Sad news from the local racing community
I'm saddened to pass along that Scotty Bitner, of Frontenac, Kansas has recently passed away. He was one of the track champions at Nevada Speedway in 1963, the year the track opened. This photo is with his championship car from that year. - Courtesy of Nevada Speedway
BCMH Auxiliary Gift Shop is now open to the public!
Bates County Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the Auxiliary Gift Shop is now open to the public!
The newly built gift shop, which was completed in April, is now located on the west end of the hospital lobby, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Our Auxiliary members are excited to welcome all to their new shop. A great time to stop by is during their clearance sale, June 22, 23 and 24, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Officer Involved shooting in Garden City

When officers arrived on scene they observed a female on the front porch with a gun in her hand. Deputies gave numerous commands to drop the weapon, however as the female pointed the firearm at the deputies, one deputy fired his service pistol, striking the female in the torso.
The female was transported by Garden City Emergency Services with critical injuries to a local hospital where she passed away from her injuries.
The Western Missouri Sheriff’s Office Critical Response Team, composed of deputies from Cass, Henry, and Bates, are investigating the shooting.

Obituary - Tammy Jean Fleming
Tammy Jean Fleming, 54, of Pleasanton, Kansas died on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at St. Joseph Medical Center after a long illness. Tammy was born August 16, 1966 in Pinckneyville, Illinois to Gerald and Clara Mae (Thomas) Shrum.
She graduated from Pleasanton High School as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1984. On July 3, 1984 she married Curtis Lee Fleming in Pleasanton, Kansas.
Tammy enjoyed reading, going to the movies, traveling and going to casinos. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pleasanton. Tammy excelled at her chosen profession as a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist.
Tammy was preceded in death by her father, Gerald Shrum.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Fleming; two sons, Matthew and Marcus Fleming; one daughter, Megan Fleming; her mother and step-father, Clara and Lesley Heflin; three brothers, Gerry Shrum, Jeff Shrum, and Jason Heflin; two half-brothers, Gregory Shrum and Brian Shrum.
A funeral for Tammy will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Schneider Funeral Home & Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until service time at the chapel. Burial will be in Pleasanton Cemetery, Pleasanton, KS.

Road Closure Starting Wednesday In Nevada
Johnson Drive in front of Holiday Inn in Nevada will close beginning at 7:00AM on Wednesday June 9, 2021 (weather permitting) for installation of new storm drainage and street repairs. Daily closures are expected through the end of July, 2021.
Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution when in the work zone and find alternate routes. We appreciate everyone's patience. This project is funded with the ½ cent Transportation Tax.
Garden City woman injured in one vehicle rollover accident in Southern Missouri
On June 6th around 5:58 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Christian County along with Christian County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident in the northbound lanes of US 65 Highway and Saddlebrook.
The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of this accident by Bilyeu Towing of Ozark, Missouri
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio driven by 23 year old Sabrina G. Wood of Garden City, Missouri slid on a wet roadway and impacted a rock bluff causing the vehicle to overturn.
Sabrina G. Wood sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield for treatment.
The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of this accident by Bilyeu Towing of Ozark, Missouri
