Get hooked on fishing with MDC Free Fishing Days June 6th and 7th

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to get hooked on fishing through its Free Fishing Days June 6 and 7.

During Free Fishing Days, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. Free Fishing Days is an annual MDC event that takes place statewide during the Saturday and Sunday following the first Monday in June.

Aside from not needing permits, other fishing regulations remain in effect during Free Fishing Days, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas. Trespass laws remain in effect on private property.

MDC reminds anglers in Missouri that fishing permits are required before and after June 6 and 7, unless an angler is exempt by age or other factors. All other fishing regulations are also in effect. MDC temporarily suspended requirements for fishing permits from March 27 through April 15.

MDC reminds the public that it is still critical to continue to heed all recommendations for physical distancing, avoiding overcrowding, handwashing, and other public health measures during outdoor activities.

Vote Doncella Liggins for Ward 2 Butler City Council

Anissa Harris for Butler R-V School Board

June 2nd is quickly approaching and there are some choices to be made on the ballot. I am up for election as a candidate for Butler R-V School Board. Let's get out and vote on June 2nd. I would appreciate your vote.

My name is Anissa Harris and I am currently running for the Butler R-V School Board. I am not very good at advertising or campaigning so I thought I would just cut straight to the chase and tell you who I am and who I am not.

I was born and raised in Butler, Missouri. Graduated in 1996 from Butler High School and have a lot of great memories from my time spent in school and some maybe I should try and hit the delete button on. After living a few places throughout Missouri, I decided that Butler was indeed where I wanted to come back and live my adult life.

I am married to Brian Harris who is from Bates County and works in Management at the Distribution Center for Walmart in Harrisonville. I have two daughters that are students in the Butler R-V school district and also two bonus kids that have already graduated from their high schools and started their own adult lives. I graduated from then Central Missouri State University, now UCM, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology.

I work for the State of Missouri as a Juvenile Officer for the 27th Circuit (Bates, Henry and St. Clair counties) and my office is in Butler. I have been in this position since 2009, however I have been with the Juvenile Office since 2003. Prior to that, I was a school social worker for a neighboring district. From the time I graduated college, I started my journey of being in “the kid business”.

The business of looking out for the best interest of the child. Making decisions, formulating plans, working as a team, and doing all I can from my side to see that each child and/or family I come in contact with has every chance to succeed.

I have been on the Butler R-V School board for one term. I have learned quite a bit about how policies work, how the budget comes together, how concerns are brought to the attention of not only administration but the board itself, and how we all come together to find solutions that benefit the district and kids as a whole. I am not done. I feel that I have more to learn, more to give back to my school that gave to me, more to give to the kids, the community and the staff of the district.

Now as for what I am not. I am not afraid of a challenge. I am not afraid of conflict nor am I afraid to stand up for what I believe is right or wrong. If you have ever had a conversation with me, you know that I do not mince words much and you will know where you stand with me. I am a definite supporter that people can agree to disagree while still holding firm to their own beliefs. We can debate and come to a resolution and still go to lunch later. We all should have a common goal - kids, education, staff and the district as a whole. I believe in transparency. I will always answer questions through my job to the best of my ability and if I do not know the answer, I will find it or find someone who does and pass the knowledge on.

I apply that to every aspect of my life. I am always eager to learn. Learn about laws, policies, statutes, guidelines, etc. The more I know, the more I grow.

I am asking for your vote on June 2nd to elect me, Anissa Harris, to be on the Butler R-V School Board. It is my pleasure to be on this board.

Thank you -
Anissa Harris

Electric pole replacement in Harrisonville

WORKING FOR YOU: Crews with Harrisonville Electric Department are currently replacing a power pole on N Bradley Avenue.

One lane of Bradley will be closed while they are working in the area, so please use caution if driving in the area.

This new pole alone will play a role in reducing power outages in the area, but crews want to take it a step further, so they will be adding a new transformer to this pole. The new transformer will drastically reduce the stress currently on the transformer down the street and will keep a single downed transformer from leaving an entire neighborhood without power.

We greatly appreciate the work our Electrical Dept does every day to keep our community going strong!

Cass County Jail Expansion Project Completed

Cass County Jail Expansion Project Completed

Cass Co – On Thursday Cass County Sheriff Jeff Weber hosted county officials and a small number of local reporters to tour parts of the jail’s recent construction project.

The Cass County Justice Center Complex was completed in 2003. The construction plans at the time called for areas in the complex to accommodate a projected 20 years of additional growth. The 2003 phase of the jail was constructed with 136 beds.

“With the growth of Cass County in the last 17 years, there has been additional need for resources in public safety. These needs were addressed by the voters in 2016 with an extension to the Justice Center tax, allowing us to complete jail space to meet our increasing inmate population. Although we have never turned the “No Vacancy” light on, this addition allows us greater flexibility to provide safe adequate housing of our inmates”, said Sheriff Jeff Weber.

“I would like to thank Sheriff Weber and his staff for working so hard to be accountable for the money that citizens of Cass County voted to improve and expand the jail facilities. The new jail renovations came in on budget and time during very uncertain times in our country!” Presiding Commissioner Bob Huston.

