What a wonderful life! This is what Lillie Helen Roth Hatten titled her autobiography. What a wonderful gift it was to leave her family this written account of a life well lived. She passed away on Dec. 9th surrounded by loved ones and their spirits.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio to Mary Krebs Roth and John Henry Roth. She was one of six children had an idyllic childhood surrounded by extended family that nurtured and cared for her family after her father passed away in 1927, leaving her mother a widow with 6 children, ages 9 months to 10 years. Can you imagine? Thus began a legacy of strong women. There was sledding, hot chocolate, Sunday school, and even though it was the Depression there was always food on the table at 900 Kirby Avenue.

She met her future husband on a troop train and married Robert G. Hatten on March 9, 1944. All the brothers and husbands arrived home from the war safely and what a celebration that first Christmas was, with everyone living together in the big old house. After Bob’s service as a Paratrooper in the Philippines, they moved to Missouri where Bob attended Cleveland Chiropractic College and Lillie worked at a law firm in downtown KC. They moved into an apartment at the Butler airport after Bob’s graduation with their two week old son, Robert Lynn. Can you imagine? Life was busy in their new community and when the second child, Marianna came along in 1950 and they moved to a house in town on Harrison St. Martha arrived in 1953 and the family was complete. Lillie had a busy, happy life filled with friends, children and their activities, taking all three children to dance, church camp, making real Halloween costumes, reading to and with her kids.

Lillie served her community in many ways, including the Library Board, American Legion Auxiliary, PTA, Cub Scout pack leader, champion of the Foodtown Little League baseball team, and the proud steward of Lillie’s Little Free Library, established in 2014 for her 90th birthday. She was a member of the Butler Presbyterian Church, and a 60+ year member of Chapter HV, P.E.O., having been initiated at the Missouri State Convention. She loved to play bridge, entertain, fish, golf, and travel with the Ararat Shrine family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob of 68 years, son Rob, two brothers Robert and John Roth and sister Mary Riggs. She is survived by two daughters, Marianna Hatten (Dr. Judith Jenkins) of Cerrillos, NM and Martha (Larry) Bledsoe of Nevada, MO. Grandchildren Tyler Thornton, Abrielle Flavin (Mike), Beth Jump, and Chris Hatten (Ali), Alex Ruthmann (Anne) and Nick Ruthmann. Great grandchildren Shelby Henderson, Seraphim Jump, Amelia and Norah Hatten, and Knox Hatten Flavin along with daughter-in-law Sally Hatten. Her brother Walter Roth (Marilyn) and her sister Anna Jones, along with nieces and nephews from FL to CA and many points in between.

Lillie was thought of as Mom to many friends of Rob, Marianna, and Martha, Grammy to her own grandchildren and many of their friends, and within the past several years as Gigi to her beloved great grandchildren. What a wonderful life it was, Lillie. Thank you for being so strong and such an inspirational example to so many.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the First Christian Church, Harrisonville, MO with visitation from 9:00-10:00. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Week of Compassion by writing a check to First Christian Church, Harrisonville, MO and putting “Bill Maxon—Week of Compassion” in the memo line.

Bill was born September 14, 1934, the son of William Calvin and Myrtle (Rice) Maxon. He grew up in Kingfisher, OK. On August 3, 1958, he was married to Mabel Tarpey in Stillwater, OK. They made their home in Kingfisher, OK, Hazel Green, KY, Dos Palos, CA, Kansas City, Independence, and Harrisonville, MO before moving to their farm in rural Peculiar, MO in 1971.

Bill’s first job was helping his brother Bob in the wheat harvest. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in agriculture. After college, he served as a Church World Service Team Member in Greece, helping to improve agriculture in the war-torn country. After returning to the states he taught multiple science subjects at Hazel Green Academy in Hazel Green, KY and was supervisor in the boys’ dorm. He served in migrant ministry in California, then moved to Missouri to work with the University of Missouri Extension Service. While working there, he obtained a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. After retiring from Extension in 1984, he continued to work various jobs, including at D&I Wood Products, Freeman Water District #7 as meter reader and plant operator, and Adessa Wholesale Car Lot in Lee’s Summit where he got to “play” with many models of cars.

Bill was a man of wisdom and service. He was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Harrisonville, Missouri, where he sang in the choir for many years, was choir director in the 70s, and was an active participant in the outreach of the church. Bill loved everything about cars. He loved to drive them, look at them, work on them, and talk about them. He had a brilliant mind and enjoyed exercising it by solving the puzzles on “Car Talk,” learning new things, tackling hard questions, and teaching others. He also loved to listen to and talk about classical music, reminisce about the years he lived in Greece, make pancakes for his grandkids, sing, eat ice cream, and go “camping” in the sparsest of trailers and the wildest of places. Most of all, he loved his wife, of whom he said, “she’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Myrtle Maxon, and his siblings, Mildred, Bob, and Don. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Maxon of Peculiar; two children, Sophia Smither and her husband, Richard of Harrisonville, and William Maxon and his wife, Chellie of Lee’s Summit; five grandchildren, Kerry Morgan and her husband, Casey, Ryan Smither and his wife, Brandie, Shayne Smither, Curtis Maxon, and Ben Maxon; and two great-grandchildren, Colton and Sarah.
