Two arrested after assault in Nevada

On Monday January 22nd the Nevada Police Department responded to a domestic assault in progress. When officers arrived on scene they made contact with the victim and a witness who said 27 year old Rashia Carlson of Nevada, Missouri and a 26 year old Robert Prentice also of Nevada assaulted the victim after getting into an argument.

The victim stated that she was hit in the head multiple times, and once she was on the ground, Mr. Prentice jumped in and began to kick her in the side and stomp her in the knee. After the assault both of the the suspect took off in different directions.

Police later arrested Carlson and Prentice on a charge of felony third degree domestic assault, and are being held in the Vernon County Jail with $25,000 cash only bonds.

Dense fog this morning

Dense fog is expected to remain through the morning hours reducing visibility below a quarter mile. In northern Missouri, a few slick spots will be possible with temperatures near freezing. Rain is expected to build into the region today, exiting this evening. Heaviest rainfall amounts are expected across central Missouri.

Butler Senior Carter Trumbore Now in Excess of 2,000 Career Points

The Butler Bears met the Pleasant Hill Roosters in the first round of the Clinton 99th Annual Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Bears enter the match-up having a decent season on the backs of some great senior leadership in Dylan Davidson and Carter Trumbore, surrounded by some athletic underclassmen.

The Bears got off to a sluggish start, with 2:26 left to go in the opening period Pleasant Hill hoisted an 11 point lead over the Bears. The Roosters came out of the gate shooting lights out from deep, hitting 4/5 from deep to begin the game. The Bears found themselves trailing 16-8 after the first 8.

The Bears ramped up the scoring and found their grove in the 2nd quarter, scoring 23 points while holding the roosters to 11. The Bears went into the break with a 32-27 advantage over the Roosters.

The Bears really kept their foot on the gas in the second half, not loosing a quarter after the sluggish 1st. The Bears would take a 74-62 win back to Butler.

The Bears had multiple players with some great games, led by Carter Trumbore who had 40 points on the night with 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. 

Senior Dylan Davison had a career high 26 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Carter now has over 2,000 points in his career at Butler High School. It was a fantastic team win for the Butler Bears.

The Roosters were led by Irwin with 25 points in the game.

The Bears will face Summit Christian next who defeated Clinton tonight with a final of 77-47. Summit was led by Max Rieger who had 17 points, 10 steals and 6 assists.

Obituary - Nancy Lee Brewster

It was the desire of Nancy Lee Brewster, age 80 of Lee's Summit, Missouri to be cremated. There are no public services at this time. Funeral arrangements with the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Online condolences www.schowengerdtchapel.com.

Nancy Lee Brewster, age 80, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, passed away at her home in Butler, Missouri, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Nancy was born on June 15, 1943, near Union Star, Missouri to Gordon Redding VanGilder and Mary Isabell VanGilder. Nancy and her siblings, Mary and Michael primarily grew up in Lee's Summit, Missouri and she was a graduate of Lee's Summit in 1961. She was courted by and married to the love of her life, Richard on December 29, 1961. She was a devoted wife to Richard and mother of four children: Mark, Laura, Kenneth, and Evelyn. Nancy was a crucial part of the success of the family business, Richard A. Brewster Roofing, before their retirement and move to a farm south of Butler, Missouri in 1991. Nancy was an avid collector of arts and crafts, knick-knacks and was a bookworm like no other, but Nancy's greatest joy was spending time with Richard, her children and grandchildren.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Mary VanGilder; her brother-in-law, Larry Owens; and her grandchildren, Travis Allen Brewster, Richard Allen Brewster, Chloe Nichole Brewster, and Phalyn Nicole Paulson.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Richard Allen Brewster; her siblings; Mary Owens and Michael (Brenda) Vangilder; her children; Mark (Becky) Brewster, Laura Brewster, Kenneth (Keri) Brewster, Evelyn (Todd) Burgess; her grandchildren, Casey (Seth) Frame, Allison (Andrew) Wilkins, Jessica (Kartik) Ghai, Jessica (Glenn) Messick, Samantha (Josh) Legler, Lauren Belzer, Amelia Brewster, Sierrah (Josh) Hutchcraft, Adam Brewster and Austin Belzer; her great-grandchildren, Madison Paulson, Hunter Messick, Cale Paulson, Wyatt Messick, Greyson Wilkins, Easton Messick, Kamden Wilkins, Harper Hutchcraft, Hazel Hutchcraft, Havery Hutchcraft, and Rhett Messick; and her favorite granddog, Heidi Mae.

Lady Blackhawks & Lady Bears Matchup in Clinton Tournament

Adrian and Butler both made the trek to Clinton High School just to face-off against each other in the first round of the 46th Annual Clinton Girls Basketball Tournament. The Lady Blackhawks and Lady Bears were slated to square off as the first game of the night, at 4pm.

The first quarter left a lot to be desired for both teams offensive as only 13 total points were scored in the opening period. At the end of 8, the Lady Blackhawks sat atop the Lady Bears with a score of 7-5.

Butler jumpstarted the 2nd quarter with an impressive 10-3 run that would eventually propel them to a 7 point advantage with 2 minutes left in the first half. However, the Bears run would be thwarted by the Blackhawks who would force numerous Butler turnovers that they would then cash in for points on the other end, leading a run of their own. Adrian would take a 22-19 edge into the break.

The second half would see a combination of sloppy passing by the Bears and quick hand speed by the Blackhawks. This combination would allow Adrian to win both the 3rd and 4th quarters pretty handedly. The Lady Bears would be turnover the basketball over a total of 33 times on the night, the Blackhawks would convert a majority of those turnovers into points and walk away with a 48-33 victory.

The Blackhawks wer u e led by Riley Essenpries with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals. Olivia Hughes chipped in 9 points and 8 rebounds, while Mylie Bruto would contribute 8 points and 6 steals on the night.

Kylee Dubray led all scoring for the the Lady Bears with 17 points and added 7 rebounds and 3 blocks to her stat line as well.

The Lady Blackhawk’s will rest until Saturday, while the Lady Bears will face against Clinton next on Thursday night at 7pm.

Arrest made after traffic stop in Cass County

On Thursday January 18, Deputies assigned to the Cass County Sheriff's Office Criminal Apprehension Unit conducted a vehicle stop.

Deputies located what was believed to be powdered fentanyl, methamphetamine and a large sum of cash during the investigation.
31-year-old Tanner Ferrari was taken into custody as a result. After the arrest, Deputies served a search warrant on Saturday, January 20 in Peculiar.

Once there, investigators seized additional evidence. Cass County prosecutors have charged Ferrari with second-degree drug trafficking — which is a Class B Felony.

Mr. Ferrari is currently being held in the Cass County Jail with no bond allowed.
