Businesses Open with Special Christmas in the Country Specials. (Businesses denoted with a * are locations available to pick up a complete schedule, and are participating in a Holiday Basket Drawing.) Holiday Baskets will be out to view and all completed forms must be turned in at the Depot by 3:00 p.m. to be eligible. You must visit at least three (3) participating locations and obtain a signature to be eligible for the basket drawings!

4:50 p.m.: Lighting of the “Mayor’s Christmas Tree in Forest Park
5 – 7:30 p.m.: 1st Christian Church Soup, Chili, Ham & Bean, Hot Dogs & Dessert Supper/Holiday Music Come & Go (beginning at 5:45 p.m.)
First Baptist Church will host a living nativity, sharing the birth of Christ with the community. Viewing times will be 3:00 - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7 during Christmas in the Country festivities and 2:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 18 during the TeamKIDS time. Children that are involved with FBC's TeamKIDS program will portray the living nativity.
The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, December 8 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up. A free will donation will be greatly appreciated.
The 73rd tradition of the Christmas Vesper Service with be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 8, (Doors open 4:00 p.m.). The service will be presented by the Community Choir and Band under the direction of Karla Kelly and Jeannette Hill. You are invited to join them as they proclaim the Christmas Season with a candlelight service of worship and praise. This year, the Service will be held at the Lakeview Barn venue by the Appleton City Lake. (www.vintageview-bysue.com)

Lauren Weber, a correspondent from KHN (Kaiser Health News), the trusted source of health policy information which produces health policy analysis, polling, and journalism will be at Ellett Memorial Hospital to interview staff and the community about the Hospital. Her initial question was that she saw online that Ellett’s bed utilization has decreased and wanted to know how the Hospital was managing related to this data. If anyone would like to come and speak with her or listen to the discussion, she will be at Ellett Thursday December 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Darrell Pohlman will host his annual Christmas display (weather permitting) from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays in December beginning Friday, December 6. The display can be seen at 513 W. 7th St. in Appleton City.
The annual AC Public Library Raffle is in its final days. Many fine prizes can be had for a mere dollar, including 3 $50 prizes from local banks, a piggy bank with gold coins from St. Clair County State Bank, Mary Kay products, an "Eatin' Mexican" basket that includes 2 free dinners from El Charro in Butler, odor eliminating products from H & E Veterinarians, lawn decorations from Powell's TruValue, gift certificates from Food Fair, WalMart gift certificate, Brown's Chiropractic gift, two different chocolate-themed baskets, a sled wall hanging and a coach lantern with two large candles, a filled mixing bowl with brownies and Christmas kitchen items, a large glass container with baking utensils and mix, a wine-themed basket and finally, a basket called "This n That In a Hat"! HURRY in! There's still time to get your tickets before the drawing on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Finish off the Appleton City Community Christmas in the Country at 5:00 p.m. when the First Christian Church will be serving an evening meal of vegetable soup, chili, ham & beans, dessert and drink. A free will donation will be accepted for Community Betterment projects. Holiday music by local musicians in the sanctuary will begin at 5:45. The audience may come and go anytime during the musical performances, using the front door. It is a casual, flexible evening. Appleton City will once host a Christmas parade Saturday, December 7. All interested groups, individuals, families, etc. are encouraged to participate with a float showcasing the theme of "Everyone is Santa.". The doors to the MKT Depot will open at 9:00 a.m. for the 23rd Christmas in the County Depot and Durley Hotel craft show, sponsored by Appleton City Landmarks. The returning crafters will be Julie and Tammy with homemade candies, Mrs. Miller with pies, candies, jellies and breads, Kenna’s American Girl doll creations, Tom Holt will have his wood creations, plus other crafters bringing handmade items including tatting, crocheted and knitted items, scroll saw art and other wood products. There are several new crafters this year, selling handmade jewelry, decal decorated tumblers, canvases, wooden décor, blankets, handmade household items and other surprises. Be sure to stop by the depot and get your drawing sheet signed.
The 2020 Sesquicentennial History book has been sent to the publisher. This will be a large and interesting book of over 500 pages with 158 family stories/histories, 122 pages of local area history, plus business, organization and church history of AC and the surrounding area. The book includes many pictures dating between 1870 and 2019. It will make a nice gift. A copy can be reserved at the Museum table during the craft show.
Have you seen the SQC logo yet? It was created by Lyndsi Davis Rivera ACHS 2009 and the buildings that appeared on the 1970 logo were recreated by Martha Jane Taylor Williams ACHS 1955. See it in the Old Yoss Windows with the Sesquicentennial items that would make a once in a lifetime Christmas Gift. See the logo on the 2020 Calendar with pictures of everything in town, t shirts, the QQC 1995 Pictorial Book (first published in April) and you will be able to preorder the SQC 2020 History Book that may arrive about Christmas.
Appleton City Sesquicentennial Historic Fashion Show will be in June 2020. The fashion show committee is looking for authentic historic clothing and accessories from all decades and categories covering the past 150 years. The owners of the former Yoss Grocery (on Main Street) plan on renovating and converting the building. They would like to know what the people in Appleton City would like them to do with it. AC Rural Health Clinic now has flu shots. FLUAD is an inactivated influenza vaccine recommended for 65 and older and is indicated for active immunization against influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B (H1N1) (H3N2) contained in the vaccine. Flucelvax Quadrivalent is for patients ages 4-64, and is an inactivated influenza vaccine indicated for active immunization against influenza disease caused by influenza virus sub types A & B. Contraindication is for persons allergic to egg proteins. These are the recommendations for the 2019- 20 season. Flu shots can be given without an appointment or provider visit from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call the clinic at 660-475-2121 with any questions. The cost for FLUAD is $105 and Flucelvax $43.50. Please bring your Medicare or insurance card with you and they will file for insurance benefits.
