Obituary - Marvin Troy Shaw
Marvin Troy Shaw, age 40, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 28, 2019. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Belton High School Performing Arts Center, 801 W. North Ave., Belton, Missouri 64012. A Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life Service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Following the service, a visitation will continue until 4:00 p.m.
Troy was born on September 7, 1978 to Tina D. Meador and Hubert Marvin Shaw in Independence, Missouri. After graduating from Belton High School in 1996 he continued his education at the Metropolitan Community College, Kansas City, Missouri. During Troy’s selfless and honorable career, he achieved a degree of Associate in Arts.
With all Troy did in life, he did it with others in mind. Earning his education and bettering himself was done, so that he could better serve others. Troy was an instrumental part in the upbringing of the Technology Department in the Belton School District. Safety of students was his number one priority. First establishing safety and security within the school’s technology, Troy then established measures of physical safety within the school systems. With no thought of becoming a law enforcement officer, Troy did just that as it meant further safety for his students. After completing the police academy, Troy served his community as a Belton Police Officer part-time outside of his work in the school district. He also was involved with a local mental health coalition called, Belton CARES. In fact, Troy was the executive director, once again, working diligently for the care and safety of others.
Troy was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Donald L. Meador Sr.; paternal grandparents Otto and Opal Shaw; maternal step-grandparents, Dorothy and David Craig; and aunt Beatrice Meador.
He is survived by his father, Hubert Marvin Shaw; mother Tina D. Hickam (Danny); two brothers, Anthony Shaw and Danny Hickam; three sisters, Tricia Mendez (Paul), Jennifer Burnett (Eric) and Michelle Wieseler (Adam); maternal grandmother, Norma L. Meador; two uncles, Donald L. Meador Jr. and Thomas R. Meador; eighteen nieces and nephews; numerous cousins; and many more friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Belton CARES, 110 W. Walnut St. Belton, Missouri 64012
Arrangements: Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, Missouri 816.322.5278

Attention Butler Elementary School Parents
We are implementing the house system this fall into our building. In doing this, we are hoping to promote positive relationships and mentoring for students, to promote positive relationships between students and teachers, focus on character education, and to instill Butler Pride in our students. It’s all about our school culture!
We will have six dens all named for “Bears” in different languages: Oso, Karhu, Tanka, Medve, Kubeba, and Bhaaloo. Teachers and students have been randomly sorted into their dens. Dens will meet on spirit assembly days, and as the year(s) progresses we hope that this will create meaningful mind shifts in culture, more service opportunities, and student mentoring.

Students can earn points throughout the day for their den by exhibiting good character, acts of kindness, and other actions that show what being a Bear is all about. We will keep a running total and award a Den Championship at the end of the year.

Former Linn County Attorney Sentenced for Thefts of Public Property
KANSAS CITY, KAN. – The former Linn County Attorney was sentenced today to a year and a day in prison for stealing $75,000 worth of electronics and equipment that belonged to the county, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said. In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay $75,000 in restitution and a fine totaling $11,000.
John Sutherland, 69, Mound City, who served as county attorney for approximately 20 years before leaving the job in January 2017, pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of lying to federal investigators. The crimes took place from sometime prior to January 2009 until Sutherland left office.
“The defendant abused the public trust,” McAllister said. “He used his elected position as county attorney to steal more than $75,000 from the Linn County taxpayers who had placed their trust in him as the county’s top law enforcement official. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were approximately 9,750 people in Linn County in 2018. The median household income was $46,576. That means the defendant stole property worth far more than most Linn County residents earn in a year.”
According to the government’s sentencing memo, the defendant had the county pay for seven cellular phones that were not used to conduct county business.
In his plea, Sutherland admitted that on Feb. 6, 2019, FBI agents found 13 items stolen from Linn County when they searched Sutherland’s office at the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office.
At the time, Sutherland was working as an Assistant District Attorney. One of the items was a stolen Apple laptop computer.
When FBI agents interviewed him, Sutherland denied any wrongdoing and made other false statements. For instance, he claimed that an Apple TV 64 GB video-streaming device the county purchased for about $220 had been destroyed. FBI agents found the device intact at Sutherland’s residence.
In his plea agreement, Sutherland agreed to surrender his license to practice law.
McAllister commended the FBI, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tris Hunt and Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley for their work on the case. McAllister assisted with the prosecution of the case.
