Vernon County Sheriff's Office Press Release: Another Arrest In Richards

Photo: Another arrest was made in Richards today after a foot pursuit with Sheriffs Deputies. Jonathan Howard was wanted for a felony warrant of fraudulent use of a credit card, and a misdemeanor warrant for receiving stolen property. Howard took off on foot into a field when he saw the Sheriff's Vehicles pulling up. Howard ran into some woods but was found hiding in some bushes about an hour later. Howard is being held in the Vernon County Jail with no bond.

Vernon County sheriff Jason Mosher Monday announced the second arrest of a fugitive in recent days at an undisclosed address in the Richards area. The sheriff identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jonathan S. Howard on warrants alleging the fraudulent use of a credit/debit device and receiving stolen property. Mosher said officers saw Howard in the backyard of a residence when they arrived and he ran into some nearby woods. More deputies were called to the scene and found the fugitive's hiding place about an hour later. The sheriff also said officers found what they believe to be methamphetamines near where Howard was standing when they arrived and he was booked at the county jail in Nevada on a no-bond warrant with additional charges possible.

Adrian Optimist Students Of The Month

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Selection is based on the criteria, but a student stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.

The Miami student for September is David Weaver. David, a senior, is the son of Ron Brown and Mechelle Weaver. He is relatively new to Miami, but really enjoys the school, especially FFA. David is also active in Boy Scouts of America. Miss Hoog, teacher at Miami, states that David has been a wonderful addition to our school this year. In his short time here his positive attitude, kind heart, and respectful manor has stood out and been appreciated by both students and faculty. He is a very bright and hardworking young man with potential for a very successful future. David is looking for the right college at which to earn a degree in business management.

The Ballard Student of the Month is Patryk Sickels, senior son of Charles and Sheryl Sickels. Social Studies instructor and Pep Club coordinator, Kate Bell, states that “Patryk was elected President of the Pep Club and helped make sure that the Pep Club has gotten off to a good start. He helped make the great looking banner for the Lady Bulldog volleyball players. He is hard working, courteous and always willing to help. Boys Basketball Coach, Troy Engelhart, adds “Patryk has stepped up as a leader. His strong work ethic and attitude have him leading by example and his teammates have responded by ‘upping’ their game/intensity to match (his). He wants to be the first one in the gym and is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

The Adrian student this month is freshman Riley Zalis. Riley is the daughter of Sara Vick and Jeff Vick, and this is her first year at Adrian. Her activities in school include FFA and FBLA. Adrian staff say Riley is their sure selection for this honor. Riley has a saying which is dear to her: “courage doesn’t always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying I’ll try again tomorrow”. Her plans for the future include a medical degree from University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Operations Suspended

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Suspends Operations in Missouri Due to Federal Government Lapse in Appropriations

Due to a lapse in appropriations that has caused a federal government shutdown, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facilities and lands are now closed to the public and public use activities have been suspended nationwide. This includes all National Wildlife Refuges, Waterfowl Production Areas, National Fish Hatcheries, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Offices and Ecological Services Offices.

In Missouri the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has closed nine national wildlife refuges, one ecological services office, one national fish hatchery and one fish and wildlife coordination office totaling more than 61,000 acres of land.

Squaw Creek, Swan Lake, Great River, Clarence Cannon, Big Muddy, Middle Mississippi, Pilot Knob, Mingo and Ozark Cavefish national wildlife refuges and Neosho National Fish Hatchery are all now closed to public access and any events scheduled at these facilities have been cancelled.  In addition, the Columbia Fish and Wildlife Coordination Office, Ecological Services Office and Private Lands Office are also closed.

Wildlife-related recreational activities on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands, such as hunting, fishing, environmental education or other public events scheduled at any of these facilities are cancelled.

We are asking the public to delay their plans to visit any of these locations until U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands and facilities are re-opened.

In the Midwest Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which covers the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin, more than 800 employees have been placed in unpaid furlough status and 55 national wildlife refuges, 12 wetland management districts, six national fish hatcheries and more than 1.2 million acres of federal public lands are closed.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. We are both a leader and trusted partner in fish and wildlife conservation, known for our scientific excellence, stewardship of lands and natural resources, dedicated professionals, and commitment to public service.
