Archie Whirlwinds take down Drexel Bobcats

The Archie Whirlwinds (6-0) got a little revenge Friday night as they ended a 25 game win streak by defeating the Drexel Bobcats (5-1) 52-14.

Drexel had won the last 4 match-ups against Archie including 2 victories in the playoffs.

These two teams are merely 18 miles away from each other and most likely will meet again later on this season in the playoffs.

Way to go Whirlwinds.

State Farm Student Athlete of the Week

We are very happy to announce this week’s State Farm Student Athlete of the week junior, Briar McIntire from Archie. Briar plays on the Whirlwinds varsity football team. He was nominated by his Head Coach Drew Smith.

Coach Smith nominated Briar because “he is constantly looking to better himself on the football field and works extremely hard in the weight room. He has been a leader for our team all year and represents himself well both on and off the football field. Briar is also our team captain and is currently sitting with a 4.0 GPA.”

Currently the Whirlwinds are 5-0. When we asked Briar why he likes being apart of a team sport he stated, “being apart of a team feels like you are apart of a family.” We then asked him what he feels is the toughest aspect of being an athlete, “I feel like balancing school and practice is the hardest thing. Many days I have homework and then have a game or practice." When we asked him what makes him so passionate about athletics, he told us, “a big part of it is I have a drive to not fail. I've been doing it since I was little and just strive to be the best athlete I can." The last thing we asked Briar was what sets apart an elite athlete.

Briar believes, "being an elite athlete is all about the off season. It is the most important time and this is where you become the athlete you strive for. It's about the hard work you put into it." It was such a pleasure talking to Briar. We wish him and the Whirlwinds the best of luck this season! They have a big game tonight against Drexel.

After attending SBU and playing baseball for 2 years, Will finished his degree in Criminal Justice at State Fair Community College. He was hired as a State Employee at the new 30th Circuit Youth Services Center in Bolivar when it was opened and was Shift Supervisor until it closed. Will then went to work at Green Gables Youth Facility in Macks Creek until it closed and then he went to Mary E. Dickerson Juvenile Detention Center in Camdenton until he had a stroke in 2020 while in surgery to remove a grade IV glioblastoma brain tumor.

Will was saved when he was 28 years old at a revival at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church north of Wheatland. He joined the church and was baptized in the Pomme De Terre River at Sapps Landing. Will was ordained as a deacon at Macedonia May 2018. He was blessed to see all 3 of his children saved at Macedonia and join the church and baptized in the river.

David (or Doc) as he was known by many attended grade school in several of the country schools in Bourbon County, Ft. Scott Junior High, and High School. He graduated from Kansas City College and Bible School in Overland Park, KS in 1957. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy where he spent the next five years stationed on the U.S.S. El Dorado.

Having accepted Christ as his Savior at the tender age of four, and a call to preach at twelve, upon his return from the Navy, he began to prepare by returning to Kansas City College and Bible School. With time out to pastor several churches, working with as well as starting a mission in the slums of Kansas City, MO, he did not graduate until 1971 with a Bachelor of Missions degree. Immediately following that, he and his wife moved to Salem, OH, where he attended Aldersgate School of Religion, obtaining a Master of Arts degree in May of 1972. During the following years, he continued working in the evangelistic field and teaching in several schools.

When communism fell and the country of Albania was opened to missionaries, he was there presenting the plan of Salvation to a people who did not even acknowledge the very existence of God. He helped establish several churches there over the next fourteen years.

After many years of living in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, California, Arizona, and Ohio, they returned to the Ft. Scott area where they lived until his death. During this time, he continued to evangelize, and in the later years, was quite successful in a 1:1 ministry. As a sideline, he raised cattle and horses, and farmed.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; two brothers, Nathan (Kathleen) Wolf, Etter, TX, and Garen (Sheila), Cincinnati, OH; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. MDC warns of campfire safety

As cooler temperatures arrive, many people enjoy a nice campfire. If you are going to have a campfire, remember to extinguish it before you leave.

Unattended campfires can quickly get out of hand in dry conditions, turning into a damaging wildfire. This fire was left unattended next to a large, wooded tract of timber at an Missouri Department of Conservation area.

The local agent responded and extinguished the fire before it could have spread into the nearby timber.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather at a local conservation area and remember to extinguish all campfires before leaving them.
