Successful evening at Area 7 fall speaking! 

Butler High School Junior Whitley Randalls won the Missouri Cattleman’s Contest and will move onto Districts next week. 

Butler High School Junior Dara Ramage was 3rd in her room for Young Farmers and Farmwives. Very proud of both of these young ladies

Shooting in rural Cole Camp

11/05/24 at approximately 8:30 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a rural Cole Camp residence on B Highway for a shooting victim. Scotty R. Roark 56, of rural Lincoln MO was located with a gunshot wound through his lower torso. Scotty stated his wife, Katherine L. Roark 52, shot him as he was airing up his truck tire at their rural Lincoln residence on AB Highway.

Scotty was taken by ambulance to a trauma hospital. Due to inclement weather the air ambulance was unable to fly.

Katherine was taken into custody at their residence without any resistance and transported to the Benton County Jail where she was placed on a 24 hour investigative hold. This is an ongoing investigation, so I will update you as this progresses.


Obituary - William Roland Pearman

William Roland Pearman, age 64, of Warsaw, passed away Monday, November 4, 2024 at the Warsaw Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on April 2, 1960 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of William Donald Pearman and Derinda (Hamlett).

Roland grew up in Stillwell, Kansas and graduated from Blue Valley High School in 1978. He loved to travel and was an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter. He owned and operated Roland’s Auto on Main Street in Warsaw for twenty-five years.

Roland is survived by his mother, Derinda Aswegan, of Warsaw, two children; Dusty Demoussett (Jeremy), of Clinton, Missouri and Samantha Pearman, of Warsaw, three grandchildren; Mercedes Baer, of Clinton, Aspen Baer, of Clinton and Nathan Baer, of Raymore, Missouri, three great grandchildren; Braxton Bauer, Salem Burton and Jackson Griffith, three sisters; Vicki Brewster (Dan), of Stillwell, Kansas, Judy Long (Bob), of St. Joseph, Missouri and Carol Belt (Kenny), of Welda, Kansas, a brother, Jerry Aswegan (Tonia), of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, numerous nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.

Obituary - Alvina Harrison-Wells

Alvina Harrion-Wells, 93 of Butler, Missouri passed away Friday, November 1, 2024 at her home in Butler. A Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009). 

Graveside services will follow, with military honors, at 1:30 pm Friday, November 8, 2024 in Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Butler Nazarene Church or to the Bates County Historical Society. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Alvina Maye Harrison-Wells was born January 1, 1931 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Pearl and Helen Baize Harrison. Alvina grew up in Butler, Missouri and graduated from Butler High School. She then attended the General Hospital School of Nursing and received he BSN from the Missouri University. Following graduation, she continued her education at Pepperdine University where she later earned her Master’s Degree.

Alvina proudly served her country in the US Navy, retiring in 1982 as Captain Alvina Harrison-Wells after 20 years of service.

She was later married to James Wells in Butler, Missouri and became a member of the family. Alvina was a beloved wife, step-mother and “MaMaw”. She was a faithful church goer, and a member of the Butler Church of the Nazarene, where she was very active. Alvina was never one to “sit still”. She loved her community and wanted to help whenever she could. Alvina also had a passion for travel. She did a lot of missionary work over years, touching the lives of those locally and beyond. She was a person full of knowledge and experience. She was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be forever missed.

Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Raymond Harrison, Vanetta Robey, Richard Harrison, Beulah Myers, and Earl Harrison, along with a step-daughter Jolene Burch. She is survived by her step-children, Jeff Wells, Jon Wells, Jennifer Hardinger, and Gay Keene. Along with many step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Ellett Memorial Hospital November Employee of the Month

We would like to nongraduate Rebecca Conn-Smith, MLS.ASCPcm, Laboratory Manager/ POCC, Infection Preventionist, on being chosen Ellett Memorial Hospital November Employee of the Month.  

She was nominated by her staff as being the best supervisor they had worked with in their laboratory tech career. Rebecca is there to help when needed with a wonderful attitude and a smile.

She is easy to talk to and will answer all your questions. She has an extensive knowledge of the lab and how it works and is eager to share it. Rebecca has been working at EMH in the lab since July of 2016 and was promoted to Department Manager in November of 2022.

She also has an addition role of being in of charge of Infection Control that entails numerous things to keep track of. The lab techs respect Rebecca with the way she takes pride in her job and truly cares about EMH. They call her the backbone of the department, which makes for an outstanding group in the lab that strive to do their best by example.

We are blessed to have Rebecca Conn-Smith as a part of the EMH family. Once again, Congrats Rebecca! And Happy Birthday, too.

Obituary - Merla Ann Moseley

Merla Ann Moseley, 57, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO. Merla was born January 23, 1967 in Stewartsville, MO to Eldon and Helen E. (Watkins) Shisler.

Merla was raised in Stewartsville and graduated from Stewartsville High School. She lived and worked in Louisville, KY for several years then came to Nevada in 2004. During her life, Merla worked at Target as well as several other jobs in retail sales. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church and accepted Christ as her savior in 2023. She enjoyed classic country music, especially listening to Kenny Chesney who was a favorite of hers. Merla also enjoyed watching the Waltons and various game shows on TV. She was fondly given the nickname “Mary Poppins” by her friends.

Survivors include her husband for the past 18 years, John Richard Smith of the home; a brother, Joel Shisler, Magnolia, AR; her sister, Sara Shisler, St. Joseph, MO; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Joshua Pyle officiating. Inurnment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada.
