Herrman’s Historical Happenings week of January 25

1907 Hume holds the first annual Chicken Show.

1910 The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture declares there is no Osage River in Bates Co. The Marais des Cygne and Little Osage unite south of the county line.

1916 “Jay Goriniers barbers not give the best haircuts, shaves, shampoos & baths, but give good music as well” as patrons are serenaded by the barbers. South side of the Butler square.

1922 At this time there are over 30 producing gas wells in Bates Co, the largest number in any county in Missouri.

1938 Melvin Rice, Butler implement dealer is named president of the Butler Chamber of Commerce.

1941 Butler Mayor H. L. Oberweather announces the new reservoir, west of town is full. It took four years to fill.

1944 The Drexel Star newspaper reports the Damon Shannon farm is enjoying a new Delco light system, installed by the Ward Electric Co of Amsterdam.

1973 Charles Thomure, publisher of the Bates County Shopper and Headliner newspaper announces plans to extend offices at 112 W. Dakota st. for a photo lab and larger composing facilities. Butler.

2001 The Harlem All-Stars basketball team appears at the Miami R-1 school, to a packed house led by Captain Magic, the Clown Prince of Basketball.
