Butler Bears Baseball gets district win tonight against Sherwood

Butler Sophomore Jake Chandler collected three hits in four at bats, as the Bears defeated the Sherwood Marksmen 14-2 on Friday in the first round of district play in Holden.

Chandler tripled in the fourth inning, singled in the first inning, and singled in the third inning. Sherwood got on the board in the top of the first inning after Butler committed an error, and Wade Green lined out, each scoring one run.

Butler took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Sherwood Marksmen committed an error, Brandon Hammett singled, and Breydan Heckadon singled, each scoring one run.

Butler Varsity Bears scored five runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Layson Wiedenmann induced Hammett to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, Sophomore Bryson Kash was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Heckadon grounded out, scoring one run, and Cohen Wilson singled, scoring two runs. 

The Bears added one run in the third after Kash grounded out. Butler Varsity Bears scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Senior Cameron Anderson drew a walk, scoring one run, Chandler tripled, scoring three runs, and Chandler scored after tagging up. Junior Eli Cox earned the win for The Bears. 

The righty gave up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out four and walking one. Senior Maddox Fennewald started the game for the Bears. They gave up one hit and two runs (zero earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking none. Wiedenmann started the game for Sherwood.

The right-handed pitcher surrendered five hits and eight runs (six earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking none. Butler tallied nine hits in the game. 

Hammett and Wilson each collected multiple hits for the Bears. Anderson paced Butler with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting six walks for the game. Chandler stole two bases. Butler stole five bases in the game. 

The Bears turned one double play in the game. Shane Brownfield led Sherwood Marksmen with two hits in three at bats from the leadoff position.

The Butler Bears Baseball team will now move on to play the Lone Jack Mules on Monday at 6:15 p.m. in Holden.
