Obituary - Mary Marie Dobson Madill

Mary Marie Dobson Madill, 92, Nevada, passed away at Moore-Few Care Center on December 26th, 2017. She was born in Cherryvale, Kansas on November 10, 1925, to Glenn and Lillian (nee Kellam) Dobson, area restaurateurs. She married Ernest Martin Madill in 1946 in Chanute, Kansas. Ernie passed away in Nevada on November 3, 2009.

At age six, Mary was a mascot of the Cherryvale American Legion girls' drum and bugle corps, which helped fuel her interest in music. In high school band she played the drums, and after graduating from Chanute High School, was the drummer in an all-girls band featured at events, weddings and other functions in the area. Her love of music was lifelong.

Mary endured loss at an early age, and learned by her mother's example how grit and determination are the tools she must use to survive whatever hardship life throws at her. In 1931, Mary's and her brother Glenn's father died. Five months later they lost their maternal grandfather, Dr. Sam Kellam, Cherryvale's beloved town doctor and president of a nearby meat-packing business, who was robbed and murdered while delivering payroll to his employees. His tragic murder was never solved.

Ernie and Mary moved to Nevada in 1958 to operate their new business, Madill Tire & Supply, located on the square. While Ernie ran the store, Mary began a career at Farm & Home Savings and Loan Association, and retired from there as executive secretary to the vice president after 25 years. She was an active participant in the community through clubs and organizations, and a long-time member of Business and Professional Women. Her involvement with the local Lares Club, a women's social organization that held fundraisers to benefit different needs in Nevada gave her cherished, lifelong friends.

She and Ernie spent much of their free time golfing and traveling, and shared that love for music and dancing. They were well known to part many a dance floor as they spun to their favorite big band sounds from their heyday and beyond.

Surviving Mary are her children, Marsha Lindsey and her husband Melvin, Larry Madill, Sr. and his wife Linda, and Susan Spanel and her husband George; brothers Sam Morford and Ken Morford. Mary has four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Obituary - Vivian Lea (Coe) Evans

Vivian Lea (Coe) Evans, was born November 25, 1947 to Harry and Helen (Squires) Coe. Vivian, or Dolly as they called her spent most of her childhood on the family farm in Great Bend, Kansas with her Grandmother and Grand-Dad, where she enjoyed her cousins, her horse Topper, and even her pet Chicken Little. Vivian was saved and baptized as a child at her church where she also often played piano.

As a teenager, she moved to Clinton with her parents where she attended high school. In 1964 she married Johnny Everhart and had 1 son, Mike Everhart. In 1965, she became a sister and friend to Jenni Coe. Later, in 1973, she married Gary Evans and had 1 daughter, Renee (Evans) Frost.

Vivian loved her kids and family very much and they loved her more than anything. She worked hard to cook, clean, and take care of all their needs. She often had an outside job as a waitress, and worked many years as a cashier at Conoco in Lowry City and Clinton. She was always supportive of her kids, not only as their Mother, but also as their friend. She made holidays and birthdays extra special including wonderful meals, decorations, Santa Claus fun, Easter egg hunts, birthday cakes and parties. Weekly Sunday dinners were at Big Mamas house for many years.

Vivian loved going to garage sales, shopping, listening to Elvis, caring for all of her cats and animals like children, and mostly spending time with her family. In 2005, she became "Grandma" to Brett Leigh Frost, which brought her great joy. She enjoyed living close and watching her granddaughter play and grow. In 2015, she got a grandson, Toby Michael Everhart. She loved seeing him and hearing Toby stories from Mike. She was so happy that Brett and Toby became such good buddies.

Although we will miss her terribly, we have many, many great memories!! We are thankful she is no longer in pain, no more cancer, no more worries. Mostly we are thankful that if she can no longer be here with us, that she can be in Heaven with Jesus and those that went before her.

She is survived by daughter Renee Frost, husband Brian, granddaughter Brett, (Deepwater); Daughter-in-law Melissa Everhart, grandson Toby (Clinton); Sister Jenni Coe (Bolivar); Sister-in-law Linda Dearston (Deepwater), her beloved cats and many neighbors and friends.

Stealing from Dollar General in Lowry City

On Dec. 23, a St. Clair County deputy responded to Dollar General in Lowry City in reference to shoplifting.

Once on scene the deputy spoke with the store manager. She stated that she was informed by one of the employees, that a man, wearing a brown coat and black hat, entered the store and put six or seven DVD’s into his coat pocket and left the store without paying for them.

The manager stated that as the suspect was leaving, she took a picture of the car, including the Missouri license plate. The deputy requested dispatch to run the plate. The vehicle is registered to Gary Dozier.

St. Clair County deputies went to the home of Dozier. The deputies asked if he owned a green car. Dozier stated he did, but his wife had the car. The deputy asked Dozier if he was at Dollar General earlier in the evening. Dozier stated that his step-son and grand children were there earlier. The deputy informed Dozier that he matched the description of a suspected shoplifter. Dozier’s picture was sent to the manager of Dollar General and she confirmed that he was the suspect.

The deputies explained that if Dozier was cooperative with them, they would not take him to jail. It was also explained that the paperwork would be submitted to the prosecuting attorney’s office for formal charges. Dozier retrieved the DVD’s and handed them to the deputies. The deputy asked about the missing plastic wrapper. Dozier stated he tore the wrappers off and threw them out the window of the car.

The deputies took the DVD’s back to Dollar General to get the prices of them. Total value of DVD’s is $44.85.

Witness statements were filled out by the Dollar General manager and employee.

Urich man arrested in St. Clair County

On Dec. 23, Andrew Mullen, 33, Urich, was arrested by a St. Clair County deputy on class E felony resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing. Mullen also had four warrants out of Henry County that he was arrested on.

Total bond is set at $10,000 cash only on two Henry County warrants and $30,000 cash or surety on the other warrants.

The arrest comes after an attempted traffic stop by a St. Clair County deputy on Dec. 22. Mullen fled from the deputy in his vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed during adverse road conditions. Mullen’s car left the surfaced road and ended up in the roadside ditch.

Mullen and the female passenger fled from the vehicle and into the surrounding woods. The suspects were unable to be located after a scrupulous search of the area.

During the evening of Dec. 23, a tip came into the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office that the male suspect that deputies were looking for, may be in the restroom of the Port C Store gas station. Deputies arrived on scene and made contact Andrew Mullen and took him into custody.