In 2016, the voters passed an extension to the Justice Center Tax to allow for buildout of unfinished space in the complex.

Phase 1 of that tax allowed a buildout of the Courts, adding 2 courtrooms to the 3rd floor of the justice center and additional space. The 4th floor remains unfinished and available for future expansion needs.

Phase 2 started in fall of 2019 and consisted of a buildout in the jail that is completing now. This phase includes more staging area in the booking/intake area, for processing inmates. Completion of a female maximum-security cellblock to house 16 female inmates and 4 additional beds in female minimum security.

Completion of a new male maximum-security cellblock included 16 new beds, an addition of 16 beds to existing male maximum security. The project added a new minimum male dorm cellblock for 10 inmates and 3 new medical cells.

The project adds a total of 62 new beds, bringing the jail capacity from 136 to 198 beds in housing units and 7 medical cells. The jail still has an additional 2 pods unfinished for 48 more beds for future expansion.

COVID Update: Governor extends first phase of reopening

During today’s COVID-19 briefing, Governor Mike Parson announced that Phase 1 of the state’s “Show Me Strong Recovery” Plan has been extended from Sunday, May 31, 2020, through Monday, June 15, 2020.

“We are very pleased with how well Phase 1 has gone so far,” Governor Parson said. “Businesses, communities, and Missourians across the state have done a great job of implementing health and safety measures, and we continue to be encouraged by data across the state.”

Resting on four essential pillars, the “Show Me Strong Recovery” Plan is intended to protect those most at risk of exposure to COVID-19 while helping Missouri recover economically:
Expand testing capacity and volume in the state
Expand reserves of PPE by opening public and private supply chains
Continue to monitor and, if necessary, expand hospital and health care system capacity
Improve ability to predict potential outbreaks using Missouri's public health data

Extending Phase 1 of the plan through June 15 aligns with Governor Parson’s other Executive Orders as well as the state of emergency in Missouri.

Additionally, some communities are farther along than others in the recovery process. Extending Phase 1 will give communities more time to prepare and align efforts as the state continues working toward Phase 2.

“I want to assure you that our efforts are showing positive results, and we are still in a good place with all four of our recovery pillars,” Governor Parsonsaid. “We are extending Phase 1 not because Missouri has taken steps back, but because we want to continue the progress we’ve made and make sure we are fully prepared for Phase 2.”

During Phase 1, citizens may re-engage in economic and social activities but must adhere to social distancing requirements, including maintaining six feet of space between individuals in most cases.

There are currently no limitations on social gatherings as long as necessary precautions are taken and six feet of distance can be maintained between individuals and/or families. Additionally, all businesses can be open provided that the social distancing guidelines set forth in the health order are followed.

Local officials will still have the authority to put further rules, regulations, or ordinances in place so long as they are not inconsistent with the statewide order.

To view the full public health order, click here. For additional guidelines and frequently asked questions, click here. More information on the “Show Me Strong Recovery” Plan can be found at showmestrong.mo.gov.

Aligning with economic recovery, Governor Parson also announced during today’s briefing that Tooling Tech Group (TTG), the second largest tooling provider in the United States, is investing $4.5 million to expand its Washington, Missouri, operations by 21,000 square feet.

TTG currently operates out of 114,000 square feet at two locations in Washington – Town & Country Industrial Park and 431 W-W Industrial Park where the expansion is underway.

The Washington division specializes in engineer-to-order die cast tooling for the automotive and outdoor products industries, including extensive die repair and laser welding capability. The company plans to increase its team by 25 over the next five years with engineers, programmers, precision machinists, and die mechanics.

“Throughout these challenging times, Missouri has remained strong and resilient,” Governor Parson said. “Seeing companies like Tooling Tech Group expand in our state gives us hope and confidence as we move forward on the path to economic recovery.”

From a testing standpoint, Missouri continues to make progress with its COVID-19 testing plan. From May 20 through May 27, the state exceeded both its sentinel and community sampling testing goals.

For sentinel testing, 6,466 tests were planned from May 20 through May 27, and 8,127 tests were conducted. For community sampling, 2,250 tests were planned, and 2,971 were conducted. The state came very close to its goal for box-in testing, completing approximately 4,539 tests out of a planned 4,670.

In addition to efforts at the state level, CVS Health today announced it will open 22 new COVID-19 testing sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations across Missouri as part of its nationwide COVID-19 response. Self-swab tests will be available to individuals meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria as well as state and age guidelines.

Patients will remain in their vehicles and be directed to the pharmacy drive-thru window. At the window, they will be provided with a test kit and instructions. A CVS Pharmacy team member will observe the self-swab process to ensure it is done properly. Tests will then be sent to an independent, third-party lab for processing, and the results will be available in approximately three days.

“These testing sites will be a huge help as we continue to increase testing in Missouri, and we are grateful for CVS’s commitment to slowing the spread and keeping our citizens healthy and safe,” Governor Parson said.
