Bates County Career Women's 2011 Forum set for Sept. 10

This year's theme is 'Fresh for Life' and features Kristen Feola and Jamie Milks. The location will be the Assembly of God Church at 801 S. Main in Butler.

Kristen Feola is the author of The Ultimate Guide to the Daniel Fast, an inspiring resource for Christians who want to pursue a more intimate relationship with God through a 21-day commitment to prayer and fasting. Kristen has worked as a personal trainer, nutritional consultant, First Race 4 Health leader and fitness instructor. She is also an active member of Moms in Touch International. She and her husband Justin live in Springfield with their two daughters. Her blog address is www.ultimatedanielfast.com.

Jamie Milks is the chef and owner at Everyday Organic Cookery in Kansas City Mo., whose mission is to provide convenient and delicious food options that are healthy for us and healthy for the environment. Mother of two boys, she leads an active life dedicated to the local food movement, which includes: teaching cooking classes, serving on the Board of Directors of Slow Food Kansas City, and writing a blog called The Urban Homestead Experiment, a resource for gourmet, heirloom cooking (www.urbanhomesteadx.com). Jamie is also a church council member at Living Water Christian Church in Parkville, Mo. where she and her family reside.

Butler R-V August school board meeting summary

Public Comment: 
The board extends thanks to Ken West for his contribution of lumber to the school.

New Business:
b. The board approved a bid submitted from H.P. Electric in the amount of $8350.
c. The board approved to seek out the refinancing of the callable bonds for a potential savings of 814,0000 to the tax payers. The board will take action sooner to lock in rates if interest rises.
d. The board heard a report from assistant superintendent Heath Oates about district Map Scores. The overall trend is that Butler continues to have scores that closely mirror state scores.
e. The MSBA Leadership Award was tabled until the September meeting.
f. The Bear Backers reported on the Pancake Breakfast Saturday, August 13, along with the parking spot auction, introductions of the softball and volleyball teams and the football scrimmage.
g. Brad Stephens reported that the Educational Foundation had received a corporate donation of $1,000 dollars from Principal Financial.
h. The board accepted the resignation of school board member Paul Miller for personnel health reasons. The board appointed the next leading vote recipient in the April election, which was Brad Davis.
i. The board approved a sub-committee of 3 members to make recommendations to the board about completion of the athletic complex.

Closed Session:
The board accepted the resignation of Jim Wheatley as a para-professional.
The board hired Laury Johnson as Jr. High Volleyball coach.

Attention State Fair goers....

Lynyrd Skynyrd is unable to perform for their scheduled concert on Friday, August 12 at the Missouri State Fair due to health reasons; however, the Doobie Brothers will still be performing starting at 7:30 p.m.; there will not be a band replacing Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Missouri State Fair hopes that concert ticketholders will still choose to attend the concert.

Bates County Museum to Host All Creative Crafters, Spinners, Weavers, Quilters, Knitters, and others!


On August 18th, the Third Thursday, you are invited to the Bates County Museum for a fun day of working on your projects.  The July gathering was such a success that we decided to do it again!  
Bring your sewing, knitting, crocheting, or anything you want to carry in, and join the fun.  Our goal is to share, visit and maybe help if you are having trouble with something.  So, come join the fun.  All are welcome.  Don’t have anything to work on?  Mary Limpus is hosting the day and will provide a variety of projects so this is the perfect opportunity to experiment with something new. Come early and stay late, or, come late and leave early!  Bring your lunch or enjoy eating out at noon. Obituary - Ruth Taylor


Ruth Taylor of Belton, MO passed away August 9, 3011. Ruth was born Jan. 21, 1938 in Senath, Mo, the fourth child to Ezra and Ethel (Parker) Malone. Growing up on her family’s farm, she graduated from Senath High School in 1955. She had fond memories and recounted numerous stories working with her sibling in the cotton and watermelon fields for her parents. Ruth was a homemaker most of her life and also worked in retail. She enjoyed sewing, collecting angels and glassware, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, helping with AWANAS and other church activities. She gave unconditional love to her friends and family.



She was preceded in death by both of her parents; brother, EJ Malone; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Malone and Mary Margaret (Doll) Baker, and son, Steven Haggard. She married and is survived by her husband of 44 years, Harold Taylor; two sons, Don Haggard and Curt Taylor of Belton, Mo; two daughters, Pam Coleman (Billy) of Columbia, Mo and Dana Liston (Darin) of Olathe, Ks; daughter-in-law, Carol Haggard of Butler, Mo; brother, Donal (Bud) Malone of Cardwell, Mo and sister, Jewell Wayne DaVault, of Hollywood, Mo, and numerous nieces and nephews.



Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm, Friday, Aug 12, at Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church, 215th and Y Hwy, Belton, Mo 64012. Funeral services will be held at 11am, Saturday, Aug 13, at the church. Graveside services will follow at 3 pm in the Memorial Garden Cemetery in Warrensburg, Mo 64093.

Ellett Memorial Hospital to host Fit and Fun Community Block Party

Ellett Memorial Hospital will host a "Fit and Fun Community Block Party" on August 20th. The event is a community day of family fun and healthcare information, to be held a the Appleton City hospital.

The 5k walk will kick off the day at 8 a.m.- registration starts at 7:30. Free water bottles will be given to all that register. There will be a special prize for the 'craziest socks'....so dig through your drawers and find the wildest ones you own.

The Ellett Memorial Hospital will be offering free blood pressure readings and cholesterol checks. Plus vendors will be on location from:
