Important Information From the Nevada School District

The Nevada R-5 School District has sent a letter to parents and guardians that they received notification Monday of a Nevada High School student who tested positive for COVID-19.

School officials say the Vernon County Health Department is notifying all individuals who meet the definition of close contact and are instructing those individuals of their required next steps.

Nevada R-5 Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Tyson Beshore, says Nevada High School will be open for class on Tuesday.

Bates County now at 85 cases

August 31, 2020

Bates County Health Center has confirmed more positive cases of COVID-19 in Bates County. All  cases reside either Butler or Adrian.  Contact tracing is being done at this time and any parties that have had close contact, as reported to us by the positive cases, are being notified.   Please keep in mind that our contact tracing is ONLY as good as the information we get from the positive individuals--sometimes it is difficult to remember everyone you might have had close contact with when we are doing the interview. If you feel you have been a close contact and have not been contacted by the Health Department either reach out to the individual you think you were exposed to or to our office and we will contact the positive case for confirmation.

Any individuals advised of need for isolation and quarantine are per CDC guidelines.  Also, there are questions about having to remain in quarantine for 14 days even if you get a negative result.  The following is information from the CDC guidance:
When to start and end quarantine
You should stay home for 14 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.

… even if you test negative for COVID-19 or feel healthy, you should stay home (quarantine) since symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.
The reason an individual can’t “test out of quarantine” is because it may take up to 14 days for symptoms to appear and you can infect others up to 48 hours prior to showing symptoms.  This was the case of one such individual that quarantined as directed and on day 14 began to show symptoms and tested positive.

At this time, Bates County has had 85 positives cases, 12 of which are currently active and isolated.

We would also like to remind individuals that if you have been tested, you should quarantine at home until test results are received—this decreases any possible exposure for others in the event your results come back positive.
With our numbers for Bates County rising, we hope everyone will continue to practice social distancing, clean/disinfect any high touched surfaces, wash their hands with soap and water routinely, use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available, avoid touching your face (especially eyes, nose & mouth), and to stay home if you are sick.  Wearing a mask in public is also encouraged.  It is up to each and every one of us to stop the spread of this disease!

From the Adrian School District

We are a work in progress during arrival and dismissal times! Please be patient with us (and each other) as we do our best to get students in and out of the building safely.

We get faster as we get to know all of our parents and students!

Thanks for your patience and understanding as we navigate the process! First Monday of the 2020-2021 school year was a SUCCESS!

In the drop off and pickup lines make sure your driver behavior matches our expectations for students in lines in the building - no cutting, no touching and no name calling!

Important notice from Butler High School

The Butler R-V School District is aware of a student at the High School Campus who tested positive for COVID-19.  We are working diligently with the Bates County Health Department to follow the protocols in place as we deal with this issue.  Other students who have had prolonged exposure or direct contact will be contacted by the Health Department and advised to quarantine.

Please remember the district is unable to release many details due to confidentiality procedures.  While we are hopeful the number of incidents will be minimal, it is best to remember that announcements such as this will likely occur throughout this school year.  We encourage all to continue to social distance where possible, frequently sanitize your hands and monitor health symptoms to help limit the spread of COVID.

In 1946, at 18 years old, he joined the Navy. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and honorably discharged in 1948.

After serving in the Navy, Albert married Minnie Alice (Litle) on April 1, 1950 and worked in the local shoe factory and then retired from Witt’s Printing Company. After retiring he worked as a repairman on small engines, lawn mowers and chainsaws.

WHAT’S UP By LeRoy Cook

Despite the occasional bouts of inclement flying weather, or perhaps because of it, the Butler airport saw considerable traffic this past week. You see, when the weather turns bad, we sometimes get unplanned visitors dropping in, seeking refuge. The mix of visiting aircraft types was certainly eclectic.

A Eurocopter EC130 medical helicopter sat down on the ramp Saturday night, an AirTractor 602 sprayplane was parked between aerial application jobs, a nicely-restored 1978 Cessna Cardinal RG came in, and a 1960 Piper Comanche shot a few landings. On Sunday, a Cessna Pressurized Centurion took on fuel, accompanied by a 1964 Cessna 210H and a Piper Cherokee 140.

Locally-based pilots taking to the sky included Jim Ferguson in his Cessna Skylane, Roy Conley in his experimental autogyro, Brandt Hall flying his experimental Slipstream and KIS Cruiser, and Curtis Grimes with his 1947 Cessna 140. The SkyDive KC King Air was grounded by bad weather over the entire wasted weekend, and the Fliars Club breakfast flight was thwarted by thunderstorms as well.

On the training scene, a new student pilot became active on Friday, when Jeffery Adams of Adrian made his first solo flight, circling the field three times in a Cessna 150 completely unaided. Jeffery has worked diligently on his training, progressing rapidly to the solo stage. He now continues polishing his skills, toward the private pilot certificate.

The tower controllers are talking faster than ever in these short-staffed Covid days, mostly because they are being forced to cover more than one working position. Doing local tower, ground control and clearance issuance is really a multi-tasking nightmare. So, you can now expect the chatterbox in the glass cage to make requests even as you bore down final, intent on the task of landing. They used to let you roll off the runway and contact ground control to see where you wanted to park. Then the tower started asking you “where you parking” during the rollout. Now they query you on the downwind or base leg. Soon they’ll want to know before you take off.

If you want to participate in our brain-teaser quiz of the week, be the first to tell us who goes first when two pilots have to eject from a crippled military jet. You can send the answer to kochhaus1@gmail.com.

Online handgun class offered

St. LOUIS, Mo.—When pistols and handguns come to mind, many people think of self-defense and home protection. But did you know that handguns are also a valid hunting method for several species, such as rabbits, squirrels, bullfrogs, deer and coyotes?

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding an Introduction to Handguns class online Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 6-7:30 p.m. The course is free and open to all ages.

Handguns offer a viable alternative to hunters who prefer to travel light or might have physical limitations or other restrictions regarding handling or carrying rifles. They can also be used for recreational target shooting.

This program will introduce shooters to handguns who may have just purchased one or who might be looking into purchasing one. The class will also help those who might feel uncomfortable or unsure about handguns feel more at ease with using them.

This virtual online program will cover what to do to get started shooting handguns. It will be presented by the staff at MDC’s August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Defiance. It will go over handgun fundamentals, including handgun actions, operation, safety measures, maintenance, and safe storage. An interactive Q&A opportunity with MDC staff will be offered after the course.

Introduction to Handguns is a free virtual program open to all ages, but advanced online registration is required at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZBW. Attendees will receive an invitation by email from the MDC Event Management System with a WebEx program link the day before the program.

MDC offers many free educational programs in the St. Louis region to help people discover nature, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. Stay informed by going to the MDC St. Louis reginal events page at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZP6.

Josh was our brother, son, uncle, and friend. He was also our teacher, our protector, and our chauffeur.

Bates County Health Center confirms new positive cases of COVID-19

August 28, 2020

Bates County Health Center has confirmed more positive cases of COVID-19 in Bates County. The cases reside in Amoret, Rich Hill, Butler & Drexel.

Even if you test negative for COVID-19 or feel healthy, you should stay home (quarantine) since symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/quarantine.html

The reason an individual can’t “test out of quarantine” is because it may take up to 14 days for symptoms to appear and you can infect others up to 48 hours prior to showing symptoms. This was the case of one such individual that quarantined as directed and on day 14 began to show symptoms and tested positive.

At this time, Bates County has had 75 positives cases, 15 of which are currently active and isolated.
