Verna attended the Durham School and worked at the Nevada City Hospital as a nurses aid from 1947-1954. On September 12, 1966 Verna and John began as caretakers of the Stultz Lake Hunting and Fishing Club which they continued to do for many years.
Survivors include two sons, William W. Polk and his wife Maxine of Ft. Scott, KS and Lonnie A. Polk and his wife Maxine of Nevada, eight grand-children, 15 great grandchildren, one great, great grand-child, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Verna was preceded in death by three sisters, Ocia Crowe, Mattie Jane Horn, and Patsy Patrick, two brothers, Silas J. Austin, Jr and Bill J. Austin.
A private family committal will be held at Moore Cemetery on Monday January 22, 2018
