Two escape injury after accident involving a Amish buggy in Henry County

On October 6th around 5:22 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Henry County along with Henry County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident involving a vehicle that struck an Amish buggy on NE Highway Y at NE CR 1100 in rural Henry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the southbound 2000 Chevrolet driven by 47 year old Betty J. Brown of Clinton, Missouri made a left hand turn at an intersection and struck a Amish buggy in the drivers side door.

Betty Brown and the buggy driver 24 year old John H. Shrock of Windsor, Missouri both sustained injuries and both refused medical treatment at the scene of this accident.

Obituary - Lane Harrington

Benjamin Lane Harrington, age 18, of Lamar, Missouri passed away October 2, 2022.

Lane was born May 12, 2004 in Joplin, Missouri to Matthew Gene Manley and Lindsey Sue Harrington. Lane graduated from Lamar High School in the class of 2022 and was currently enrolled as an apprentice with the Missouri Rural Water Association.

Lane worked for C.P.W.S.D. #1 Barton County as a public water supply operator and also part-time at All Care Diesel in Carterville, Missouri. While in high school, Lane worked hard and received Workey's National Certificate of Career Readiness-Gold Level, ASW certification in brakes, engine repair, engine performance, maintenance, light repair, steering and suspension. 

He was awarded Student of Excellence-Automotive, Student of Excellence-Service, and Excellence in Professionalism for his work in Technical English. He was in the Inaugural Class of Internships at LCTC at Lamar High School; Lane was Student Ambassador for Automotive Technology and was an incredible program ambassador. He went above and beyond to find hands-on activities to draw interest to the automotive class. 

When students came to visit, he would have kids who had never touched a tool before, working on putting tires on rims or examining the underside of a vehicle on the lift. 

Lane would always get a big smile on his face when he helped kids realize they could do something new. Lane was always willing to help anyone, and often showed that by helping pay for those students that couldn't afford membership dues.

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Tannor Harrington of Carthage, Missouri and William Manley of Lamar; grandparents, Lori Harrington of Carthage, MO., Lee Harrington of Woodward, Oklahoma, Tammy Shutters of Lamar, MO., Randy and Joyce Manley of Reeds, Missouri; great-grandparents, Elroy and Diane Jones; his girlfriend Alejandra Lepe of Lamar, MO; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Lamar City Park followed by an afternoon of celebrating Lane's life with family and friends.

Contributions are suggested and made payable to either the LCTC Program at Lamar High School or Daniel Funeral Home for a scholarship fund for the LCTC program to continue to honor Lane's memory by providing financial help to those students in need, it will be called "Lane Harrington's Legacy".

Liberal takes down Appleton City

The Liberal Bulldogs (5-2) defeated the Appleton City Bulldogs (4-3) last night in 8-Man High School Football action with a final score of 40-22.

Appleton City went down early by a score of 20-8 but managed to battle back and only trailing 20-16 at halftime. Liberal was too strong in the 2nd half and managed to pull away.

Liberal will look to keep on winning as they will hit the road on October 14th to play the Rich Hill Tigers (0-6).  

Appleton City will look to get back on the winning track as they host the Lockwood Tigers.

Obituary - William Raymond Ratty

William Raymond Ratty was born to this earth on July 21, 1952 and left us on September 30, 2022. He grew up on the south end of Kansas City in the post-war Ruskin Heights neighborhood, site of the historic Ruskin tornado of 1957.

Bill married Debra Skoff in 1978. He was stepfather to her son, Mark Woods.

Bill and Debra celebrated 44 years of marriage this past summer. Bill made his living as a flooring contractor in and around Kansas City. During the time the family lived in Rich Hill, Bill was frequently on the sidelines at Rich Hill football games cheering for Mark and cajoling the coaches and officials.

Bill was an avid Chiefs fan and fisherman, so much so that to many he was known simply as “Catfish.” Bill & Debi spent 20 years in Flagler Beach, Florida before returning to Missouri in 2012 in order to be closer to their families. Bill is survived by his mother, Norma Nation of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; his wife, Debra of Adrian, Missouri; his step-son, Mark Woods of Palm Coast, Florida; his sister, Carol Overton of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; his brother, Chuck Nation of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.

Obituary - David Allan Reed

David Allan Reed, 76, of Freeman, Missouri passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. A Celebration of life will be held at his home from 1-9 pm at 26601 Bennett Rd, Freeman, MO 64746. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to his surviving wife, Lisa Reed, to assist with medical and final expenses.

David was born on September 21, 1946 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Vern E. and Pearl J. (Anderson) Reed. He grew up in Iowa, graduating from Webster County High School in Burnside, Iowa. He then went on to study at Iowa Central Community College prior to beginning his work career. David was married to Lisa Senior on April 17th, 1987. He worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a District Sales Manager for many years in Iowa, but moved to Missouri in 1986 opening his business, Dave's Install Service, and owned and operated this business for the next 25 years in the Kansas City market.

David enjoyed riding motorcycles, working on his property, and running his business, as well as, helping others throughout the community. In his down time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and had a tremendous love for his dogs, Mia and Hocus.

David is preceded in death by his parents and his son, William "Charlie" Villanueva. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; his children: David Reed, Jr. (Jerrilyn) of Urbandale, IA; Larry Reed of Des Moines, IA; Pedro Villanueva (Sarah) of Bonner Springs, KS; his grandchildren: Anthony Reed, Jared Reed, Danielle Reed, Brandon Reed, all of Des Moines, IA; and Sophia and Nolan Villanueva of Bonner Springs, KS; great-granddaughters, Rylee and Haylee Reed of Des Moines, IA; and his brother, Donald Reed (Jean) of Abilene, KS.






Freezing temperatures for some on Saturday morning

A cold and dry air mass will move over the area Friday into Saturday. Saturday morning temperatures will fall into upper 20s in northeastern Missouri and the lower to middle 30s elsewhere.






Obituary - James Hayes

James Hayes, 57 of Holden, Missouri passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022 at his home in Holden. Cremation, with private family services to be held at a later date.

Jimmy was born in Louisville, Kentucky 9/24/65 the son of Johnnie and Carole Hayes. He attended Shawnee High School and graduated in 1984.

Jim is survived by his wife Jan. His daughter Megan Anderson (Jason), daughter Samantha Hayes, son, Matthew Hayes, step daughter Angel, step son Allen, and his sister Sherrie Hayes Knight (David). Also many nieces, nephews cousins aunts and Uncles. Also he had grandchildren he loved more than anything, James Katelynn, Joshua, Grayson, Grace, Destinee, Dakota, Dusty, Dixie, Delsin, Angelica, and Chloe.

Jimmy is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents Tildon and Carlene Cockeril and Alta and James Hayes. His parents Johnnie and Carole Hayes, his sister Regina Hayes Cox. As well as cousins, aunts Uncles and friends.
