EMPHASIS: Captain James E. McDonald Retires After 28 Years Of Dedicated Service

Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the following retirement effective March 1, 2020:

Captain James E. McDonald, commanding officer of Troop H, St. Joseph, MO, will retire after 28 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Missouri.

McDonald was appointed to the Patrol on January 1, 1992, as a member of the 64th Recruit Class. Upon completing his training at the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop H, Zone 8, Clinton County. On January 1, 1997, he was promoted to corporal and designated assistant zone commander of Troop H, Zone 2, Nodaway County. McDonald was promoted to sergeant on August 1, 1999, and designated zone supervisor of that same zone. On August 22, 2004, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to Troop H Headquarters. McDonald was promoted to captain on April 1, 2014, and designated commanding officer of Troop H.

Captain McDonald was born in Mexico, MO. He graduated from Community R-VI High School in Laddonia, MO, in 1981. McDonald served in the U.S. Army from 1982-1987 as a military policeman. He attended the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command in 2011. In 2014, he attended Leadership in Police Organizations Executive Seminar, and in 2019, he attended the Police Leadership: The Westpoint Model Executive course. Capt. McDonald and his wife, Beth (Adams), have three children and five grandchildren with one on the way.

The Barton County Sheriff's Office has CANCELLED an Endangered SILVER Advisory for a missing adult incident that occurred at 106 Brookfield Drive, Liberal, MO at 12:00 PM on 02/17/2020.

The CANCELLED endangered SILVER advisory missing adult is:

John Shomin, a white, male, age 77, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 188 pounds, gray hair, brown eyes, last seen possibly wearing tan overalls.   

Diagnosed Medical Condition(s):  Dementia

Vehicle Information:

Dark Blue 2015 Ford F150 bearing Missouri, 7PAK60 last seen Westbound US 54 from Macks Creek

Obituary - Lela May Arnold

Lela May Sherman Arnold died January 12, 2020 in North Carolina. Her wishes were to be cremated. 

Graveside memorial services will be 12 noon, Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri. 

Lela was born October 3, 1935 to Clara and Victor Sherman. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Arnold in 2015.

Lela is survived by her son Ken Arnold of North Carolina.

Missing Person – 77-year-old Liberal, MO man

A 77-year-old Liberal, MO man, John Shomin, was last seen around 8 a.m. Feb 17, 2020. When Linda Shomin (wife) returned home around 12 p.m., John was not home and has not returned home. He was last wearing coveralls, white hat with a black front, driving a 2015, Navy Blue Ford pickup.

John has had recent episodes with dementia and could be headed to Girard, Ks. John is typically in bed around 7 p.m., and this is out of his character. At this time, we do not have a picture of the truck. If you have any information regarding John Shomin or his whereabouts, contact the Barton County Sheriff's Office at 417-682-554

Boom Boom!

Several reports of a loud boom or explosion has been reported a short time ago in Bates County. 

Many fire personnel and police are searching at this time for the cause of the boom but have yet to find anything.

Obituary- Dorothy D. (Jenkins) Matheney

Dorothy D. Matheney, 87, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. Dot was born March 22, 1932 in Nevada, MO to Harry M. and Laura B. (Young) Jenkins. On August 31, 1951 she married Vernon L. Matheney in Tulare County, California and he preceded her in death on July 19, 2004.
Dot was employed by Nellie Don, Key Industries, and Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. She later worked for the Nevada State Hospital for 15 years until her retirement in 1995. She enjoyed spending time with her family

She is survived by one son, Harry Matheney, Milo, MO; a brother-in-law, Novel Matheney and his wife Betty, Exeter, CA; one sister-in-law, Shirley Jenkins, Nevada; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Vernon, she was preceded in death by two sons, Vernon Matheney, Jr., and William Cecil Matheney; her parents; three sisters, Virginia Wilt, Margaret Kellerhals, Velma Phillips; two brothers, Cecil Jenkins, and Raymond Jenkins.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Moore Cemetery in Nevada with Pastor Roger Beach officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
