Obituary - Timothy J. Hughes

Timothy J. Hughes, age 70, of Belton, MO died on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Carnegie Village Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Belton,MO. 

Mr. Hughes was born in Bentonville, AR on Monday, May 30, 1949. He was the son of Kenneth and Bernice (Kelly) Hughes. Mr. Hughes married Kay Strong on Sunday, August 13, 1972 in Wentworth, MO and she survives. Mr. Hughes started teaching in 1987 with Metropolitan Community Colleges in the Kansas City area. He retired from Belton High School where he taught from 2000-2012. He started the high school news cast at Belton and was the speech and debate coach. Mr. Hughes was the first teacher, at Belton, to take the debate team to nationals. He was District Teacher of the Year in 2004. 

He enjoyed gardening and Kansas City sports. He was an avid Royals fan and a big movie buff. Mr. Hughes also earned the honor of Eagle Scout. He always enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are the following: his wife, Kay of Belton, MO; two sons, Jamie Hughes of Milo, MO and Stephen Hughes of Belton, MO; one daughter, Rebecca Aciego from Peculiar, MO; one sister, Jeanie Close of Raytown, MO; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, MO on Friday, January 17, 2020 from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Graveside services will be at Van Buren Cemetery in Wentworth, MO on Friday, January 17, 2020 beginning at 2:30 PM with Brother Deny LeMaster officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, MO.

On Sunday, January 26, 2020, the family will hold a celebration of life at Centerview, 227 Municipal Circle, Raymore, MO from 1 - 4 p.m.
