Understanding Alpha-Gal syndrome

Alpha-Gal Syndrome is a growing concern in Missouri, where cases continue to surface. This serious food allergy is triggered by the bite of the lone star tick and can cause reactions ranging from hives and digestive issues to severe anaphylaxis several hours after eating mammalian meat products.
There is currently no cure, which makes prevention essential.
The best protection is to prevent tick bites by wearing protective clothing, using EPA-approved repellents, checking for ticks after being outdoors and removing ticks properly.
If you or someone you love develops Alpha‑Gal Syndrome, understanding how to manage the condition becomes critical. Five new research‑based guides are now available to help Missourians identify symptoms, navigate food choices, avoid cross‑contact and reduce risk during daily activities.
These guides are available in print and as free downloadable PDFs to support individuals and families across the state.
