Smoke on the square this morning

Smoke emanating from the south side of the square this morning was concerning, however the cause turned out to be minor in nature. A smoker located at the back of Jackwagon BBQ got out of control but firefighters remedied the situation in short order. The scene has been cleared, and the restaurant is open for business as usual.

Editor's note- we're guessing there might be a special today....very burnt, burnt ends?!?

Pedestrian killed in Bourbon County Kansas

On 2/26/20 around 4:43am the Kansas State Highway Patrol responded to a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle on Northbound US 69 Highway at Arrowhead Road ( Mile marker 54.9) in rural Bourbon County Kansas.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2005 Dodge Durango driven by 26 year old Stephanie L. Klepac of Girard, Kansas slide into the grassy median due to icy conditions, the vehicle went airborne and struck the pedestrian which was outside of his vehicle.

The pedestrian who was identified as 48 year old John R. Morris of Liberal, Missouri was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and he was taken to Frontier Forensics.

The driver of the Durango wasn't injured in this accident. 

Obituary - John Edgar Guffey, Sr.

John Edgar Guffey, 73, of Archie, MO, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, with a visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, Missouri. Memorial contributions are suggested to Gower Convalescent Center to the order of John Guffey account.

John was born February 9, 1947 in Adair County, Iowa, the son of Grover and Norma Jean (Glospie) Guffey. John married Wanda Sue Cox on March 13, 1971, they enjoyed 42 years of marriage before her passing in June of 2013. To this union, they had four children: John, Christina, Angela, and Kevin. John spent his career working for Honeywell as a Plater and Foreman, retiring in 2009. John enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and playing the guitar. His special time was spent with his wife, Wanda, going on trips, spending time at the lake, and going on cruises.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda Guffey; his son, John Guffey, Jr.; his daughter, Angela “GiGi” Guffey; and his brother, Melvin. He is survived by his daughter, Christina Hawkins; his son, Kevin Guffey; 6 grandchildren: Sherry Laughlin, Sarah Kirby, Danell “D.J” Guffey, Jessica Guffey, Megan Guffey, and Tenisha Guffey; several great-grandchildren; his sisters: Betty and Mary; and his brother, Richard.

What: Henry County Route H CLOSED between County Road SW-1601 and South Deepwater Creek west of Montrose

When: 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday, February 28

Details: MoDOT crews replacing a deteriorating drain pipe underneath the road

Traffic Impacts:

• Henry County Route H CLOSED only where crews are set up working
• Drivers will be able to get to driveways and entrances on either side of the work zone, but will not be able to travel through the work zone
• Drivers urged to find alternate routes. No signed detours are planned.
• Electronic message boards located near the planned road work will alert drivers to any changes in the work schedule
• Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

(Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule)

Obituary - Kenneth Dean Silver

Memorial services for Kenneth Silver will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri.

Visitation will be prior to services from 1-2 p.m. Friday at Schowengerdt Chapel. Contributions to Fund for Faith Silver. Online condolences, www.schowengerdtchapel.com.

Kenneth Dean Silver, 88 of Nevada, Missouri passed away after a very short illness on Thursday, February 20, 2020. 

Kenny was born on June 21, 1931 in Haxtun, Colorado to Ira & Hazel Silver. He grew up with 13 siblings. Kenny married the love of his life, Thelma Kendrick on January 18, 1963 in Oklahoma, and she survives of the home.

Survivors in addition to his wife and very special granddaughter Faith, include one sister, Philis of Atchison, Kansas; 6 known grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews to which he truly felt something unique and special about each and every one. Not to mention the countless others that held very special places in his heart. Most of knew him simply as “Pops.” We can’t forget his 2 girlfriends, Tammy and Janet, as well as his other daughter/sister-in-law, Cissy. He was proceeded in death by his parents; all 3 of his children, Kenny Jr, Tammy and Tim; 12 Siblings; and a step grandson.

Bettels announces run for assessor

I have officially signed up to run as your Bates County Assessor.

I am a graduate of Butler High School and a 4th generation farmer. I have been an active member of the Bates County Cattlemen for over 25 years serving as Treasurer, Vice President and President. I also served as Director of Missouri Cattlemen Association for 10 years and served on the MCA Beef House Committee for three years.

I am an active member of the St. Patrick’s Church in Butler serving on the Parish Council for over 10 years and co-chair for the annual Lenten Fish Fry’s.

I appreciate all the support and encouragement that I have received from the community and I look forward to the opportunity to serve Bates County.
