty Na­tional as a re­cruiter un­til his sub­se­quent re­tire­ment. 


He was a mem­ber of the Shriner's and the Pales­tine Mis­sion­ary Bap­tist Church in Mo­bile. He en­joyed play­ing golf and was an avid Al­abama Foot­ball fan.

Mr. Gwin was pre­ceded in death by his par­ents, Dawn For­est and Vir­ginia Faye Gwin; a brother, Ben Burk; a sis­ter, Patty Burk; and a son Steven Gwin. 

Sur­vivors in­clude his wife, Jo Gwin; his chil­dren, Scott (Sil­via) Gwin and Leslie (Chris) Payne; step-chil­dren, Julie Page (Barry Hig­gins) and Gary Schlie; grand­chil­dren, Sean Gwin, Trevor Gwin, Tay­lor Gwin, Noah Gwin, Cameron Payne, Colton Payne, Ash­ton Payne, Dal­ton Schlie and Amanda Page; and great grand­child, Sky­lar Gwin; brother Michael Dale Gwin (Shirley); and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
