Fire Prevention Week starts tomorrow

Butler Fire Department Encourages Residents to Keep their Homes Safe
During Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2011

October 8, 2011 -- What’s the best way to protect your family from fire? Be ahead of the game, of course. With more than 360,000 home fires reported in the United States in 2009, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), your best defense is a good offense. That’s why Butler’s Fire Department is teaming up with NFPA during the October 9-15, 2011, to let our community know: “It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Family from Fire!” This year’s campaign focuses on preventing the leading causes of home fires -- cooking, heating and electrical equipment, as well as candles and smoking materials. Additionally, it urges people to protect their homes and families with life-saving technology and planning.

“In 2009, 2,565 people died in home fires. Nearly all of these deaths could have been prevented by taking a few simple precautions like having working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan, keeping things that can burn away from the stove and always turning off space heaters before going to bed,” says Jim Henry, Chief of the Butler Fire Department. “Fire is a dangerous opponent, but by anticipating the hazards, you are much less likely to be one of the nearly 13,000 people injured in home fires each year.”

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

There has been considerable discussion regarding the purpose and progress of the current special session. Though not complete, there have been definite improvements made for not only the citizens of the 31stDistrict, but for the entire state of Missouri.

During regular session, the passage and subsequent signing of SB 54, or the “Amy Hestir Student Protection Act,” began a debate about the use of social media for exclusive communication between teachers and students. One of the purposes for the special session call was to examine and re-evaluate the language of that bill. In SB 1, offered during special session, the General Assembly required a written policy be developed by the local school board regarding student-school employee communication by March 1, 2012, and that the written policy is to include the topic of electronic and social media, as well as other forms of communication that could be used to foster improper communication.

Judge Hopkins Speaks at Brown Bag Lunch

A small but enthusiastic crowd attended the October 6th noon luncheon sponsored by the 27th Judicial Circuit Court Recovery Court. The Adrian Optimist Club graciously donated the meeting space for the event catered by the Deli at Yoss Thriftway.

Judge Debra Hopkins gave a short but sweet explanation to the crowd about the who, what and why Adult Recovery Court is making a difference to all citizens in Bates County by returning former non violent drug offenders to society. Adult Recovery Court statistics show that 87% of the graduates of the program stay clean, sober and are productive citizens. Long story short, the intense supervision provided by the program works and saves tax payer dollars. Recovery Court candidates must sign a contract that stipulates that they must attend Court weekly, be subject to random searches, be drug tested 3 times weekly, attend school, be employed or do 20 community service per week. Candidates also must attend treatment meetings 3 times weekly. Trackers assure all candidates are home and in bed by curfew every night. There are 4 phases to the program and it takes a bare bones minimum of 18 months to complete the Adult Recovery curriculum.

Another brown bag lunch is scheduled later this month.

Your help needed in ongoing effort to mark Veteran graves

Salute to Civil War Veterans

For decades American Legion Post 153 and Auxiliary have decorated the graves of Veterans at Olathe Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day. Each year the Post would receive calls from family and friends of graves that were missed. Many different groups have participated in research to identify all of the veterans’ graves. This has resulted in identifying the graves of close to 800 veterans of conflicts for the War of 1812 to the present.

This being the 150 anniversary of the Civil War we have concentrated in identifying the graves of Civil War Veterans that are not marked. We have been able to get VA stones for 10 previously unmarked graves and are working on identifying more. One of new stones is for William C. McElwain who was from Bates County but served in the 10th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. A dedication ceremony is planned for October 15th, 2011 at 5:00 pm at the Civil War Veterans Circle, Olathe Memorial Cemetery, 718 Chestnut St., Olathe Kansas. The main speaker will be Tom Rafiner, author of Caught Between Three Fires, a book about Cass County and General Order 11.

One of the problems identifying veterans is the fluid population of the border counties through the years. Especially during the Civil War, as the tide of war changed, the population changed. As we continue our efforts to identify all veterans’ graves in the cemetery we are asking anyone knowing of a veteran interred in Olathe Memorial Cemetery whose grave is not marked to notify us at olathevetsmemorial@prodigy.net with any information you may have.

Butler City Council meeting news

In Butler City Council news, Public Works Director Trent Diehl said the electric service for Walmart's new construction got finished...only to be damaged by a dirt contractor, who dug into it. Billing for repairs to the conduit, wire, pole brackets and the transformer is being sent to the contractor.

Meanwhile, other work is proceeding nicely, and the traffic signals have been installed at Highway 52 and Fran Avenue. No word yet on when the signals will be put into use.

Virginia area resident seriously injured last night

Just after 8 p.m. last night Duard A. Myers, 75, received serious injuries in a single car accident on route V near county road 2002 South of Virginia.  The Southbound 2004 van he was driving apparently left the roadway and struck an embankment, trapping Myers in the vehicle.

He was transported by air ambulance to Research Hospital in Kansas City for treatment. Butler Fire/Rescue was assisted at the scene by the Bates County Sheriff's Department and Bates County EMS.

Accident South of Virginia

Butler Fire/Rescue and Bates County EMS are on the scene of a single car accident with injuries approximately 1.5 miles South of Virginia on V highway.

It is being reported that a LifeFlight helicopter has been summoned to the scene. Use caution if traveling through the area.

Wow, it's dry...no burning!

From the desk of Fire Chief Jim Henry:

Reminder that fire danger will be elevated through at least Wednesday. Temperatures will be high and the relative humidity will fall below 30% during the day. No burning permits are being issued in the City of Butler. If you live in an area where you can burn, it is discouraged to do so. Also, we will conduct the monthly test of the outdoor warning sirens this Wed., Oct. 5 at 10:00 A.M.

Bates County Live also spoke with Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney, who wholeheartedly agrees that burning should be avoided completely until after we get some rainfall. As winds pick up during the day, even a small spark will easily ignite the already dry grass and foliage causing a fire that can quickly damage or destroy structures as well.

Don't forget Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 9-15...

Our forecast calls for a 30% change of rain through the weekend. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Fight is on to preserve 6 day mail delivery

Please sign the petition now to help Preserve Six-Day Mail Delivery.
You can view and sign the petition here: http://wh.gov/4fK

Here is the text of the petition:

Preserve 6 Day Mail Delivery

Cutting 17% of your business to save roughly 5% on operating expenses
doesn't add up. But that is exactly what the USPS is proposing--drastic
changes to their business model, the most radical of which is eliminating
Saturday mail delivery. This is not a sensible solution to preserve the
economic health of the USPS.

The USPS' unique model offers affordable universal service to every
address, six days a week, as mandated by the Constitution. This uniform
rate structure ensures efficient mail delivery to even the most rural
locations--where competitors either won't deliver or charge high premiums
for Saturday delivery.

Maintaining six-day delivery of mail is vital to preserving the economic
health of the Postal Service.
