71st rodeo ‘of the best ever’
2024 BUTLER SADDLE CLUB RODEO QUEEN is 16 year old Bree Baney, daughter of Landon and Tami Baney of Harrsonville, Mo. who took top honors during festivities Sunday night at the Bates county fairgrounds. It was a big weekend overall with a capacity crowd Saturday night.
Preslee Chism of Butler (second from right) was declared Mutton Bustin Champ during the 71st annual Butler Saddle Club Rodeo over the weekend. Other winners include Wild Horse Race, the Osage Outlaws of Pawhuska, OK; Marshall Mayfield a Savage rifle with scope or $500 and the State Fair 4 pack of tickets or $200 went to Jeremy Thomson. The Saddle Club would like to thank everyone for their support and plans are already in the works for the 72nd celebration next year.

Heat Advisory Monday Afternoon
A Heat advisory is in effect for Monday afternoon for most of western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Dangerous heat is expected to develop. High temperatures will near 100° F with max heat index values pushing near 110° F in some locations.
No relief from the heat is expected Monday night into Tuesday as morning lows struggle to get below 80° F, especially in the KC Metro area.
Please be safe on Monday, especially if you work outside. Drink plenty of water, and take breaks in the shade. Check on your elderly neighbors. Ensure pets have shade and plenty of water.

William Dean “Bill” McElwain, age 68 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, June 21, 2024 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Bill was born January 25, 1956 to Ellis Leroy and Virginia Fern Bitner McElwain in Butler, Missouri.
Bill is survived by his wife Sharon McElwain of Butler, Missouri; daughter Jacqueline Ellen “Jacque” Hill and husband Gary; two sons Clayton William McElwain and wife Lindsay and Dalton McElwain all of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, Glen McElwain and wife Linda of Butler, Vern McElwain and wife Barbara of Adrian; a sister Connie Eidson and husband Danny of Urich, Missouri; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; a brother Howard McElwain and sister Carol Jean Christopher.

Structure fire in rural Nevada
On Friday June 21st around 12:55 a.m. the Nevada Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire with flames coming out of the roof at a address of 14611 S.1350 Road.
When the firefighters arrived the homeowner was trying to cool down the roof with a garden hose. The fire crew entered the house and was able to quickly put out the fire.
The fire department was on-scene for around two hours, The cause of the fire after an investigation found over-heated wiring could not be ruled out as a cause. There were no reported injuries.

Slight Risk of Severe storms Tonight in northern Missouri. Marginal risk for the rest of the area. Scattered storms will develop along a frontal boundary as it moves in from the northwest. Initial storms are expected after 4 PM. Activity will peak after 7 PM and continue through 3 to 4 AM. Primary Hazard: Strongest storms will pose a damaging wind risk. A few storms may produce up to golf ball size hail. The tornado risk is low.

1st Annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo in Harrisonville
The Harrisonville Police Department is excited to announce we are hosting our 1st Annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo on Friday, July 26th, 2024.
In an effort to encourage bicycle safety for youth, the FREE rodeo will be held at North Park, 1500 S Jefferson Parkway, and starts at 9 a.m. This event is open to all kids grades K-5.
You MUST register prior to the event by contacting Officer Sumner at psumner@harrisonville.com. Space is limited so please don’t wait! You may also contact Officer Sumner with any further questions about the event.

The event will include multiple stations where kids learn about bicycle safety, have their bicycle and helmets inspected for safety, and actually ride through a course where they will practice what they have learned.
The participants are required to bring a helmet, a bicycle in good working order, and wear closed toe shoes. The parents of participants are encouraged to stay during the event and learn as well.
