Tornado hits Sedalia; funnel cloud spotted near Harrisonville

with glass and debris when he looked out a window and  barely made

 it to the safety of his bathroom. His home, in background, he said,

As predicted, today's weather was quite active, as a tornado ripped through Sedalia, destroying several homes. No deaths have been reported but about 15 people were treated for injuries.
A tornado was also spotted on the ground near Louisburg, Ks. following a path nearly northbound along 69 highway. Damage in the area is still being assessed at this time.

Funnel cloud near Harrisonville today

A Facebook photo shows a funnel cloud spotted near Harrisonville this afternoon. No damage from this storm is being reported. It is believed the funnel cloud did not make contact with the ground, making it a full blown tornado. Nationwide, tornadoes and storms claimed 15 lives today- and again, we in Bates County 'dodged the bullet' for now.
The storms today were part of a 'wrap around' system that traveled in a circular pattern, with some returning to the same place for a second round of damages. Current radar shows the storm system to still be active, however at this time is dissipating.
Another round of storms, some possibly severe, are forecast to move in sometime around midnight tonight. An updated forecast will be posted in a few hours.

Call system activated to locate hospitalized victims of the Joplin tornadoes

The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross has activated the Patient Locator Program in conjunction with the regional hospitals. Persons seeking a loved one from the Joplin area who may have been transported to a Kansas City area hospital may call this number to determine where that person is
currently hospitalized. Operators will search a database of information supplied by the hospitals identifying patients admitted in relation to the tornadoes that occurred in Joplin. Callers will be instructed what hospital to call and what procedures to follow.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 6 p.m. this evening.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect

Bates County has been placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Warming in effect until 10:30 p.m.

Boot block planned for Joplin victims

Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney announced this evening that the Adrian Fire Department, in cooperation with neighboring fire departments, will be sponsoring a boot block at the intersection of 18 and 71 highways in Adrian this Friday and Saturday.
All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army and directed to aid those hit hardest by the Joplin tornado last Sunday.
