Sheldon boys win district basketball championship


We would like to congratulate the Sheldon High School Boys for winning a district basketball championship tonight in Hume over the Drexel Bobcats with a final score of 60-46. Way to go guys! Best of luck at state!

Archie boys fall short in district championship game

The Archie Whirlwind Boys fell to the Crest Ridge Cougars today 49-52 in the district championship game.

This was a tough game with many lead changes in the District Championship! Way to lay it all on the line Whirlwinds!!!

Butler bears claim District Basketball Championship with win over the Adrian blackhawks

Butler bears claim District Basketball Title with win over the Adrian blackhawks...

There would be a Bates County Team victorious in the Class 3, District 13 championship as the Adrian Blackhawks would face off against the Butler Bears. The Bears come into the match-up on a 10 game win streak, sitting at 20-6 with the 2 seed in the tournament. Adrian comes in at 20-3 , with an 8 game wining streak and the 1 seed in the district. The Blackhawks won the previous matchup earlier this season with a final of 52-38, right out of Christmas break.

Rusow would begin the scoring with a jumper for the Blackhawks after Adrain controlled the tip. Davidson would record a put-back basket to knot it a 2-2. Trumbore would claim Butler’s first lead, but not for long as Kramer would bury a trifecta to spark a 12-4 Adrian run. The Bears would try and calm the Adrian run by going on a 6-0 run of their own to end the quarter and trail 21-16 at the end of 8 minutes.

To start the 2nd period, Kramer would drive and sink a layup, Mallat would follow that up getting fouled on a 3 point shot and going 2/3 from the line to spark a 4-0 Bears run that would see the Bears pull within 3. Rusow would grab a put-back bucket before Carter would drill a three to tie up the game at 25 a piece. 

Out of an Adrian time-out, Tenholder would retake an Adrian lead, and spark a 7-0 Blackhawks run, going up 32-25, forcing a Butler time-out. Out of the time-out, Trumbore drilled home a shot from range and the Bears would go into halftime trialing the Blackhawks 34-31.

Kramer would begin the 2nd half with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 4 for the Blackhawks. Trumbore hit a jumper, Kramer elevated for another jump shot, answered back by Payne hitting a 3 to pull back within 2. Trumbore would drive to the basket go back within 2, but Kramer drove to the rack well. It was a 3-0 Bears run to close out the 3rd and pull within in 1, 42-41 going into the 4th and final quarter.

To start the final period, Miller would hammer home a three for the Blackhawks sparking a 5-0 spurt in favor of Adrian before Trumbore drilled a 3 to bring it back to a one possession game, and sparking 5-0 Butler run narrowing the lead to just 1 again. Hamilton would answer, drilling another 3. With just under 3 minutes left, Payne would step up and bury a wide open deep ball to gift the Bears their first lead of the half, 51-50. 

With 45 seconds, Trumbore would go to the line with a chance to cushion the Butler lead, he would hit both, taking a 53-50 lead. Kramer would toe the line for the Blackhawks and put in both, shrinking the lead back to just 1 for the Bears. Trumbore would return to the penalty stripe where he would sink a pair to go back up 3, 55-52. 

Hamilton would toe the line for three throws, and a chance to tie the game back up with with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. Hamilton knocked down the first two, but the third rattled out and Davidson would secure the board for the Bears. The Blackhawk's would instantly foul and send Trumbore back to the stripe. 

Mallett would come up with a massive steal for the Bears, and get the ball back into the hands of Trumbore who would be sent to the line once again where he knocked down a pair and the Bears secured a 59-54 victory and the title of District Champs.

Trumbore led all scores, he accounted for 42 of the Bears 59. Mallatt come up with 3 massive steals for Butler, while Davidson tallied 5 points and 11 rebounds.

Adrian was lead by Kramer with 25 points. Rusow collected 17 rebounds and 4 blocks to go along with his 6 points.

Congratulations to both teams making it this far. The Bears will face Summit Christian on Tuesday.

Harrisonville Police seeking public assistance

The attached photos are of a suspect in a burglary of the Everyday Convenience Store. The burglary occurred in the early morning hours of 02/24/2024.

Appleton City Lady Bulldogs win district basketball championship

If you weren't in our gym tonight, you missed out! Our Appleton City Lady Bulldogs earned a District Championship in front of a huge crowd this evening! ! It was a great night to be a Bulldog as our girls outscored Leeton 40-27.

The girls advance to the Sweet 16 and play Pilot Grove on Monday, February 26th. Additional game information TBA. #BulldogProud





























Hume Lady Hornets Record Breaking Season Comes to an End

The Hume Lady Hornets were one of many Bates County teams that were in the mix for a District Title this week. The Lady Hornets were the 1 seed in class 1 district 6 and would be matching up against the 2 seeded Liberal Bulldogs for the ‘ship.

Each team got off to a slow start offensively, but at the end of one, Liberal had doubled up the Hornets with a score of 10-5.

Foul trouble would become a slight issue for the Hornets in the second period, and they would go into the locker room trailing the Bulldogs 23-7.

Midway through the 3rd, the Hornets had pulled back within 10, 28-18. But the Bulldogs would come out and take a 37-25 lead after 3 periods. The Bulldogs would be able to roll to victory with a final of 47-37. Swarnes, for the Bulldogs, led alls scores with 19.

Morrison led Hume with 13 points, while Lewis had 8 as well.

Even though they fell short in the championship, the Lady Hornets had a spectacular, record breaking season. Congratulations to the the Hume Lady Hornets for what you were able to accomplish!

State Farm Student Athlete of the week: Butler Sophomore Kellen Long

We are thrilled to announce this week's Athlete of the Week, Kellen Long! Kellen was nominated by Coach Long who stated, “he was the State Runner up for Class 1 at the weight class 150. 

His final record on the year was 51-3. He is a captain on our team as a sophomore and is also a leader in the classroom. Congratulations Kellen, it was a pleasure speaking with you!

About Kellen:
Kellen is a sophomore at Butler High School. He is involved in football and wrestling. We asked Kellen what he believes it takes to become an elite athlete. He told us, "it is about putting effort into everything you do. Also, just be supportive to your teammates and the others around you.”

•Favorite sport: Wrestling

•Who inspires him: “My dad, Dale Long. He knows how good I can be and he always pushes me to those limits. He makes me do my best all of the time.”

•Favorite sports memory: This year, making it to the state finals.

•Favorite sonic drink: Dr. Pepper

Congratulations on a second place finish at state that is an amazing accomplishment!
