Fight in the Barton County Jail

On 12-23-2017 a fight was investigated in the Barton County jail by deputies of the Sheriff's Office. At approximately 1:30pm the on duty Jailer Chase Mcclane went upstairs to do a routine check of the inmates. When he got upstairs he could hear an actual physical altercation going on with two men yelling at each other. Jailer Mcclane called for assistance to come and open up the cell block upstairs to deal with the subjects.

Deputies arrived upstairs and was able to get the two parties separated. One of two parties sustained serve enough injuries to be transported to the hospital for medical treatment. During the interviews with witnesses in the same jail cell it was stated that they did not see anything and that the inmate must have fallen down.  The inmate which was transported for medical assistance denied wanting to file criminal charges against the suspect nor did he want to file a report or make a statement. The parties that we believed was involved with the argument and fight was Carl Dale Carter, and Jerry L. Rowell the two were separated and put in different cell blocks. Rowell was asked for his permission to put the picture of the injury he sustained in the media release and he granted permission too share the information.

In 2017 we had a record number of inmates being transported out of the county to be housed in other jurisdictions due to all kinds of reasons, but the biggest is the lack of space or ability to segregate certain inmates from others.

We really try to keep from having these kinds of issues from happening, but as you all know we do run a jail and these things happen. When they do happen though they cost time and money in dealing with.

In this event we had to call in off duty personnel to go with the inmate to the hospital for medical treatment as well as to deal with the current inmates at the Sheriff's Office.

Belton says aloha to new Hawaiian-themed restaurant

Two brothers are leveraging their experience with Oregon-based restaurant chain Hawaiian Time to launch a similar concept in the Kansas City metro.

The first Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is slated to open in February at 1112 E. North Ave. in Belton, which will feature Hawaiian-inspired décor and signature items, such as a teriyaki chicken dish called Huli Huli Chicken. Brothers Cameron and Tyler McNie already are searching for additional locations and plan to open as many as a dozen restaurants in the Kansas City metro.

For the Belton location, the McNie brothers teamed up with longtime friends Paul Worcester and Joel Worcester, also brothers, who own Kansas City apartment community investment owner/operator Worcester Investments LLCto buy a 2,800-square-foot space that formerly housed a Long John Silver's.

"This is a very similar yet different concept than Hawaiian Time. We have rebranded the look and feel to be our own as well as added some new takes on the menu while keeping the core of the traditional plate lunch intact," Cameron McNie said in a release. "We've been doing this for 14 years and think we have a good idea of what works."

McNie said the Belton area was attractive for several reasons, including a growing population, the success of area businesses and access to a stand-alone building.

"We feel our food and price point will be appealing to a wide demographic, allowing us to be successful wherever we are located. We believe the Midwest is ready for Hawaiian plate lunch."

Alleged Cop Killer Waives preliminary hearing today in Henry County

Before he was charged with murder in the shooting of a Clinton police officer, 39-year-old Ian James McCarthy lived a largely solitary life marked with long periods of unemployment, run-ins with the law and violence.

When Officer Gary Michael pulled McCarthy over about 10:45 p.m. Aug 6th, McCarthy had warrants out for his arrest on weapons offenses — one in neighboring Johnson County and one in New Hampshire, where McCarthy spent most of his adult life, according to court records. At age 23, McCarthy had been convicted in a stabbing there.

In recent years, McCarthy never seemed to have a job, according to acquaintances in Clinton, passing his time playing video games, hunting and fishing, and collecting monthly payments from a trust fund.

Neighbors said they were surprised — but not shocked — in Aug. when authorities accused McCarthy of shooting Michael to death during the Sunday night traffic stop, touching off a two-day manhunt that ended with McCarthy’s arrest. They described a man with few friends, no apparent vocation and a temper.

McCarthy was scheduled for a preliminary hearing today but that was waived by the defendant. McCarthy is now set for arraignment in circuit court on Jan. 22nd.

While McCarthy mostly stayed off of law enforcement’s radar in Clinton, he had been arrested numerous times in New Hampshire, on charges of robbery and assault, along with traffic offenses. A 2011 warrant for his arrest on a weapons charge and other offenses was still active when he became a murder suspect in Clinton.

In 2001, a jury convicted McCarthy of stabbing a young man during a brawl in Manchester, N.H., leaving the victim with severe injuries to his neck, chest and stomach.

More recently, a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper reportedly found McCarthy with a .45-caliber Glock handgun in his waistband during a July 2015 traffic stop in Johnson County, Mo. As a felon, he would be committing a felony by carrying a firearm.

The trooper found McCarthy’s New Hampshire arrest warrants, but they didn’t require him to be extradited, according to court records.

In his report, the trooper noted McCarthy’s bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, writing that McCarthy told of spending time in prison in New Hampshire for the stabbing.

Johnson County prosecutors charged McCarthy with being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felony, and the court issued a warrant for his arrest in December 2015.

The warrant was still on the court docket when, police say, Officer Michael pulled McCarthy over for a registration violation and the shooting started.

After two days of searching, law enforcement officers found a wounded McCarthy walking along a highway near Truman Lake, about 16 miles from Clinton. He had been shot, according to the patrol.

Troopers arrested McCarthy, taking him first to a Kansas City hospital and then to the Henry County jail in Clinton.

Anyone missing a stock trailer?

On 12-21-2017 Barton County Deputy McManis was dispatched to 160th LN and NW 60th RD for a stock trailer parked on the edge of the roadway.

A individual had called in about the trailer and was concerned that somebody might strike it or that it had been stolen and left at that location.

The trailer appeared to have come unhooked from a vehicle as it was heading south bound across the railroad tracks. The trailer appeared to have been located at that location for quite awhile before it was reported.

The trailer had a license plate on the back of the trailer which checked to a couple out of Liberal, however we have not been able to get a hold of the register owner. The trailer is a dual axle bumper hitch stock trailer.

There were misc. Items of value inside the trailer. A tow truck was called to remove the trailer from the roadway due to the concerns listed above and we didn't want somebody to steal it. We are going to continue to try and get a hold of the registered owner to reunite him with his property.
