Eating From The Garden Comes to Poplar Heights Farm

Sign up now to participate in Eating From the Garden to be held at Poplar Heights Living History Farm in Bates County, Missouri. Fourth and Fifth graders will plant their own garden at the Farm, care for it, harvest the produce and eat what they have grown while getting hands on learning about plant science and nutrition.

This unique class starts March 23 when young gardeners will plant sugar snap peas, radishes, potatoes and radishes. Fourteen classes stretch through October 19th. A nutritionist from the University of Missouri Extension will be at each class to introduce the gardeners to basic food safety, habits for healthy eating, understanding plant science and how gardens and people fit into the natural environment.

Gardeners will taste a variety of vegetables and fruits, cook their own snacks and learn the differences between eating as a pioneer settler and today's fast food climate. Classes are on Saturday mornings during the school year and Wednesday mornings during the summer and will last about 2 hours. Eating From the Garden participants will also have a special booth at
Taste - The Flavors of Yesterday event, September 7, at Poplar Heights Farm to show off their garden.

Gardeners will also be able to bring home plants they have started from seed if their family wants to start their own garden. A special gardening class for the adults, taught by a Missouri Master Gardener, will be held April 13 while the Eating From the Garden class is going on.

The program is free to all participants who must in the third, fourth or fifth grade in school. Class size is limited.   Pre-registration and a commitment to complete the program is required. Registration forms and a complete schedule can be found on the Farm's website:www.poplarheightsfarm.org (click on Events); by emailing to: info@poplarheightsfarm.org; or telephone their office at 660-679-0764.
